Chapter 10
They stood outside her penthouse door,
the quiet hum of the building the only sound in the hallway.
Alexander looked down at her,
his tall frame casting a protective shadow over her.
"I had a wonderful time tonight,"
Jacqueline said softly,
looking up into his striking gray eyes.
"So did I,"
he replied,
taking a step closer,
erasing the remaining distance between them.
He reached up,
his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
His touch sent a shiver down her spine,
waking up parts of her soul that had been dormant for years.
"I want to kiss you, Jacqueline,"
he murmured,
his voice rough,
asking for permission but demanding her surrender.
Jacqueline’s breath hitched,
and she nodded slightly,
her eyes fluttering shut.
Alexander leaned down,
his lips meeting hers in a kiss that was slow,
deep,
and incredibly thorough.
It was not a tentative first kiss,
it was a claim,
a promise of passion and loyalty.
She wrapped her arms around his neck,
pulling him closer,
getting lost in the intoxicating scent of cedar and power that clung to his skin.
When they finally broke apart,
they were both breathing heavily.
Alexander rested his forehead against hers,
a satisfied smile playing on his lips.
"Goodnight, Jacqueline,"
he whispered,
stepping back reluctantly.
"Goodnight, Alexander,"
she replied,
watching him walk toward the elevator with a pounding heart.
The next morning,
the business world was rocked by a massive announcement.
Sinclair Capital and Thorne Industries were merging their logistics and defense divisions,
creating an unstoppable corporate behemoth.
The press conference was held in the grand lobby of Apex Tower.
Jacqueline stood behind the podium,
looking powerful and radiant,
with Alexander standing solidly by her side.
"This partnership represents a new era for Washington,"
Jacqueline announced to the flashing cameras.
"Together,
we will build a legacy of innovation,
strength,
and unwavering integrity."
At the back of the crowd of reporters,
standing in the shadows,
was Julian Vance.
He looked ragged,
his eyes hollow as he watched the woman he had thrown away command the room.
He saw the way Alexander looked at her,
with deep respect and fierce devotion.
He saw the way Jacqueline smiled,
a true,
happy smile that she had never shown him during their five years together.
Julian turned around,
pulling his collar up against the chill of the air-conditioned lobby,
and walked out the doors.
He walked into the busy streets of the city,
disappearing into the crowd,
a forgotten man in a world that had moved on without him.
Jacqueline did not notice him leave.
She was looking at Alexander,
her partner,
her equal,
her future.
Karma had knocked on the door,
May you like
but love had invited her inside,
and Jacqueline Sinclair was finally home.
