Chapter 17 - Khloe Walks Into the Boardroom

At 3:52 p.m., twelve directors gathered again.

Eight minutes remained before the vote.

Damian’s chair was empty.

His allies were not.

The lead director cleared his throat.

“We will proceed.”

The doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Khloe Thorne entered.

She wore a simple black maternity dress.

A hospital wristband remained around her left wrist.

Sebastian walked beside her.

Marcus followed several steps behind.

The room fell silent.

One director stood.

“Mrs. Thorne, should you be here?”

Khloe looked at him.

“No.”

Then she took a seat.

“But neither should half the people in this room.”

Nobody spoke.

Sebastian connected a laptop to the screen.

Damian’s messages appeared.

Then the financial records.

Then the vehicle sabotage payments.

Then Isabella’s communications.

Finally Evelyn appeared on video.

Marcus watched his mother describe Damian’s scheme.

The silence became unbearable.

Evelyn explained that Damian had spent years positioning himself to control Thorne Global.

Marcus’s father had discovered irregularities before his death.

Evelyn discovered more afterward.

Damian threatened Marcus if she went public.

So she disappeared.

He fabricated medical documents.

He isolated her.

Then he used her fear to keep her silent.

“I believed staying away protected my son.”

Evelyn said.

“I was wrong.”

“Silence protected Damian.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

Those words hit both of them.

Silence protected Damian.

Marcus’s silence about his affair.

His silence about surveillance.

Elaine’s silence.

Evelyn’s silence.

Everyone had believed secrecy could contain danger.

Instead, secrecy fed it.

The board chair paused the video.

“This vote is suspended.”

One of Damian’s allies stood.

“You cannot—”

The doors opened again.

Detective Ortiz entered with federal investigators.

“We can.”

Three directors were escorted from the room.

One had received payments from Damian.

Another had agreed to approve the biotech sale.

The third had helped route company funds through shell corporations.

Marcus watched everything without satisfaction.

His family company had been rotting from the inside for years.

Khloe stood slowly.

The board chair looked at her.

“Mrs. Thorne.”

“Yes?”

“Given the court’s temporary freeze, we need interim governance.”

Khloe looked around the table.

“I’m not here to run your company.”

Marcus studied her.

She continued.

“But you will not sell Thorne Biotech.”

“And you will not use my unborn daughter as a bargaining chip.”

The room remained silent.

“If the court eventually transfers those shares to my trust, I will demand a complete independent audit.”

“Every director.”

“Every executive.”

“Every account.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Damian had spent years fighting to prevent Khloe from gaining power.

Now he had given her the reason to use every ounce of it.

At 4:18 p.m., the biotech sale was officially canceled.

At 4:26, Marcus received a call.

It was Detective Ortiz.

They had found Elaine.

Alive.

Terrified.

Locked inside a storage property owned by one of Damian’s shell companies.

Khloe closed her eyes in relief.

Then Lena gave Marcus one more piece of news.

“We also found your mother.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

“Where?”

“At the same property.”

“Is she okay?”

“She’s alive.”

Marcus leaned against the wall.

Khloe watched tears fill his eyes.

But Lena was not finished.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“Your mother says Damian is heading to the hospital.”

Khloe’s hand moved to her stomach.

Marcus’s face changed.

“Why?”

Lena answered.

“Because he believes the original security footage is still there.”

Damian was coming back to destroy the last piece of evidence.

And Khloe’s hospital room was directly above it.
