Chapter 2 - The High-Stakes Design Collaboration, the Hidden Underworld Enemies, and the Mafia Boss’s Relentless, Unspoken ProtectionThe executive conference room on the forty-second floor of Villano Industries was larger than Mireia’s entire apartment, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass panels that offered a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline.

Yet, despite the opulent setting, the meetings were strictly business. Over the next three weeks, Mireia met with Darius twice a week to refine the sketches for the Flame and Crescent collection. She brought physical wax molds, gemstone samples, and metallurgical specifications. Darius reviewed every piece with the sharp, analytical eye of a man who managed a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate.
What surprised Mireia the most was his absolute respect for her creative autonomy. Whenever corporate directors attempted to suggest commercial shortcuts to reduce manufacturing costs, Darius silenced them with a single cold glance.
“The collection bears the Villano Foundation name, but the artistic integrity belongs exclusively to Miss Dalton,” Darius stated during a contentious budget meeting. “We do not compromise on quality.”
Yet, as professional as their interactions remained, the ripples of Mireia’s shattered engagement continued to haunt her periphery.
Word of her split from Caleb had spread through their mutual social circle like wildfire. Caleb, bruised by the public humiliation of the restaurant breakup and frantic to salvage his crumbling real estate career, began leaving desperate voicemails and sending long, rambling text messages claiming he had been “manipulated” by Alyssa.
Mireia blocked his number on day two.
Then came the professional retaliation. Caleb’s firm, seeking to curry favor with developers tied to high-end commercial leasing, quietly leaned on several commercial property contacts in Mireia’s neighborhood, attempting to disrupt her studio’s lease renewal.
Mireia didn't discover the sabotage until her landlord slipped an apologetic note under her door, explaining that the building’s corporate management had mysteriously doubled her rent effective next quarter.
Sitting alone in her studio after hours, surrounded by half-soldered silver components, Mireia stared at the eviction notice with a heavy heart. Just when she thought she had escaped the smallness of her old life, Caleb’s petty malice was finding new ways to suffocate her.
The bell above the door chimed.
She looked up, expecting a courier. Instead, Darius Villano stepped into the studio, flanked by his usual quiet security detail. He wore a charcoal overcoat, rain glistening on his broad shoulders.
He took one look at her pale face and the paper in her hand, and his dark eyes narrowed.
“What is that?” Darius asked, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register.
“Nothing,” Mireia lied, folding the notice. “Just commercial landlord adjustments.”
“Show me the paper, Mireia.”
It was the first time he had used her first name without formality. It carried an absolute, commanding weight that made it impossible to refuse.
She handed it to him.
Darius scanned the document in three seconds. He recognized the corporate letterhead instantly—it belonged to a shell company controlled by a mid-level real estate developer who routinely laundered capital for Caleb’s associates.
Without a word, Darius pulled out his encrypted phone and dialed a direct extension.
“Thomas,” Darius said into the phone, his voice cold enough to freeze water. “The commercial lease for the jewelry studio at 414 North Wells Street. Buy the building. Terminate the management contract. And ensure that the previous leasing agent—along with any third parties who authorized this rent hike—are permanently barred from operating within commercial real estate in the state of Illinois.”
He hung up before Thomas could answer.
Mireia stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. “Darius, you can’t just buy a building because my rent went up! That’s... that’s completely excessive!”
“It is efficient,” Darius corrected smoothly, stepping closer. “You are designing a foundational collection for my mother’s legacy. I will not have my lead artisan distracted by petty harassment from a mediocre real estate agent whose former fiancé is an incompetent fool.”
“Caleb doesn't even know you’re involved,” Mireia protested softly.
“He will know by tomorrow morning,” Darius replied, a dark, dangerous smirk touching the corners of his mouth. “Men like Caleb only understand power when it is applied directly to their bottom line.”
The prophecy proved true. By noon the following day, Mireia received an amended lease agreement in the mail—stamped with a zero-balance adjustment for the next five years, signed by a new property management firm owned by Villano Industries. Alongside it was a confidential legal brief confirming that Caleb’s firm had abruptly lost three of its most lucrative commercial leasing accounts due to an sudden, anonymous federal audit into their zoning practices.
Caleb was too busy trying to save his career to ever darken Mireia’s doorstep again.
Yet, as the weeks progressed, a new, far more dangerous shadow fell over them.
The Villano syndicate’s dominance over the Midwestern shipping and industrial sectors had drawn the predatory attention of an aggressive rival syndicate operating out of Detroit, led by a ruthless capo named Viktor Vane. Vane believed Darius was vulnerable during a transitional expansion phase and began testing the edges of Villano territory with violent cargo hijackings and targeted intimidation tactics.
Mireia remained blissfully unaware of the brewing underworld war until the evening of their final design review at the Villano tower.
They were standing over a glass display case examining the master prototypes of the Flame and Crescent pendants—gorgeous, silver-and-sapphire heirlooms that captured both the delicate memory of Darius’s mother and Mireia’s unyielding strength.
“They’re perfect,” Darius murmured, his dark eyes meeting hers across the glass.
“We make a surprisingly good team, Mr. Villano,” Mireia teased softly, a genuine smile breaking across her face.
Before Darius could reply, the secure penthouse doors were violently shoved open.

Thomas, Darius’s head of security, rushed into the room, his face pale and streaked with soot, a bloody gash across his temple.
“Boss!” Thomas shouted, gasping for breath. “Perimeter breach! Vane’s hit squad bypassed the lower security grid using an insider override code. They’re coming up the private elevator right now!”
