Chapter 4 - The Firefight in the Halls of MercyThe glass didn't just shatter; it exploded inward in a glittering cascade of jagged shards as a heavy tactical breaching charge blew the door completely off its hinges.

A wall of white smoke and blinding flash-bang light flooded the isolation room. The concussive blast rattled the medical equipment, but Domenico stood firm, his eyes narrowed through the acrid haze.

Two operatives in black tactical gear and Kevlar vests surged through the ruined entryway, their submachine guns raised, sweeping the room.

Domenico didn't hesitate. He fired twice with calculated, terrifying precision.

Bang. Bang.

The first operative took a round directly to the ceramic plate of his vest, dropping him instantly to his knees gasping for air, while the second took a clean hit to the shoulder, spinning violently into the drywall before crashing to the floor.

"Clear!" Matteo yelled from the adjacent corner, firing a suppressing burst down the hallway to keep reinforcements from pouring in. "Boss, they've got elevators locked down on the north side! We have to move!"

"We're not running, Matteo," Domenico said coldly, stepping over the groaning operative on the floor and sweeping out into the main NICU corridor. "We're ending this."

The third-floor hallway looked like a war zone. Medical charts were scattered across the floor, emergency alarms wailed with a deafening, rhythmic strobe light, and terrified nurses had locked themselves inside the central nursing station. At the far end of the corridor, three more armed operatives were advancing methodically, their weapons leveled.

At the head of them stood Victor Rossi Jr.—the venomous remnant of the rival syndicate Domenico thought he had crushed years ago.

"Domenico!" Rossi shouted over the screaming alarms, a maniacal grin twisting his scarred face as he raised a silenced pistol. "Four months I've been hunting your little family! Where is your wife? Where is the heir to the Rossi-Rossi bloodline? Let's see how much your empire is worth when you're burying your entire bloodline in a single grave!"

Domenico walked forward slowly, completely exposed in the middle of the hallway, his Beretta held steady in a two-handed combat grip. Every step he took felt like a cleansing fire.

"You want my bloodline, Victor?" Domenico’s voice echoed coldly through the smoke-filled corridor, cutting through the alarms with terrifying clarity. "You should have checked who owned the hospital."

Before Rossi could pull the trigger, a heavy metallic clang echoed from the ceiling above.

Two of Domenico’s elite loyalists—operatives who had remained secretly stationed outside the building—dropped silently through the suspended acoustic ceiling tiles right behind Rossi’s tactical squad, their weapons instantly pressed against the backs of the mercenaries' necks.

"Drop your weapons. Now," Matteo barked, stepping out from a side corridor with his Sig Sauer locked dead on Rossi's chest.

Rossi froze, his eyes widening in sudden, panicked disbelief as he realized the trap had just snapped shut on him. He slowly lowered his pistol, looking frantically around the hallway for an escape route that no longer existed.

"You're dead, Domenico," Rossi spat, blood trickling from his lip. "Even if you kill me, my men have already found the service elevator. They're tracking your wife right now."

Domenico didn't blink. He closed the remaining distance between them in three long strides, raised the heavy steel-plated grip of his Beretta, and brought it down hard across Rossi's face with bone-crushing force.

Rossi collapsed heavily onto the linoleum floor, unconscious and bleeding profusely.

"Matteo," Domenico commanded, not even looking down at the broken man. "Secure him. And get me the status of the subterranean bay."

A crackle came through Matteo’s radio. Clara’s voice broke through the static, breathless but steady.

“Mr. Rossi... they’re safe. We’ve reached the armored transport. The baby’s vitals are stable.”

Domenico closed his eyes for a single second, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the weight of the last four months finally lifted from his shoulders.
