Chapter 3 - The Underworld Syndicate War at Red Hook, the Defeat of the Rival Capo, and the Underworld King and Queen’s Reign Over New YorkThe passionate standoff inside the Red Hook warehouse was violently interrupted less than an hour later.

A sharp, deafening explosion echoed from the outer shipping docks, shaking the concrete floor beneath their feet. Red emergency lights flickered to life across the rafters as automated alarm klaxons wailed through the complex.

Mateo pulled back instantly, the romantic tension vanishing as the ruthless capo of the Romano Syndicate snapped back into absolute tactical awareness. He drew a heavy, suppressed sidearm from his shoulder holster with lightning speed.

“Stay behind the container crate,” Mateo ordered, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

“What is that?!” Sienna cried, ducking behind a massive stack of crated goods.

“Dante Moretti,” Mateo snarled, a dark, lethal shadow crossing his features. “The rival family from Brooklyn. They chose tonight to test my perimeter while my attention was divided.”

Outside in the cavernous loading yard, automated gunfire erupted. The Moretti enforcers—hoping to catch the Romano Syndicate off-guard during a leadership transition—had breached the outer gates with two armored technical vehicles.

Mateo moved through the shadows of his warehouse with the deadly, calculated grace of a predator defending its territory. He didn't panic; he orchestrated his men with short, clipped commands over his secure earpiece, cutting off the enemy’s flanks and trapping them inside the fenced courtyard.

From her hiding spot near the crates, Sienna watched in absolute awe and terror as Mateo engaged the attackers. He was a force of nature—fearless, precise, and terrifyingly efficient. In less than ten minutes, the gunfire died down.

Dante Moretti—abandoned by his fleeing men—was dragged into the warehouse by two Romano enforcers, thrown violently onto his knees before Mateo.

Mateo stood over him, his shirt stained with dust, breathing heavily, his dark eyes burning with liquid fire.

“You thought attacking my docks while I was occupied would break my syndicate, Dante?” Mateo whispered, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing death.

Dante spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete, glaring up defiantly. “You’re distracted, Romano! Everyone in the city knows you’ve gone soft over some art chic—!”

He didn't finish the sentence.

Mateo raised his sidearm, the silenced barrel pressing squarely against Dante’s forehead. With a cold, emotionless squeeze of the trigger, the rival capo was neutralized, his threat permanently eradicated from the streets of New York.

Within the hour, the docks were cleared, the bodies were removed, and the Romano Syndicate stood more powerful and undisputed than ever before.

Back inside the private executive office overlooking the Red Hook waterfront, the room was quiet, bathed in the amber glow of desk lamps.

Sienna sat in a leather armchair, holding a glass of water, her hands no longer shaking.

Mateo walked in. He had washed the dust from his hands and changed into a fresh white shirt, looking completely composed, as if he hadn't just executed a rival mob boss thirty minutes prior.

He walked over, kneeling beside her chair, resting his large, warm hands on her knees.

“Are you hurt?” Mateo asked, his voice softening entirely as he looked up into her eyes. “Did the noise frighten you?”

Sienna looked down at the man who commanded empires yet treated her like the only fragile thing in his universe. All the resistance had burned away, leaving only the undeniable truth of what they had become.

“I’m not frightened of you, Mateo,” Sienna whispered, reaching out to cup his strong jawline, her thumb brushing against his stubbled cheek. “I just want you to remember... I chose this. You didn't buy me, and you didn't conquer me. I chose you.”

A breathtaking, genuine smile broke across Mateo’s hard face—a smile he reserved for her alone. He stood up, pulling her out of the chair and into his arms, crushing his lips against hers in a deep, fierce, undeniable kiss that sealed their fate.

The art authenticator and the underworld king had collided like a storm, and as Mateo held her against his heart against the backdrop of the New York harbor, they knew their reign over the city had only just begun.
