Chapter 1

Three months after our wedding in Chicago, the smell of cooking oil started making me sick. I couldn’t keep food down, so I went to the hospital convinced something was wrong with my stomach. Instead, the doctor smiled and pushed the ultrasound report toward me.
“Congratulations, Mrs. Carter. Twins. A boy and a girl. Both perfectly healthy.”
My husband, Adrian Carter, went completely still beside me. For five full seconds, neither of us spoke. Then Adrian—the man half of Chicago’s criminal underworld was terrified to look in the eye—cleared his throat.
“Doctor,” he said hoarsely, “are you absolutely sure that’s my wife’s chart?”
The doctor laughed gently and checked again. “Emily Carter. No mistake.”
My hands turned cold. Three years earlier, another doctor had told me my chances of conceiving naturally were nearly zero. My boyfriend at the time, Ethan Blake, had sat beside me in silence before finally saying, “Emily, my mother wants grandchildren. We should end this.” He left me without hesitation. Years later, I met Adrian through an arranged introduction. Everyone knew his name. He controlled clubs, casinos, construction companies, and businesses nobody asked questions about, yet the man sitting across from me that first night had spoken with surprising honesty.
“I can’t have children,” he told me. “If that matters to you, walk away now.”
I had almost laughed. “That makes two of us.”
That was how we married. But now, walking out of the hospital with twins growing inside me, Adrian’s silence felt unbearable.
“Adrian,” I finally whispered. “Do you think I cheated on you?”
He stopped in the hallway and looked at me. Then he took my hand. “No.”
One word. No suspicion. No accusation. Only fear.
We didn’t speak again until his black Bentley rolled into the underground garage beneath our estate. Adrian shut off the engine but didn’t move. “Emily,” he said quietly. “I lied to you.”
My heart dropped. “I’m not infertile.”
I stared at him. Adrian lowered his eyes, and for the first time since I had known him, the ruthless mafia boss looked ashamed. “My family kept trying to force me into marriages with other crime families. Alliances. Bloodlines. Heirs.” His jaw tightened. “So I told everyone I couldn’t father children.” He looked back at me. “I wanted a woman who wanted me, not my name, my money, or the empire a son could inherit.”
Tears filled my eyes. “Then why were you terrified at the hospital?”
“Because I thought you’d realize I deceived you.” His thumb brushed a tear from my cheek. “And because I knew what your diagnosis did to you.”
I froze. Adrian’s expression suddenly changed. “The doctor who told you that you were infertile,” he said. “Was his name Dr. Michael Lewis?”
“Yes.”
His eyes went cold. “He’s Ethan Blake’s uncle.”
Every bit of warmth left my body. Adrian told me Ethan’s mother had arranged the false diagnosis because she wanted her son to leave me—and Ethan had known. For three years, I had believed my body was broken because they wanted me gone.
One week later, while Adrian treated me like the most precious person in his heavily guarded mansion, my phone rang from an unknown number. The voice on the other end made my blood run cold.
“Well, Emily,” Ethan’s mother sneered. “I hear you’re pregnant.”
My fingers tightened around the phone. “So tell me… how exactly did an infertile woman suddenly end up pregnant with a mafia boss’s twins?”
The words hung in the air, dripping with venom and malicious curiosity. For a terrifying second, my breath caught in my throat. I stood alone in the sunlit corridor of Adrian’s sprawling estate, the heavy security detail stationed outside the double doors offering me no comfort against the ghost of my past.
“You’re barking up the wrong tree, Mrs. Blake,” I managed to say, forcing my voice to remain steady. “Or perhaps you should ask your brother-in-law, Dr. Michael Lewis, why he falsified medical records three years ago.”
A sharp intake of breath echoed through the receiver. The arrogant sneer vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, frantic defensive panic. “What are you talking about? Michael is an esteemed physician—!”
“He’s a fraud who took a bribe from a desperate socialite trying to rid her son of a penniless fiancée,” I interrupted, my tone hardening into pure steel. “And the man I married isn’t just some ordinary businessman, Mrs. Blake. He owns half the commercial real estate and shipping ports in this state. If I were you, I’d worry less about my medical history and more about whether your family will still have a fortune left by Monday morning.”
I ended the call, cutting her off mid-sentence, and tossed the phone onto the velvet sofa. My hands were shaking, not from fear, but from a long-suppressed fury that had finally broken free. For three years, I had believed I was damaged goods. For three years, I had blamed my own body for failing me, weeping in quiet apartments while Ethan and his mother lived in luxury, laughing at how easily they had discarded me.
Little did they know, the net was about to drop.
That evening, when Adrian returned home, his dark overcoat dusted with the chill of a Chicago winter, he found me standing by the grand bay window looking out over the private gardens. He dropped his briefcase, crossed the room in three long strides, and wrapped his arms around my waist, pressing his face into the crook of my neck.
“You’re shaking,” he murmured, his voice laced with instant tension. “What happened? Did someone threaten you?”
I turned in his embrace, looking up into his intense, slate-grey eyes. “Ethan’s mother called.”
The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. Adrian’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek. “What did she say?”
“She wanted to know how an infertile woman managed to get pregnant with a mafia boss’s twins.” A faint, bitter smile touched my lips. “She still thinks she holds all the cards. She still thinks she can intimidate me.”
Adrian reached out, cupping my cheek with his warm, calloused palm. His thumb brushed over my skin with fierce tenderness, but his eyes burned with the lethal focus of an apex predator. “She forgot who you belong to, Emily. And she forgot who I am.”

“What are you going to do?” I asked.
“What I should have done the day I met you,” Adrian replied softly. “I’m going to teach the Blake family what happens when they mess with my wife.”
