Chapter 12

Lucia faced her own consequence for the banquet.
The security footage showed everything.
Celina knocking Rosa’s tray away.
Celina shoving her.
Lucia catching Rosa.
The documents.
The confrontation.
Then Lucia walking across the room and slapping Celina after the immediate danger to Rosa had passed.
The slap sent Celina into the dessert trolley.
The spectacle made good family gossip.
It did not make clean self-defense.
Lucia gave an unedited copy to investigators.
Her attorney told her:
“You could argue provocation.”
“I was provoked.”
“That does not necessarily excuse the strike.”
“I know.”
The legal result was limited.
Civil damages for part of the destroyed display and Celina’s medical evaluation.
A misdemeanor-level resolution with counseling requirements.
Lucia completed them.
Then continued therapy after the requirement ended.
That shocked Rosa more than anyone.
“You pay somebody to tell you when you’re wrong?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve done that free for forty-six years.”
“I asked the therapist about getting reimbursed.”
Rosa laughed.
The wider Ferraro audit hurt more.
Marco uncovered family members using hospitality accounts for personal travel.
A cousin had approved contracts for a friend without bids.
Dominic had signed several vague vendor authorizations long before Celina’s scheme.
Lucia herself had verbally approved expenses that should have been documented.
None of that equaled Celina’s conduct.
But Lucia refused to use that difference as an excuse.
New rules followed.
No family brooch, surname, marriage, or seniority conveyed signing authority.
Real-estate collateral required independent legal review.
Rosa’s company received its own outside accountant.
Dominic lost all authority over Rosa’s business.
Permanently unless Rosa herself later created a new role.
The old power of attorney was revoked.
Marco asked Rosa whether she wanted another family member appointed.
“No.”
“Lucia?”
Rosa looked horrified.
“Absolutely not.”
Lucia laughed.
Rosa chose a professional business manager for emergencies.

The restaurant had survived decades because Rosa was capable.
Its next stage would not depend on whether one relative happened to be trustworthy.
