Chapter 2 - The Twin Secret Behind the Ultrasound Screen and the Billionaire’s Blind Panic

The doctor’s breath hitched slightly before she looked back up at me, her eyes wide with professional disbelief. “Mrs. Moretti... or should I say, Miss Moretti, given your chart notes,” she began carefully, pointing back to the glowing grayscale monitor. “You aren't just carrying one heartbeat. Look closely right here. And right here.” I leaned forward, my hands gripping the examination table until my knuckles turned white. Two distinct, rhythmic flickers pulsed against the dark background, perfectly synchronized yet entirely separate. “Twins?” I whispered, the word feeling foreign and terrifying on my tongue. “Not just twins,” the doctor corrected gently. “Monochorionic-diamniotic twins. And based on the developmental metrics, you are carrying two distinct, healthy little lives.”

My mind spun into a chaotic vortex. For five years, Dante and I had quietly discussed starting a family, only for his endless corporate acquisitions, late-night board meetings, and emotional detachment to push the conversation further into the background. Now, carrying half of the man who had traded our half-decade marriage for a momentary thrill with Sofia Vale, I was suddenly bound to him by blood—twice over. But sitting there in that quiet clinic, a fierce, protective maternal instinct slammed into my chest, eclipsing the heartbreak. Dante Moretti thought he could have his mistress, his multi-billion-dollar empire, and a quiet, submissive wife waiting at home. He had lost all rights to me the moment he kissed Sofia on our anniversary. And he certainly was never going to know about his children.

Back in his downtown headquarters, however, Dante’s world was rapidly imploding. When he returned to the penthouse at dawn expecting to find me sulking in the master bedroom, he found an empty closet, a pristine wedding ring resting on the foyer table next to a formal legal separation notice, and absolute radio silence on my phone. By noon, his frantic inquiries revealed I had checked out of our social circles entirely, vanishing into thin air. The ruthless billionaire who commanded Chicago’s financial landscape found himself paralyzed by a terrifying, hollow ache in his chest. He had spent years treating his marriage like an asset to be managed rather than a bond to be cherished, and now, the foundation of his entire existence was crumbling because he couldn't keep his hands off his assistant. Little did he know, his punishment had only just begun, and the vacuum I left behind was about to be filled by a double heartbeat he didn't deserve to share.
