Chapter 8

The grand jury indictment was handed down the following morning,

and the news hit the national media like a massive and unstoppable tidal wave,

completely destroying whatever tiny fragments of Julian's reputation still remained intact.

The hospital board,

terrified of being legally implicated in his sprawling web of financial corruption,

issued a harsh and immediate public statement completely severing all ties with their former star surgeon.

They announced a massive internal audit,

hiring an independent investigative firm to scrub every single financial record from the past ten years,

and they offered full cooperation to the federal authorities building the case against him.

Julian's world was rapidly and violently collapsing around him,

and the sheer desperation of his situation began to manifest in incredibly erratic and dangerous ways.

Despite being held in maximum security isolation,

he managed to bribe a corrupt corrections officer,

using a secret, unmonitored burner phone to orchestrate a desperate final attack against our credibility.

A series of fabricated, highly damaging rumors suddenly appeared on sleazy gossip blogs,

accusing Chloe of engaging in multiple illicit affairs,

and falsely claiming that the child she was carrying was not actually his biological baby.

I read the vicious articles on my laptop,

my blood boiling with an intense and murderous rage,

knowing exactly who was pulling the strings from behind the cold, steel bars of his prison cell.

Chloe saw the headlines before I could hide the computer,

but instead of breaking down into a spiral of shame and panic,

she simply rolled her eyes in absolute and profound disgust.

He is pathetic,

she stated calmly,

pouring herself a glass of fresh orange juice and taking a seat at the kitchen counter,

completely unfazed by his pathetic and desperate attempts to ruin her spirit.

He thinks that public embarrassment will force me to drop the charges,

she continued,

but he fundamentally underestimates how much I do not care about the opinions of strangers anymore.

I contacted our attorney immediately,

forwarding the malicious articles and demanding a full investigation into the source of the slander,

which quickly led the FBI straight back to the compromised prison guard.

The guard was swiftly arrested and charged with federal obstruction of justice,

and Julian's cell was ruthlessly tossed and stripped of all contraband items,

cutting off his very last illicit connection to the outside world.

Agent Miller called to deliver the satisfying news,

informing me that Julian had been placed in solitary confinement for the duration of his pre-trial detention,

completely isolated from any mechanism of control or manipulation.

The silence that followed was incredibly beautiful,

a deep and profound peace that settled over the cottage like a thick, comforting blanket,

allowing Chloe to focus entirely on the imminent arrival of her baby.

We spent our days decorating the small nursery I had set up in the spare bedroom,

painting the walls a soft, calming shade of seafoam green,

and assembling a beautiful white crib that would soon hold the most precious life in the world.

Every time I looked at my daughter,

May you like

I saw a fierce and unbreakable warrior emerging from the ashes of her trauma,

and I knew that Julian Thorne had already lost the war long before the trial even began.
