Chapter 3 - The Underworld Syndicate War at the Docks, the Eradication of the Rival Saboteur, and the Underworld King and Queen’s Triumphant Holiday DawnThe romantic stillness of the Westchester balcony was shattered at 3:00 a.m. by the harsh, insistent buzz of Luca’s encrypted satellite phone.

He pulled back slowly, resting his forehead against mine for a fraction of a second before answering the call.
“Speak,” Luca commanded coldly.
I watched the transformation. In an instant, the vulnerable, confessing man vanished, replaced by the ruthless, calculating head of Moretti Holdings.
“Boss, we have a major breach at the Brooklyn container terminals,” Thomas, his head of security, reported tersely over the speaker. “A rival faction backed by the Rossi family just firebombed Berth 4. They’re trying to intercept the European shipments before the morning audits.”
Luca’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle ticked along his cheekbone. “Lock down the perimeter. I’m five minutes out.”
He hung up, slipping the phone into his coat pocket. He looked down at me, his dark eyes burning with an intense, protective fury. “Emma, stay inside the mansion. Lock the doors. I have to go to Brooklyn.”
“No,” I said, stepping forward and gripping the lapels of his suit jacket.
Luca frowned. “Emma, this isn't office paperwork. It’s an active syndicate war zone.”
“I’ve reconciled every shipping manifest, offshore wire transfer, and asset acquisition for Moretti Holdings for four years,” I stated, my voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable authority. “You think I don't know where the vulnerabilities are? You think I’m staying behind while someone tries to burn down the empire I helped you build?”
Luca stared at me. For three seconds, he looked as though he wanted to argue, to lock me in a tower for my own safety. Then, a fierce, proud smile broke across his hard face.
“Get your coat,” he murmured.
Forty minutes later, the Brooklyn container terminals resembled an industrial war zone. Flames leaped into the winter sky from a burning gantry crane, while private security enforcers exchanged heavy fire with a dozen rogue saboteurs sent by the Rossi family.
Instead of waiting in the armored SUV, I sat in the passenger seat of Luca’s command vehicle, working off an encrypted tactical laptop connected directly to the port’s master logistics grid.
“They didn't just bomb Berth 4 to destroy cargo,” I announced rapidly, typing commands with lightning speed. “Look at the routing codes. They’re trying to divert the digital customs encryption keys to an offshore IP address in Palermo!”
Luca leaned over the center console, tracking the data streams. “Can you lock them out?”
“Give me sixty seconds,” I muttered, biting my lower lip in intense concentration.
Outside, Luca’s enforcers—led by Julian, who had shed his party tuxedo for tactical gear—swept through the container stacks with ruthless precision, cutting off the saboteurs’ retreat and securing the perimeter in a lightning-fast counter-attack.
On my screen, a red firewall indicator flashed BREACH DETECTED.
“Got them,” I whispered triumphantly, executing a master system override. “Encryption keys secured. Their entire terminal access vector has just been permanently burned.”
Luca let out a dark, approving breath. He pulled his encrypted phone and dialed a direct line to the Rossi family patriarch.
“This is Luca Moretti,” he said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing death that made the air inside the vehicle feel sub-zero. “Your little errand boys at Berth 4 have just been neutralized. Try touching my shipping channels again, and I won't just burn your containers—I’ll take your entire district by morning.”
He hung up before the Rossi boss could even form a reply.
By sunrise, the fire at Berth 4 had been extinguished, the saboteurs were zip-tied in the back of transport vans, and the Brooklyn terminal was operating with its usual, clockwork precision.
Back at the Manhattan penthouse, the gray morning light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a peaceful glow across the white-and-gold Christmas tree.
I stood by the glass, wearing one of Luca’s oversized dress shirts, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, watching the city wake up beneath a blanket of fresh snow.
The heavy office door clicked open.
Luca walked in. He had discarded his tactical gear, wearing a fresh gray cashmere sweater, holding a small, elegant velvet box in his hand.
He walked over, stopping just inches away, and wrapped his strong arms securely around my waist from behind, resting his chin softly against my hair.
“The board of directors is going to be exceptionally confused when they find out their ruthless syndicate boss is marrying his executive assistant,” Luca murmured into my ear, a deep, rich amusement warming his tone.
I leaned back against his solid chest, smiling brilliantly.
“Let them be confused,” I whispered, turning around in his embrace and wrapping my arms around his neck. “They’ll just have to adjust to the new management.”
