Chapter 3 – The Price of Betrayal (Part 1)

Chapter 3 – The Price of Betrayal (Part 1)

Three days after Richard Halston's arrest, Voss Global Headquarters felt like an entirely different company.

The marble lobby was still as elegant as ever.

The glass elevators still climbed silently through forty-eight floors.

The company logo still overlooked the city skyline.

But the atmosphere had changed.

Employees smiled at one another.

Department heads held meetings with their office doors open.

Anonymous complaints that had remained untouched for years were finally being investigated.

Fear had quietly been replaced with trust.

For Elena, however, there was no time to celebrate.

Her desk was buried beneath investigation reports.

Every folder represented another difficult decision.

Another employee whose career had been built on deception.

Another victim who had stayed silent because they believed no one would listen.

She closed the last report and rubbed her tired eyes.

A soft knock interrupted the silence.

The chairman entered.

"Good morning, Ms. Voss."

She smiled faintly.

"You've stopped calling me Elena."

He chuckled.

"I have."

"Why?"

"Because today you're not only the founder."

He placed a thick envelope on her desk.

"Today you're the woman rebuilding this company."

Inside the envelope was the preliminary audit.

The numbers were staggering.

Nearly eighty million dollars had been diverted over six years.

Dozens of contracts had been manipulated.

Hundreds of employees had received promotions based not on merit, but on loyalty to Damian and Richard.

Elena looked out the window.

"So many people trusted them."

The chairman nodded.

"They trusted the title."

"They forgot character matters more."

Meanwhile...

Damian Brooks sat alone in a small apartment he had rented after selling his penthouse.

The luxurious life had disappeared almost overnight.

The expensive watches were gone.

The sports cars had been repossessed.

The private chef.

The chauffeur.

The assistants.

Everything had vanished.

Only silence remained.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He hesitated before answering.

"This is Damian."

A familiar voice answered.

"Mr. Brooks."

It was Special Agent Laura Bennett from the Financial Crimes Division.

"We'd like you to come in voluntarily."

His heart sank.

"For what?"

"We believe you may have information regarding Richard Halston's financial network."

Damian closed his eyes.

"So I'm a witness now?"

There was a pause.

"That depends on the choices you make today."

Across town, Veronica Hart was having troubles of her own.

Every luxury brand that had once begged her to become their ambassador had quietly terminated its contracts.

Charities removed her from their boards.

Social invitations disappeared.

Even longtime friends stopped answering her calls.

She stared at her reflection in the mirror.

For years she had believed influence came from beauty and proximity to power.

Now she realized something terrifying.

Without Damian's position...

Very few people actually wanted her company.

At Voss Global, Elena called an all-hands meeting.

More than four thousand employees joined in person or through live video.

No dramatic music played.

No flashy presentation filled the giant screen.

Only Elena walked onto the stage.

She wore a simple navy suit.

No expensive jewelry.

No speech prepared on paper.

She looked around the room for several moments before speaking.

"When my grandfather founded this company..."

"...he owned one truck."

"One warehouse."

"And one promise."

She smiled gently.

"He said that a company survives only as long as its people trust it."

The auditorium remained perfectly still.

"We lost that trust."

"Not because of one person."

"But because too many good people believed someone else would fix the problem."

She paused.

"That ends today."

Applause slowly began.

Then grew louder.

Soon the entire auditorium was standing.

Not because she demanded respect.

Because she had earned it.

Later that afternoon, Damian arrived at the federal building.

Agent Bennett greeted him personally.

She led him into an interview room.

On the table sat several familiar folders.

"So," she began calmly.

"Let's talk about Richard Halston."

Damian stared at the documents.

"I didn't know everything."

"We know."

She slid another photograph across the table.

"But we also know you signed these."

He looked down.

The signatures were his.

Every one of them.

His voice was quiet.

"I stopped asking questions."

"Why?"

He answered honestly.

"Because the promotions kept coming."

"And because I liked winning."

Agent Bennett leaned back.

"And now?"

Damian looked toward the small window overlooking the city.

"I don't even know what winning means anymore."

That evening, Elena received unexpected news.

Her assistant entered the office carrying a handwritten letter.

"No return address."

Elena carefully unfolded the paper.

Inside was a single sentence.

There is one more person you still trust.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just those words.

Elena read the sentence again.

Then slowly looked up.

The chairman noticed the change in her expression.

"What is it?"

She folded the letter carefully.

"If this warning is true..."

"...Richard wasn't the last betrayal."

Outside her office window, the lights of the city began to glow as darkness settled over the skyline.

The empire was healing.

May you like

But somewhere inside it...

One final secret was still waiting to be uncovered.
