Chapter 1 - The Seventy-Two-Email Friday, the Westchester Christmas Trap, and the Underworld Boss’s Shocking Fake Girlfriend ProposalBy four-thirty on the last Friday before Christmas, my boss had already survived seventy-two emails, a state senator’s dinner disaster, a penthouse delivery mistake, and a contractor who nearly cost him half a million dollars. None of that prepared me for what Luca Moretti said next: “Come home with me tonight—as my girlfriend.”

My name is Emma Hayes, and being Luca Moretti’s executive assistant meant keeping chaos invisible. My hair was twisted into a practical knot, my glasses kept sliding down my nose, and the legal pad on my desk was filled with handwriting as controlled as I pretended my life was.
In Manhattan, Luca was known as the ruthless head of Moretti Holdings, a man who bought buildings, moved money, and never needed to raise his voice. Beneath the polished version of his reputation, though, people whispered that the Moretti family had roots far darker than real estate.
Nobody said mafia around the office.
They didn’t have to.
Rumors followed Luca’s last name everywhere—old loyalties, dangerous favors, men who disappeared from negotiations and returned suddenly cooperative. His father had supposedly ruled through fear, while Luca had inherited the same power and turned it into something quieter, colder, and somehow more frightening.
My rule was simple: never ask questions that weren’t part of my job. In Luca’s world, curiosity didn’t earn answers; it got doors slammed shut.
So when his office door opened and his voice cut across the silent executive floor, every assistant nearby froze.
“Emma. In here.”
I stood immediately and walked inside with my legal pad pressed against my chest. Behind Luca, floor-to-ceiling windows turned the gray December sky into pale light, while a white-and-gold Christmas tree glittered beside the glass like even Christmas needed security clearance.
He stood near his desk in shirtsleeves, his dark hair pushed back and his tie loosened slightly. To anyone else, he looked perfectly calm, but I had worked beside him long enough to notice the tension set into his jaw.
A problem.
“Is the Westchester security team confirmed for tonight?” I asked, flipping through my notes. “If it’s the guest list, I can have Sienna verify every arrival window again.”
“It’s not logistics.”
My fingers stopped.
That was worse.
Luca moved around the desk and leaned against it, folding his arms. “My family Christmas party is tonight.”
“I know. Your aunt called twice about the wine, your grandmother’s flowers arrived an hour ago, and Julian sent another message asking whether you were finally bringing a date.”
“I am.”
A strange pause stretched between us.
“All right,” I said carefully.
“With you.”
For several seconds, I genuinely wondered whether exhaustion had finally broken my brain. Luca Moretti did not joke, flirt with employees, or make spontaneous personal requests, yet he was staring at me as though he had just asked me to confirm a dinner reservation.
“I’m sorry?”
“I want you to come with me tonight as my girlfriend.”
The legal pad slowly lowered into my lap.
“Your fake girlfriend.”
“Yes.”
A laugh almost escaped me, but the expression on his face killed it immediately. “Why would you need me to pretend to be your girlfriend?”
His eyes stayed locked on mine.
“My family has decided it’s time for me to choose someone.”
A cold feeling moved down my spine. “Choose someone for what?”
Luca pushed away from the desk and came closer, stopping only a few feet from me. “Marriage.”
My mouth went dry.
“And bringing me somehow fixes that?”
“For tonight.”
Something in the way he said it made my pulse jump. “Luca, your family already knows I work for you. They’re going to know this isn’t real.”
For the first time, his expression shifted.
“They won’t after I tell them what I intend to tell them.”
My grip tightened around the legal pad. “And what exactly are you planning to tell your family?”
Luca looked at me for a long, unnerving second before answering.
“That you’re the only woman I would ever choose.”
The air in the office vanished. My heart hammered against my ribs with terrifying velocity. For four years, I had memorized every detail of Luca Moretti’s life—his coffee preference, his flight schedules, the exact cadence of his voice when he was about to crush a competitor—while burying the secret, burning realization that I was utterly, hopelessly in love with him.
And now, trapped in his penthouse suite with the snow beginning to blur the Manhattan skyline, he was asking me to step directly into the lion’s den of his dangerous, powerful family and play the role of the woman who had finally conquered his cold heart.
“You’re insane,” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the HVAC unit.
“Perhaps,” Luca replied, his dark eyes darkening further as he closed the remaining distance between us, his broad chest looming over me. “But my car leaves in forty minutes, Emma. You can quit right now, walk out that door, and pretend this conversation never happened. Or you can take the risk of a lifetime, step into the black Mercedes downstairs, and let me handle the rest.”
I stared up at him, my mind spinning through the catastrophic professional and personal consequences. If I said yes, I was crossing a line from which there was no return. If I said no, I would spend every remaining day of my life wondering what might have happened if I had dared to cross it.

I looked down at my legal pad, then back up at the most dangerous man in the city.
“Give me five minutes to fix my hair,” I said.
