Chapter 10
The seasons changed beautifully over the next few months,
turning the hot summer into a crisp and colorful autumn.
Leo thrived in his new and deeply loving environment,
gaining healthy weight and growing several noticeable inches.
His pale skin had turned a healthy, rosy shade,
and his quiet demeanor was replaced by a bright, loud laugh.
Mia and Leo were practically absolutely inseparable now,
running through the backyard chasing falling orange leaves.
We celebrated Leo's ninth birthday in our warm kitchen,
baking a massive chocolate cake with thick vanilla frosting.
He blew out the bright candles with a giant smile,
wishing for something he refused to tell anyone out loud.
I bought him a brand new telescope for his present,
setting it up by the large window in his room.
He spent hours looking at the distant, glowing stars,
fascinated by the vastness of the beautiful, dark universe.
One chilly Friday evening after a long work shift,
I found Leo sitting quietly on the living room rug.
He was holding an old, faded photograph in his hands,
staring at it with a deeply intensely sad expression.
I sat down gently on the soft carpet beside him,
putting a warm arm around his small, trembling shoulders.
What are you looking at, sweetheart,
I asked him softly, careful not to startle his focus.
It is a picture of my real mom,
he whispered, a single tear rolling down his cheek.
I looked at the beautiful woman in the old photo,
seeing Leo's bright eyes reflected in her gentle smiling face.
She was very beautiful,
I told him sincerely, wiping the tear from his face.
Do you miss her a lot today,
I asked, knowing the pain of losing a loved one deeply.
He nodded slowly, tracing the edge of the shiny paper,
I wish she could see me now, living here with you.
I pulled him into a tight and incredibly warm hug,
resting my chin gently on the top of his head.
She is watching you every single day, Leo,
I promised him with absolute, unwavering total certainty.
And she is so incredibly proud of the boy you are,
brave and kind and so wonderfully incredibly strong.
He sniffled quietly, burying his face in my soft sweater,
Thank you for saving me from the dark basement, Mom.
My breath caught completely in my tight, emotional throat,
it was the very first time he had ever called me Mom.
I closed my eyes as hot tears streamed down my face,
holding my incredible son tighter against my beating heart.
You saved me too, Leo,
I whispered back into the quiet and peaceful room.
You and Mia gave me a beautiful reason to keep fighting,
when I thought my world had completely fallen apart.
We sat there together on the soft living room floor,
finding immense comfort in our shared, beautiful survival.
Later that night, after both children were fast asleep,
I stood by the kitchen window looking out at the yard.
The moon was bright and full in the dark sky,
casting a silvery glow over the quiet suburban neighborhood.
I thought about my late husband and his untimely death,
wishing he could be here to see our beautiful family now.
But I knew he would be deeply proud of us all,
proud of how fiercely we fought the encroaching terrible darkness.
I turned off the kitchen lights and walked upstairs slowly,
peeking into Leo's room to check on his peaceful sleep.
He was snoring softly under his warm, heavy blue blankets,
the telescope pointing out toward the vast, endless stars.
I walked down the hall to my own quiet bedroom,
feeling a profound sense of absolute, undeniable lasting peace.
The monsters were gone from our lives forever and always,
locked away where they could never hurt another innocent soul.
Our house was no longer a place of secrets and pain,
it was a sanctuary built on love, trust, and fierce protection.

I closed my eyes and drifted off to a deep sleep,
ready to face whatever beautiful tomorrow would bring to us.
