Chapter 2 - The Auction House Infiltration, the Stolen Seal of the Underworld King, and the Dangerous Confrontation That Stunned the SyndicateRain polished the black stone outside the Moretti Maritime Exchange, turning harbor lights into trembling ribbons of gold.

No photo description available.

Beyond the bronze doors, a string quartet played beneath crystal chandeliers. The air carried salt, cigar smoke, and the dry scent of old paper.

Evelyn entered through the catering corridor wearing a borrowed server’s jacket over her evening dress.

The encrypted photographs were secured inside a slim leather folder against her ribs.

No invitation carried her name.

That stopped mattering when she slipped between 2 closing service doors and joined the masked bidders gathered around a mahogany auction table.

Luca Moretti sat at its head.

Motionless beneath a cone of amber light.

His charcoal suit carried no ornament except a silver watch.

Yet every lowered voice and guarded glance in the room bent toward him.

An auctioneer raised a ledger recovered from a bankrupt shipping house.

Before the first bid could be called, Evelyn crossed the marble floor and placed her folder over the lot.

The impact was quiet.

The quartet stopped anyway.

2 security men moved toward her.

Luca raised 1 finger.

They froze.

“Miss Hart,” he said after reading the identification card she had placed beside the evidence. “You entered a private sale without permission.”

Evelyn remained standing.

“And Adrien Cole entered your financial network without yours.”

A cold draft moved in from the harbor as Luca opened the folder.

Evelyn had printed only enough pages to establish the forgery: Adrien’s laundering agreement, the false marital designation, and the authorization bearing the Moretti Maritime Holdings seal.

The complete archive remained beyond the room and beyond anyone’s immediate reach.

Luca studied the first page.

His thumb stopped over the seal.

“Where did you get this?”

“From the man pretending to be my husband.”

A murmur moved around the table.

Luca raised his eyes.

“Are you asking for protection?”

“No.”

Evelyn slid Adrien’s handwritten note beneath his hand.

“I’m warning you that he forged my signature, used your company as a laundering channel, and intends to seize my inherited shares. If regulators find this before you do, his fraud becomes your scandal.”

1 of Luca’s advisers reached toward the evidence.

Evelyn closed her hand over the folder.

“Copies stay with me.”

The adviser stiffened.

Luca leaned back.

“You trespassed into my house, interrupted my business, and accused someone of operating under my seal.”

“Your seal is either stolen, or you approved the weapon Adrien built for me. I came to learn which.”

Luca examined her for several seconds.

Then he broke the wax impression from the copied agreement and held it beneath the chandelier.

“The outer ring is wrong.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What?”

“The embossing tool was custom-made,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register that quieted every breathing thing in the room. “My crest features seven strands in the lion’s mane. This forgery only shows six. Someone outside my organization tried to copy it and failed.”

The revelation hit Evelyn with physical force.

Adrien hadn't just faked her marriage; he had faked the very syndicate backing he was using to insulate his crimes. He had played a dangerous, reckless game, betting that Luca Moretti was too vast and too distant to notice a fraudulent endorsement buried deep inside a shell corporation.

“He thought he could use your name as a shield,” Evelyn said, her voice tightening with cold fury. “He thought if things went south, federal investigators would chase your ghost while he walked away with my family's entire legacy.”

Luca stood up slowly. He was taller than she expected, possessing the quiet, immovable presence of a man who didn't need to shout to make nations tremble. He walked around the mahogany table until he stood mere inches from her. The scent of ozone, expensive bourbon, and old leather washed over her.

“You broke into my exchange, Miss Hart, carrying evidence of a felony that directly insults my business integrity,” Luca murmured, his dark eyes locked onto hers with piercing intensity. “By all rights, my men should be dragging you out toward the harbor right now.”

“Instead of what?” Evelyn asked, lifting her chin to meet his terrifying gaze without an ounce of hesitation.

“Instead of that,” Luca said, a dangerous, rare smirk touching the corners of his mouth, “I find myself deeply amused by a woman who walks into the lion's den just to check if the teeth are real.”

He turned to his chief security officer. “Find Adrien Cole. Bring him and the corporate files to my private estate by noon tomorrow. Do not let him know why, and do not let him leave his apartment until my team arrives.”

“Yes, Boss,” the enforcer replied sharply.

Luca turned his attention back to Evelyn, his gaze softening into something intense and deeply assessing. “As for you, Evelyn Hart... you are coming with me. If we are going to dismantle the man who tried to rewrite your life, I want the architect of this exposure sitting in the front row.”
