Chapter 9

Summer was a season of light.
The coast was alive with the sound of the ocean,
the call of the gulls,
and the laughter of children on the beach.
They spent their days outside,
immersed in the rhythm of the tides.
The garden was in full bloom,
a riot of color against the backdrop of the sea.
They had friends over.
They had long, lazy dinners on the porch.
They had the kind of life they had once only dreamed of.
It was a life of substance.
It was a life of grace.
One afternoon,
they went for a walk along the shore.
Clara was running ahead,
chasing a kite that was dancing in the breeze.
"She’s so free," Lorenzo said.
"She’s a child of the beach," Vivien replied.
"I’m glad we chose this."
"So am I."
He stopped and looked at her.
"You saved me, you know."
"We saved each other."
"I suppose that’s true."
He took her hand.
"I still have nightmares sometimes."
"I know."
"But they’re fading."
"They always will."
"I think I’m finally at peace."
"That’s the greatest gift of all."
They watched the kite soaring high above the dunes.
It was a bright, defiant speck against the blue.
It was a symbol of their flight.
They had left the shadows.
They had reached the light.
And they were holding on to it.
The world was big,
but they were small.
They were content to be small.
They were content to be simple.
They were content to be themselves.
The sun was high in the sky,
the warmth a comfort on their skin.
The air was full of the salt of the sea,
and the scent of the earth.
They were in their place.
They were in their time.
They were home.
The day stretched out,
a long, bright ribbon of possibility.
Everything was perfect.
Everything was right.
They were finally there.
They were finally free.
May you like
They were finally together.
And that was the only truth that would ever matter.
