Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 — Fortifying the Castle

The familiar,

comforting skyline of downtown Denver greeted me as the taxi pulled up to my Capitol Hill building,

the early morning sun reflecting off the tall glass windows.

I walked past the night concierge,

giving him a brief,

polite nod,

ignoring his shocked expression at the sight of my bandaged head and blood-stained clothing.

The moment I stepped inside my beautiful,

spacious condominium,

I felt an overwhelming,

powerful wave of immense relief wash over my tired body.

This was my personal sanctuary,

the fortress I had built with my own sweat,

my own tears,

and my own money,

and absolutely no one was ever going to take it away from me.

My first phone call was not to a friend,

nor to a family member,

but to the most ruthless,

highly recommended emergency locksmith in the entire city of Denver.

Within exactly forty-five minutes,

he had completely removed the old locks from my heavy front door,

replacing them with advanced,

military-grade smart locks that could only be opened with my unique biometric fingerprint.

Next,

I immediately contacted the building's head of security,

providing him with a clear,

high-resolution photograph of Diego,

along with strict,

unbreakable orders to deny him entry under any circumstances.

"If he even steps foot on the front sidewalk,

you are to call the police immediately,

and inform them he is violating an active restraining order,"

I instructed the guard firmly,

handing him a crisp hundred-dollar bill for his guaranteed cooperation.

After securing the physical perimeter of my home,

I sat down at my glass dining table,

opened my laptop,

and began the critical,

methodical process of securing my financial independence.

I instantly transferred every single dollar of my personal savings into a brand new,

highly secure account,

completely freezing the joint checking account I shared with my abusive husband.

By noon,

I was sitting in the sleek,

modern office of Evelyn Vance,

the most feared,

incredibly aggressive divorce attorney in the entire state of Colorado.

Evelyn listened to my horrifying story in absolute,

calculated silence,

her sharp eyes scanning the detailed police report,

and the graphic hospital photographs of my bloody injuries.

"Your husband's family is incredibly wealthy,

Valerie,

but wealth often creates a dangerous,

blind arrogance that we can easily exploit in a courtroom,"

Evelyn said sharply,

tapping her expensive pen against the mahogany desk.

"They will undoubtedly try to claim your condominium is a shared marital asset,

but since you purchased it entirely with separate funds,

we will crush that argument instantly,"

she promised confidently,

drafting a comprehensive,

ironclad legal strategy on her notepad.

"I don't just want to keep my apartment,

Evelyn,"

I said coldly,

leaning forward in my leather chair,

staring directly into the lawyer's calculating eyes.

"I want Diego to pay for the assault,

I want a permanent,

lifelong restraining order,

and I want to expose the financial fraud his family uses to maintain their fake empire,"

I demanded firmly,

refusing to settle for anything less than total victory.

Evelyn smiled a slow,

dangerous smile,

the kind of smile a predator makes right before it completely devours its unsuspecting prey.

"I think you and I are going to work together perfectly,

Valerie,"

she purred softly,

handing me a thick stack of complicated legal documents to sign.

Later that evening,

my newly installed security cameras chimed softly,

sending a live video feed directly to my smartphone,

showing Diego pounding furiously against the building's reinforced glass doors.

He looked utterly pathetic,

disheveled and enraged,

screaming my name loudly into the intercom,

demanding that I let him inside to explain his unforgivable actions.

I simply watched him from the safety of my couch,

sipping a hot cup of green tea,

May you like

and pressed the single,

satisfying button that immediately dispatched the police to arrest him again.
