Chapter 3

The library was nearly complete.
Vivien stood in the center of the room.
The shelves smelled of cedar and wax.
She had designed them to hold every book they had ever shared.
It was her favorite room in the house.
It was a room for silence,
but for a different kind of silence.
It was a silence of reflection.
Lorenzo walked in.
He carried a stack of rare editions he had found in the city.
He set them on the center table.
"The light here is perfect," he said.
"I made sure of that," she replied.
He walked around the room.
He touched the trim.
He was learning the architecture of her mind.
"You designed this to be a sanctuary."
"I designed it to be a place where we could be ourselves."
"Is that possible?"
"It is now."
He stood by the window.
He looked toward the beach.
"I had a meeting with the board yesterday."
"And?"
"They are beginning to understand that the Moretti Group is changing."
"Are they resisting?"
"Some of them."
"And what did you do?"
"I let them talk."
"Just talk?"
"Yes."
"No threats?"
"No."
"It feels strange, doesn't it?"
"It feels like the beginning of something else."
He turned to face her.
"I don't miss the intensity of the fear."
"I never did," she said.
He walked toward her.
He stopped inches away.
"Thank you for the light."
"Thank you for coming to the clinic."
The exchange was simple.
It was the hallmark of their new language.
They did not need the grand gestures anymore.
They needed the incremental ones.
The small, daily acts of presence.
The library was filled with the scents of a home.
Not an organization.
Not an image.
A home.
She took one of the books he had brought.
It was an old volume on coastal architecture.
She opened it.
The pages were yellowed,
brittle with time.
She felt a sense of continuity.
They were building a life that had roots.
The city was a place they visited.
The beach house was the place where they existed.
She placed the book on the shelf.
It fit perfectly.
Just like everything else they had fought for.
She looked at Lorenzo.
He was watching her.
He was looking at her.
Truly looking at her.
He was not thinking about the board.
He was not thinking about the Castellanos.
He was just here.
And that was the victory.
The room was quiet.
The sun moved across the floor.
They were in their sanctuary.
May you like
And for the first time,
the sanctuary was enough.
