The Boy Under the Bed / Chapter 1 / 10 2

Chapter 1

I stood my ground,

refusing to blink.

Vanessa sneered,

stepping into the light.

Marcus moved behind her,

his massive frame blocking the door.

I looked down at the boy,

his frail body shaking.

Mia wrapped her arms around him,

trying to shield him from their gaze.

The air in the room felt heavy,

thick with unspoken threats.

I knew I had to act fast,

before Marcus decided to use force.

My mind raced,

calculating the distance to the window.

I had spent years auditing frauds,

learning how desperate people behaved.

They always made mistakes,

especially when they thought they were winning.

Vanessa crossed her arms,

a wicked smile playing on her lips.

She thought she had me trapped,

cornered in my own home.

But she underestimated a mother's resolve,

and she certainly underestimated me.

I slowly reached into my pocket,

my fingers wrapping around my phone.

The screen was already recording,

capturing every word they said.

I took a deep breath,

steadying my trembling voice.

This was not the time for fear,

it was the time for justice.

I stared directly into Vanessa's eyes,

letting her see my quiet fury.

She shifted slightly,

a flicker of doubt crossing her face.

Marcus took a step forward,

his heavy boots thudding against the floor.

He pointed a thick finger at me,

his voice a low growl.

You think you are smart,

but you are just a sad widow.

Nobody will believe you,

they all think you are crazy.

I smiled then,

a cold and hollow expression.

That is where you are wrong,

I whispered softly.

I have been watching you,

tracking every single cent you stole.

Vanessa's eyes widened,

her confident mask slipping for a second.

What are you talking about,

she demanded sharply.

I pulled out a small key,

holding it up for them to see.

The safety deposit box,

I stated clearly.

I found the fake deeds,

the forged signatures on the transfer papers.

Marcus cursed under his breath,

realizing their plan was unraveling.

The boy under the bed whimpered,

shrinking back against the wall.

Mia stroked his dirty hair,

whispering promises I intended to keep.

You are both going to jail,

I said with finality.

The police are already on their way,

I called them before I came upstairs.

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh,

but it sounded hollow and panicked.

You are bluffing,

she spat out.

Suddenly,

sirens wailed in the distance,

growing louder with every passing second.

Marcus turned pale,

rushing to look out the window.

Red and blue lights flashed,

illuminating the dark suburban street.

It is over,

I told them calmly.

You will never hurt another child,

and you will never touch my daughter again.

Vanessa lunged at me,

her hands curled into claws.

But I was ready,

stepping aside and letting her fall.

She crashed into the dresser,

crying out in pain and frustration.

Marcus tried to run,

but heavy footsteps were already pounding up the stairs.

Officers burst into the room,

their weapons drawn and ready.

Drop to the floor,

the lead detective shouted.

I knelt down beside the bed,

pulling Mia and the boy into a tight hug.

We are safe now,

I whispered into their hair.

May you like

The nightmare is finally over,

and we can begin to heal.
