Chapter 6

I broke the news to Chloe later that evening,

sitting beside her on the comfortable living room sofa,

while a warm fire crackled cheerfully in the stone hearth.

I held her hand tightly,

speaking in a low and incredibly gentle voice,

as I explained what the FBI had discovered in Julian's hidden safe.

When I told her about the other women,

the victims who had suffered in silence long before she ever met him,

Chloe did not cry or retreat into her protective shell.

Instead,

a profound and absolute stillness settled over her features,

and her grip on my hand became surprisingly strong and resolute.

She stared into the dancing orange flames of the fire,

processing the horrific magnitude of his serial cruelty,

and I could physically see the lingering fear burning away into pure and righteous anger.

I will testify,

she said firmly,

her voice completely devoid of the trembling hesitation that had plagued her for years.

I will stand up in that courtroom,

and I will look him directly in the eyes,

and I will tell the entire world exactly what kind of monster he truly is.

I hugged her,

feeling an overwhelming and fierce pride in her incredible bravery,

knowing the immense psychological toll this decision would take on her.

The preparation for the grand jury began the very next morning,

with our attorney and Agent Miller arriving at the cottage early,

carrying boxes of evidence and legal transcripts to review.

They walked Chloe through the excruciating details of the questioning,

preparing her for the aggressive and cruel tactics that Julian's lawyers would undoubtedly use,

and teaching her how to remain calm under extreme and hostile pressure.

It was a grueling and emotionally exhausting process,

forcing her to recount every instance of physical violence and emotional manipulation,

and cataloging the exact dates and times of his horrific outbursts.

But with every passing day of preparation,

Chloe seemed to grow stronger and more self-assured,

finding a powerful and undeniable voice that Julian had spent years trying to violently extinguish.

One afternoon,

while the lawyers were taking a short break on the front porch,

my phone rang with an unknown and blocked caller ID.

I answered it cautiously,

stepping into the quiet hallway to avoid disturbing the ongoing strategy session,

and the sound of the voice on the other end made my blood freeze instantly.

It was Julian,

calling from a contraband cell phone smuggled into the federal detention center,

and his tone was terrifyingly calm and conversational.

Tell my beautiful wife that she looks stunning in her yellow maternity dress,

he whispered through the static,

and tell her that no matter where she runs, I will always find a way back to her.

The phone clicked dead,

leaving me standing in the hallway with my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs,

and a cold sweat breaking out across my forehead.

He had someone watching us,

a private investigator or a loyal associate who had tracked us to the secluded cottage,

and he wanted us to know that we were never truly safe.

I walked out onto the porch,

interrupting the attorneys with a sharp and commanding gesture,

and I demanded that Agent Miller dispatch a security detail to the property immediately.

Julian is trying to intimidate us,

I explained,

my voice tight with fury and absolute determination,

and I will not let him ruin the incredible progress she has made today.

Agent Miller made the call without a single moment of hesitation,

and within an hour, two armed federal marshals were stationed at the end of the dirt road,

ensuring that the monster remained locked entirely out of our sanctuary.
