Chapter 5 - The Final Empire (The End)Forty-eight hours later, the Conti family syndicate was no longer a threat.

Dante didn't just fight back; he dismantled their entire criminal infrastructure in a single, coordinated sweep across Chicago’s shipping ports and financial hubs. Backed by federal intelligence that he anonymously funneled through Vanguard’s legal auditing teams—led by none other than me—the entire leadership of the Conti syndicate was rounded up by federal marshals before dawn.
Isabella Conti was arrested at O'Hare airport trying to board a one-way flight to Zurich with her brother's hidden offshore accounts.
And inside the grand penthouse office of the Romano estate—the very room where I used to leave fresh towels and sweep up broken glass—everything had changed.
The heavy mahogany desk no longer belonged solely to Dante. Sitting right beside his leather chair was a second, matching executive desk draped in financial charts, legal contracts, and corporate restructuring plans for the newly legitimate Romano-Bennett Global Logistics corporation.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a cream-colored silk blouse and dark trousers, looking out over the glittering Chicago skyline as the morning sun broke through the clouds.
Footsteps approached softly behind me. Strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me backward against a solid, warm chest.
"You've been staring at that skyline for twenty minutes," Dante murmured into my hair, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of my neck.
"I'm just making sure it's real," I smiled, leaning back against him and resting my hands over his arms. "Six months ago, I walked out of this house with a single suitcase and forty dollars in my pocket. Now I'm your primary corporate partner."
"You were always my equal, Sophia," Dante confessed, his voice dropping into a soft, fierce sincerity. "I was just too arrogant, too blind, and too trapped in my own world to realize it until you slammed the door in my face."
"You deserved it," I teased gently, turning around in his arms to look up into his face.
"I did," he admitted without hesitation. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it slowly. Resting inside on black satin was not a syndicate token or a piece of flashy cartel jewelry, but a stunning, elegant platinum diamond ring—clean, classic, and entirely unburdened by secrets.
"No keys on pillows. No rooms given away," Dante promised, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unwavering devotion. "Just my heart, my empire, and my entire life, if you'll take them."
I looked down at the ring, then up into the eyes of the most feared mafia boss in the city—a man who had burned down an empire just to keep me safe.

"Merger accepted," I whispered.
He pulled me close, sealing our future with a long, breathtaking kiss as the city hummed brightly beneath our feet, completely safe, completely free, and entirely our own.
