Chapter 4 - Blood, Fire, and the Vow of the Underworld King

The sun dipped below the Manhattan skyline, painting the clouds in bruised shades of crimson and violet, but inside the perimeter of the Romano Estate, the only light came from the blinding flash of muzzle fire and the amber glow of burning security outposts.

Down in the reinforced subterranean panic suite, the thick concrete walls muffled the distant, rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* of automatic gunfire echoing from the upper gardens. Abigail sat rigidly on a plush leather sofa, her knuckles white as she clutched a glass of water that trembled uncontrollably in her hand. Beside her, Isabella paced back and forth like a caged tigress, her phone pressed tightly to her ear as she barked rapid-fire commands in Italian to the estate’s tactical coordinators.

“Status on the eastern perimeter?” Isabella demanded into the receiver. “Report!... Damn it, keep holding the line! If they breach the greenhouse, flood the sector with tear gas!”

Abigail pressed her palms against her ears, her breathing coming in ragged gasps. Her mind raced with terrifying scenarios. What if Matteo was hurt? What if Richard Sinclair’s mercenaries broke through? All of this was happening because of her—because she had simply gone to work as a catering waitress, tried to do her job, and ended up crossing paths with a psychotic billionaire heiress.

“Isabella,” Abigail called out, her voice cracking. “Isabella, please tell me the truth. Is Matteo going to be okay?”

Isabella ended the call, slipping her smartphone into her pocket, and walked over to kneel beside the sofa. She took Abigail’s cold hands in her own, offering a reassuring, fiercely confident smile that mirrored her brother's unbreakable spirit.

“Listen to me, Abigail,” Isabella said firmly. “You don't know my brother. People hear the word ‘mobster’ or ‘mafia boss’ and they think of movies and cheap drama. Matteo built this empire out of blood, sweat, and absolute iron discipline. He survived a war that wiped out half our family when we were teenagers. A handful of corporate mercenaries hired by a desperate, pathetic coward like Richard Sinclair? They walked into a slaughterhouse, and they don’t even know it yet.”

As if on cue, the muffled explosions above them subsided, replaced by a heavy, eerie silence that was far more unnerving than the chaos of battle.

For five agonizing minutes, neither woman breathed. Every second stretched like an eternity.

Then, the heavy steel security monitor flickered to life on the wall.

The camera feed showed the grand iron doorway of the sub-level elevator descending smoothly. The indicator light chimed gently. *Ding.*

Isabella immediately drew a sleek, matte-black Glock pistol from her shoulder holster, stepping smoothly in front of the sofa to shield Abigail with her own body. Her eyes locked onto the elevator doors as they slid open with a pneumatic hiss.

Out stepped Matteo Romano.

His dark tactical jacket was torn at the shoulder, stained with soot and a dark streak of blood that wasn't his. His hair was slightly disheveled, and the cold, ruthless glare in his eyes was enough to freeze boiling water. But as soon as his gaze landed on Abigail sitting safely on the sofa behind his sister, his entire expression softened instantly.

The weapon in his hand dropped loosely to his side, and he exhaled a long, ragged breath that he had seemingly been holding for hours.

“Matteo!” Abigail cried out, leaping up from the sofa despite the heavy weight of her pregnancy, rushing across the room to throw her arms around his neck.

Matteo dropped his tactical gear clattering to the floor and caught her with fierce, desperate strength, pulling her tightly against his chest as if trying to merge their very souls together.

“Are you hurt? Did any of them touch you?” Matteo murmured frantically against her hair, his voice rough and uneven.

“I’m fine, I’m completely fine! But you’re bleeding—” Abigail pulled back, her fingers trembling as she touched the dark stain on his shoulder.

“It’s nothing. Just a graze,” Matteo said dismissively, cupping her face in both hands and staring down into her eyes with a desperate, burning intensity. “The Vanguard Group has been neutralized. Their commander is in custody, and Richard Sinclair’s offshore accounts have been completely frozen by federal authorities acting on the digital evidence we seized from the mercenaries’ tactical comms. Richard Sinclair is currently sitting in a holding cell at JFK airport, waiting for extradition on federal terrorism and kidnapping charges. His empire is dust, Abigail. He can never hurt you, or anyone else, ever again.”

Abigail stared up at him, tears streaming freely down her cheeks, feeling a profound, overwhelming sense of safety wash over her for the first time in her entire life.

“You went to war for me,” Abigail whispered, her voice breaking. “Why? We barely know each other.”

Matteo smiled—a soft, tender, utterly devoted smile that transformed the dangerous underworld king into a man completely at peace.

“Eight years ago, you saved my sister’s life without asking for my name, my money, or my gratitude,” Matteo whispered, pressing his forehead gently against hers. “You walked into an emergency room as a stranger, and you walked out as my guardian angel. I spent eight years searching the world for you, Abigail. And the second I saw you standing in that ballroom, bruised, exhausted, and fighting to survive, I made a vow to God and myself: nobody will ever make you bleed again. You belong with me.”

May you like

Abigail closed her eyes, letting the tears fall, and nodded against his chest. “Yes,” she whispered softly. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Standing just a few feet away, watching her brother hold the woman who had saved their family, Isabella wiped a stray tear from her cheek and smiled brightly as the nightmare finally came to an end, paving the way for a brand-new dawn.
