Chapter 4 - The Cartel’s RetaliationThree days after our confrontation in the lobby bar, the fragile peace of my new life came crashing down in a hail of automatic gunfire.

It was 8:30 PM. I was working late in my high-rise corner office on the thirty-second floor of the Vanguard building, reviewing a complex international acquisition file. The rest of the office floor was dark and silent, save for the hum of the air conditioning units and the distant glow of Chicago traffic below.
Suddenly, the security alarms across the entire floor shrieked to life.
Claxon! Claxon! Claxon!
I jumped up from my desk, my heart hammering against my ribs. Before I could reach the office door to lock it, the heavy glass entryway of our suite shattered inward in a shower of deadly crystal shards.
Three masked men dressed in tactical black combat gear poured into the office corridor. They weren't corporate burglars; they carried suppressed submachine guns and moved with the ruthless, synchronized efficiency of professional cartel hitmen.
I froze, terror paralyzing my legs.
"The analyst! Get the Vanguard girl!" one of them barked in a harsh, guttural voice, spotting me through the glass partition of my office.
My mind raced. The Conti family—the rivals Dante had been warring against while protecting Isabella—had traced my old connection to the Romano estate. They didn't know I had left him; they believed I was still Dante’s secret weakness, the ultimate leverage to force him into surrendering his Chicago shipping docks.
I bolted toward the emergency stairwell door at the back of my office, twisting the heavy metal bar with all my might.
Locked. Vanguard security protocols automatically sealed the stairwells during building breaches.
Heavy boots thudded down the hallway. The barrel of a suppressed submachine gun poked through my shattered office door frame.
"Found you," the lead gunman snarled, stepping into the room and grabbing me roughly by the arm, spinning me around and pressing the cold steel barrel directly against my temple.
"Don't move, or your brains paint this nice expensive window," he hissed.
My breath caught in my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut, flashing back to the library fireplace six months ago. I had fought so hard to crawl out of the underworld, to build a clean, respectable life, only to be dragged back down into a syndicate war I never asked to join.
Then, the opposite window overlooking the downtown alleyway exploded inward with a deafening roar.
Glass shattered into a million glittering pieces. A dark, agile figure swung through the window frame on a rappelling rope from the roof above, hitting the carpeted floor in a silent, tactical roll.
Before the cartel gunman could even register the movement, a heavy, silenced pistol fired twice.
Thip! Thip!
The gunman holding me collapsed instantly, his grip loosening as he slumped unconscious against my desk.
Standing before me, holding a smoking black Glock, was Dante Romano.
He wore a tactical bulletproof vest over a black tactical shirt, his dark hair damp with rain, his face smeared with soot and adrenaline. He looked like a dark angel of vengeance straight out of a nightmare.
"Dante..." I whispered, shaking violently.
"Get behind me, Sophia," he ordered, his voice terrifyingly calm as he pivoted toward the remaining two hitmen rushing down the hallway.
What followed was thirty seconds of absolute, controlled violence. Dante moved with lethal grace, clearing the corridor with calculated precision while taking cover behind the reinforced concrete pillars of the office floor. Within a minute, the two cartel operatives were neutralized, lying motionless on the corporate carpet.
Dante lowered his gun, his chest heaving as he turned back around to face me. His dark eyes scanned my body frantically, checking for blood or injuries.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, grabbing my shoulders.
"No," I gasped, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "No, I'm okay... Dante, how did you—?"
"I never stopped watching you," he confessed, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "After you walked out that door six months ago, I put a dedicated security detail on your apartment building. When my intelligence intercepted Conti chatter about targeting you to get to me, I was already on my way."
I stared up at him, the walls I had spent half a year building suddenly crumbling into dust. He had kept me safe, even when I hated him, even when I told him to stay away.
"They targeted me because of you," I whispered, bitterness creeping into my voice. "Because of your world."
"I know," Dante said, his voice dropping into a quiet, devastating plea. "And that's why I'm giving you a choice, Sophia. Come back with me tonight—not as my employee, not as someone I take for granted. Come back as my equal. Let me finish this war once and for all, so you never have to look over your shoulder again."

I looked down at the unconscious hitmen on the floor, then up into the dark, fierce eyes of the man who ruled half the city yet looked entirely helpless before me.
"Let's finish it," I said.
