Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confrontation and the Ultimate Legal Checkmate

“Lena,” Dante breathed, his voice cracking slightly as he rounded the table, ignoring the startled murmurs of the twelve board members. He reached out as if to touch my arm, his dark eyes filled with a desperate mixture of disbelief, relief, and lingering guilt. “Where have you been? Do you have any idea what kind of hell I’ve been living through? You can’t just disappear! We need to talk—privately.” I didn't flinch. I raised my hand slightly, stopping him inches away, and offered a cold, composed smile that chilled him to the bone. “Sit down, Dante,” I instructed, my voice carrying a smooth, authoritative ring that commanded the entire room. “You are in a board meeting, and as an active voting shareholder and principal plaintiff in our ongoing divorce proceedings, I suggest you listen very carefully to what my legal counsel has to present.”
My attorney stepped forward, placing thick, leather-bound forensic accounting folios in front of every director. “Ladies and gentlemen, effective immediately, Mrs. Moretti is exercising her controlling interest to audit all subsidiary asset transfers executed over the past twelve months,” my lawyer announced crisply. “Furthermore, filings submitted this morning establish systemic financial dissipation of marital property related to unauthorized corporate expenditures”—a thinly veiled reference to the luxury apartments and gifts Dante had lavished on Sofia Vale and other corporate hangers-on before I caught them. The board members exchanged terrified glances; they knew that if I tore into the corporate ledgers, several corrupt vice presidents would face immediate federal indictment.

Dante ignored the paperwork entirely, keeping his burning gaze fixed solely on me. When the board took a recess under my lawyer's sharp direction, the heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving the two of us alone in the cavernous room. Dante slammed his hands onto the polished table, leaning over toward me, his composure finally shattering. “Are you trying to ruin me, Lena?” he demanded, his chest heaving. “Is this what you wanted? To destroy everything I’ve built just because of a mistake?” I slowly stood up, placing both hands flat on the table, leaning forward to meet his gaze eye-to-eye. I let my coat part slightly, revealing the undeniable, rounded silhouette of my five-month pregnancy.
Dante froze. His eyes dropped instantly to my stomach. The color drained completely from his face as his brain struggled to compute the visual reality standing right in front of him. “You’re... you’re pregnant?” he whispered, his voice trembling violently as his hand hovered in the empty air between us. “How... when...?” I looked down at him with profound, icy pity. “You were too busy building an empire and warming your bed with your assistant to notice anything, Dante,” I said softly. “And you will never, ever be part of their lives.” Before he could utter another syllable, I turned on my heel and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the most powerful billionaire in Chicago utterly destroyed.
