Chapter 2 - The Dark Conspiracy and the Shadows Behind the Sterling Alliance

The heavy oak doors of the Moretti ballroom remained bolted shut, trapping two hundred of New York and Chicago’s elite inside a chamber filled with sudden, suffocating tension. The champagne fountains still bubbled, but no one dared touch a glass.
Dante Moretti’s dark eyes were fixed entirely on Isabella, his tall frame shielding her from the stares of the crowd. His mind raced back eight months to the night Isabella had vanished from his penthouse without a trace. He had searched the city, turning over every underworld stone, believing she had simply walked away from his dangerous world.
“Who showed you that proof?” Dante demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made even the hardened capos in the room step back.
Isabella struggled to catch her breath, leaning heavily against Dante’s solid chest. “It was a man in a black coat. He left a dossier on my kitchen table in Milwaukee. It had your signature on a contract authorizing my elimination, claiming I knew too much about your shipping routes.”
Across the room, Vanessa Sterling stepped forward, her diamond necklace flashing under the chandeliers. Her composure was slipping, replaced by a desperate, frantic edge. “Dante, don’t listen to this delusional vagrant! She’s trying to sabotage our merger! Eighty million dollars in port concessions are riding on this engagement tonight. You can’t let some diner waitress ruin everything with a fabricated story!”
Dante didn’t even look at Vanessa. He signaled his security chief, Marcus. “Take two men. Search every vehicle belonging to the Sterling family parked outside. And bring me the security logs from my private office for the night Isabella disappeared.”
Vanessa’s father, industrialist Arthur Sterling, pushed through the crowd, his face purple with fury. “Dante! You are insulting my family under your own roof! If you walk away from this alliance now, the Sterling shipping fleet pulls out of Chicago by midnight!”
“Let them pull out,” Dante snarled without blinking. “My world is burning down around me, and you think I care about freight lines?”

Isabella touched Dante’s lapel. “They set me up, Dante. The signature on that paper... it looked identical to yours, but it was forged. And the night I left, someone pushed me down the stairs of my apartment building. That’s why I lost my freedom of movement. That’s why I couldn't reach you sooner.”
Dante’s eyes flared with pure, murderous rage. He looked down at the pale, exhausted woman carrying his child, realizing just how close he had come to losing them both forever.
