Chapter 2 – The Woman They Never Saw Coming (Part 1)

Chapter 2 – The Woman They Never Saw Coming (Part 1)

Damian stared at the screen of his phone as another notification appeared.

ACCOUNT ACCESS DENIED.

Then another.

BOARD AUTHORIZATION REVOKED.

Another.

TRANSFER OF EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY COMPLETED.

His breathing became uneven.

"This..."

He looked up at Elena.

"...this isn't possible."

Elena calmly accepted another folder from the senior executive.

"It already happened."

The room had become unnaturally quiet.

Only the vibration of Damian's phone continued.

Every few seconds...

Another alert.

Another resignation.

Another account frozen.

Another investor withdrawing.

Years of power...

Disappearing in minutes.

Veronica refused to believe it.

"This is fraud!"

She pointed at Elena.

"You've manipulated everyone!"

The executive calmly adjusted his glasses.

"Mrs. Hart."

"I suggest you choose your next words carefully."

She laughed bitterly.

"You work for her."

"I work for Voss Global Holdings."

He corrected her politely.

"I always have."

Veronica looked around the conference room.

Several executives who had once eagerly greeted Damian now stood respectfully behind Elena.

Not one of them looked surprised.

As if...

They had been waiting for this day.

Damian slammed both hands onto the conference table.

"I built this company!"

"No."

Elena's answer was immediate.

"You managed one division."

She slowly opened another folder.

"This company was built long before you ever walked into one of its offices."

She removed a faded photograph.

A much younger Elena stood beside an elderly man in front of a half-finished warehouse.

Dust covered their clothes.

Neither looked wealthy.

"My grandfather."

She smiled softly.

"The first Voss warehouse."

"Nineteen ninety-eight."

Another photograph.

A tiny office.

Broken furniture.

Four employees.

One computer.

"This was headquarters."

A third.

Factories.

Ships.

Distribution centers.

Thousands of workers.

"I spent twenty-three years building this company."

She looked directly at Damian.

"You spent five years convincing yourself it belonged to you."

The chairman quietly entered the room.

Every executive immediately stood.

"Ms. Voss."

"The international board is waiting."

Elena nodded.

"I'll be there shortly."

The chairman glanced toward Damian.

"I'm afraid your access badge has already been disabled."

Damian instinctively reached for the badge hanging around his neck.

Its small green light had turned red.

His assistant, Michael, hurried back into the room.

His face was pale.

"Sir..."

He stopped himself.

Looked at Elena.

Then back at Damian.

"I..."

He swallowed.

"I'm sorry."

Damian frowned.

"What now?"

Michael lowered his eyes.

"Human Resources instructed me to return your company laptop."

Silence.

"...and escort you from the executive floor."

Veronica gasped.

"You can't be serious."

Michael looked miserable.

"I don't have a choice."

Damian turned toward Elena.

"You've humiliated me."

She looked at him for several seconds before answering.

"No."

"I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own choices."

He laughed bitterly.

"So that's it?"

"You destroy everything?"

"I haven't destroyed anything."

She picked up another report.

"I've removed corruption."

"There's a difference."

Meanwhile...

Across the financial district...

News had already begun spreading.

Breaking News

Unexpected Leadership Change at Voss Global Holdings

Financial reporters gathered outside corporate headquarters.

Nobody understood what had happened.

Stock prices briefly dipped.

Then...

Something extraordinary occurred.

Instead of collapsing...

Voss Global shares began climbing.

Rapidly.

Analysts were confused.

Then one headline explained everything.

Founder Elena Voss Returns as CEO.

Investors responded immediately.

Confidence surged.

Within forty minutes...

The company had gained more market value than it had lost.

Inside the boardroom...

Twenty-seven directors appeared on enormous video screens from offices around the world.

London.

Singapore.

Tokyo.

Frankfurt.

Toronto.

São Paulo.

Each greeted Elena warmly.

"Welcome back."

"It's good to see you."

"We've waited long enough."

Damian stood frozen outside the glass wall.

He hadn't known.

Not one of them had ever considered him the true leader.

He had simply been...

Temporary.

The chairman officially opened the meeting.

"First agenda item."

"The removal of all executives who violated fiduciary responsibilities."

One by one...

Names appeared.

Seven directors.

Three vice presidents.

Two legal advisers.

Every person who had knowingly assisted Damian's fraudulent decisions.

Removed.

Immediately.

The second agenda item appeared.

Independent Ethics Investigation.

Elena finally spoke.

"For years..."

"Our company rewarded profit."

"Beginning today..."

"We reward integrity."

She paused.

"No executive who intimidates employees..."

"Manipulates financial records..."

"Or abuses authority..."

"...will ever represent this company again."

Every board member voted.

Unanimous.

Outside the building...

Television cameras captured Damian leaving headquarters carrying a single cardboard box.

No limousine waited.

No assistants surrounded him.

Just one former executive walking past reporters who suddenly wanted answers instead of photographs.

"Mr. Brooks!"

"Did you resign?"

"Did Ms. Voss fire you?"

"Is it true she owns fifty-eight percent of the company?"

He kept walking.

For the first time in years...

He had nothing to say.

Veronica caught up with him near the parking garage.

"What are we going to do?"

Damian stopped.

His confidence was gone.

"I don't know."

She grabbed his arm.

"You have connections."

"You know senators."

"Bankers."

"Judges."

"You'll fix this."

He slowly looked at her.

Then quietly admitted something he had never admitted before.

"I don't think I can."

Veronica stared at him.

"What?"

He gave a hollow laugh.

"Everything I thought I controlled..."

"...belonged to her."

That evening...

Elena stood alone in the founder's office.

The city lights shimmered beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Her grandfather's photograph rested on the desk.

She picked it up gently.

"We did it."

A soft knock interrupted the silence.

The chairman entered.

"Ms. Voss..."

"We've completed the audit."

"And?"

"There is something you should see."

He handed her a confidential file.

Its title made her expression change instantly.

Unauthorized Diversion of Foundation Funds.

She slowly opened the first page.

As she read the names involved...

The color drained from her face.

This had never been only about Damian.

Someone far more powerful had been operating behind him...

Someone inside the company she trusted completely.

Elena quietly closed the folder.

Her eyes became cold once again.

"So..."

she whispered.

May you like

"The real game is finally beginning."

TO BE CONTINUE...
