Chapter 2

And Elena—Elena found herself no longer just the quiet, invisible nanny managing the household schedule. She had become the anchor of Matteo’s chaotic world, an equal force who could challenge him, check his temper, and make him laugh with a single dry remark.

Yet, in the brutal ecosystem of the New York underworld, peace was never permanent.

It was a crisp Thursday evening when the storm broke. Matteo had taken Leo and Elena out for an impromptu dinner at an upscale Italian restaurant in downtown Manhattan, wanting to celebrate Leo’s recent spelling bee victory. They were riding in the back of Matteo’s heavily armored black Maybach, escorted by two secondary security vehicles carrying Stefano Greco and his tactical enforcers.

The city lights blurred past the tinted windows. Leo was fast asleep with his head resting comfortably against Elena’s shoulder, a half-eaten cannoli wrapper clutched in his small hand. Matteo sat opposite them, watching the two of them with a quiet, profound contentment that would have shocked anyone who knew his terrifying reputation.

Suddenly, the Maybach shuddered violently.

BANG! BANG-BANG-BANG!

The sharp, deafening cracks of high-caliber assault rifle fire shattered the peaceful evening air, riddling the passenger-side doors with glowing amber sparks as armor-piercing rounds chewed through the ballistic steel.

“Ambush! Down! Get down!” Stefano Greco roared over the encrypted comms radio.

Panic surged through the cabin. The front lead escort vehicle swerved wildly, slamming into a concrete divider as its tires were blown out in a shower of sparks. Two black SUVs carrying rival North Side enforcers boxed the Maybach in from both sides, doors flying open as men in tactical gear raised automatic weapons, unleashing a merciless torrent of lead.

Matteo didn't hesitate. His mobster instincts flared into lethal, razor-sharp focus. He unholstered his custom Sig Sauer in a fraction of a second, his slate-grey eyes hardening into absolute ice.

“Elena, stay down on the floorboards with Leo! Cover his head!” Matteo commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

“Matteo, no! They have rifles! There’s too many of them!” Elena screamed, her heart hammering against her ribs as glass exploded inward, showering the leather interior with glittering shards.

Before Matteo could push open his door to return fire, one of the North Side assassins bypassed the security guards, vaulted onto the hood of the Maybach, and raised a suppressed submachine gun directly toward the rear passenger window, aiming straight at Matteo’s chest.

Matteo raised his pistol, but the assassin was positioned at a blind angle, ready to pull the trigger first.

Without a single microsecond of hesitation, before Matteo could react, Elena unbuckled her seatbelt, threw her body over the sleeping boy, and stretched her arm outward, using her own shoulder and back as a living shield between the assassin's barrel and Matteo.

THUMP!

A muffled round tore through the laminated glass, embedding itself squarely into the leather upholstery inches from Elena’s ear, grazing the fabric of her jacket and sending a sharp, burning sting across her upper arm.

“Elena!” Matteo roared, a sound of pure, unadulterated primal terror that had never escaped his lips in thirty--five years of gang warfare.

Before the assassin could fire a second round, Matteo’s pistol barked twice through the broken window. The gunman took both rounds to the chest, tumbling off the hood of the Maybach and crashing hard onto the asphalt.

Outside, Stefano Greco and the remaining tactical guards rallied, returning ferocious suppressive fire that sent the surviving North Side gunmen scrambling back into their vehicles and screeching away into the night before the NYPD could respond.

The highway fell into a heavy, terrifying silence, broken only by the hiss of the Maybach’s radiator and Leo’s whimpering cries as he woke up in a state of absolute shock.

Matteo dropped his weapon onto the floor, scrambled across the leather seating, and pulled Elena into his arms, his hands trembling violently as he checked her for blood.

“Are you insane?!” Matteo shouted, his voice cracking with raw emotion, tears of sheer panic shining in his dark eyes. “Why would you throw yourself in front of a bullet?! You could have been killed!”

“You have a son who needs his father, Matteo,” Elena gasped, pressing her hand against her stinging arm, tears spilling down her cheeks as she looked into his terrified face. “I just... I couldn't let him lose you.”

Matteo pulled her flush against his chest, holding her so tight it felt as though he were trying to weld her bones to his own. He buried his face in her hair, breathing in the scent of her shampoo, realizing with terrifying clarity that the quiet, unassuming nanny had become the very center of his universe.

And the men who had ordered this hit were going to pay with their lives.
