CHAPTER 1 — The Arrival of Authority

The heavy oak front doors of the Cherry Hills mansion swung inward,

revealing two imposing police officers,

their sharp eyes immediately sweeping across the lavish room,

taking in the horrific scene before them.

Blood dripped slowly from my chin,

staining my ruined silk blouse,

while the shattered pieces of porcelain lay scattered across the expensive mahogany table.

Victoria immediately rushed toward the front entrance,

her expensive heels clicking loudly against the polished marble floor,

her face twisted into a desperate mask of fake innocence.

"Officers,

there has been a terrible misunderstanding,"

she lied smoothly,

waving her heavily jeweled hands in the air,

trying to physically block their view of the dining room.

"My daughter-in-law simply had a clumsy accident,

she slipped and hit her head on the table,

we were just about to call a doctor for her,"

she continued babbling,

her voice trembling with manufactured concern.

But the older officer completely ignored her theatrical performance,

stepping firmly past her,

his hand resting cautiously on his duty belt,

his eyes locked directly onto my bleeding face.

"Ma'am,

did you make the emergency call?"

he asked me calmly,

his voice carrying an unmistakable tone of absolute authority,

cutting through the heavy silence of the room.

"Yes,"

I replied clearly,

pressing a fresh napkin against my throbbing temple,

refusing to break eye contact with the officer.

"My husband,

Diego,

threw a ceramic dinner plate directly at my head,

because I refused to surrender my personal property to his mother,"

I stated factually,

pointing a steady finger at the man who had promised to protect me.

Diego finally realized the severe gravity of the situation,

his arrogant demeanor vanishing instantly,

replaced by the pathetic panic of a cornered coward.

"Valerie,

tell them you are exaggerating,

tell them it slipped out of my hand,"

he pleaded pathetically,

taking a cautious step toward me,

his hands raised in a fake gesture of surrender.

The second officer immediately stepped between us,

placing a firm,

unyielding hand squarely on Diego's chest,

stopping him completely in his tracks.

"Sir,

you need to step back right now,

keep your hands exactly where I can see them,

and do not say another word to her,"

the officer commanded sternly,

pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

The entire family gasped in collective,

utter shock,

watching in absolute disbelief as the golden child of their powerful dynasty was shoved roughly against the wall.

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed sharply through the dining room,

a beautiful,

liberating sound that signaled the permanent end of my submission,

and the glorious beginning of my vengeance.

My father-in-law finally stood up from his chair,

his face red with furious indignation,

spitting arrogant threats at the officers.

"Do you have any idea who we are,

you cannot arrest my son in his own home,

I will have both of your badges by tomorrow morning,"

he bellowed loudly,

pointing a trembling finger at the police.

"You can make all the phone calls you want tomorrow,

sir,

but tonight,

your son is going to jail for domestic assault,"

the older officer replied coolly,

completely unfazed by the empty threats of a rich man.

Natalie walked quietly to the hallway closet,

ignoring the furious glares of her wealthy relatives,

and gently draped my heavy winter coat over my shivering shoulders.

"The paramedics are pulling into the driveway right now,

Valerie,"

she whispered softly into my ear,

giving my hand a reassuring,

firm squeeze.

"I saw everything he did to you,

and when the detectives ask me,

I will tell them the exact truth,"

she promised bravely,

solidifying a secret alliance that would help me tear this corrupt family apart.

I walked out of that suffocating mansion with my head held high,

leaving the shattered plate,

May you like

and my broken marriage,

far behind me in the dust.
