Chapter 3 - The Breach in the NICU and the Blood Debt Called DueThe electronic monitor beside the incubator let out a sharp, high-pitched chirp as the ambient noise in the hallway spiked. Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed rapidly against the linoleum tile outside Isolation Unit 4—not the soft, measured tread of hospital staff, but the heavy, deliberate boots of tactical operatives moving with military precision.

Domenico’s head whipped toward the door. In a fraction of a second, the grief and guilt that had paralyzed him vanished, instantly replaced by the cold, lethal instincts of a syndicate king whose domain had been violated.

"Matteo," Domenico commanded, his voice dropping an octave into absolute, chilling authority. "How many?"

"At least six," Matteo said, pulling a heavy-calibre Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster and thumbing off the safety with a sharp click. "They bypassed the ground-floor security desk using forged credentials. They're clearing the third-floor east wing room by room. They're looking for Sophia."

Sophia instantly stepped back toward the incubator, her body positioning itself like a shield between the doorway and the fragile glass box holding her daughter. Her eyes flared with a desperate, feral maternal terror. "Domenico, no. Not here. If there's a shootout in this unit—"

"There won't be a shootout in this unit," Domenico interrupted, his gaze fixed on the reinforced glass door. He shrugged off his heavy, rain-soaked overcoat, letting it pool on the floor, revealing the tailored vest beneath and the custom-weighted Beretta tucked smoothly into his holster. "Because we aren't going to wait for them to breach this room."

He turned to Clara, who had rushed back into the room, her face white with panic as she clutched a medical emergency tablet to her chest.

"Nurse Hayes," Domenico said quickly, his tone commanding absolute compliance. "Is there a secure service elevator at the end of this corridor that bypasses the main lobby?"

"Yes," Clara nodded rapidly, pointing toward the back utility hallway. "It leads directly to the subterranean ambulance bay. But the keycard—"

"Matteo," Domenico snapped.

Matteo tossed a heavy master override keycard he had swiped from a security station downstairs across the room. Clara caught it deftly.

"Take Sophia and the baby's mobile incubator unit down to the basement immediately," Domenico ordered, stepping directly into Sophia's path as she tried to protest. "Listen to me, Sophia. Look at me."

Sophia’s dark eyes locked onto his, brimming with fierce resistance. "I am not leaving you here to die, Domenico. We walked away from this life once—"

"You are not leaving with me, you are leaving to keep our daughter safe," Domenico interrupted, his hands gripping her shoulders firmly. He leaned down, pressing his forehead hard against hers for a brief, burning second. "I built this empire on blood and iron, and for four months I let my own arrogance nearly destroy the only things that ever mattered to me. Let me fix this. Let me burn down the last of my sins so you and our daughter can finally walk out into the light."

Before she could speak another word, the heavy glass door of the isolation unit rattled violently as a heavy combat boot slammed against the reinforced frame. The electronic lock sparked, flashing red.

"They're at the door!" Matteo hissed, raising his weapon and taking a tactical position beside the doorframe.

"Go!" Domenico roared, shoving Sophia gently toward the back utility exit where Clara was already unlocking the secure service elevator with frantic hands.

Sophia cast one agonizing look back at him, her lips trembling as she helped wheel the life-support unit into the corridor, before the heavy steel doors slid shut, sealing them inside.

Domenico turned back to face the entrance. He drew his Beretta, racked the slide with a crisp, lethal snap, and stood squarely in the center of the room, waiting for the glass to shatter.
