Chapter 3 - THE MAFIA BOSS FINALLY ADMITTED HE WAS FALLING FOR HIS MAID—BUT HIS BEST FRIEND DISCOVERED THE MAN BLACKMAILING HER WAS SOMEONE LUCA HAD TRUSTED SINCE CHILDHOOD

The first thing Emily noticed the next morning was the silence.

Not the usual silence of the Conti estate.

That silence was expensive.

Controlled.

Filled with people who knew when to disappear.

This was different.

The guards were speaking quietly into radios.

Two unfamiliar cars sat outside the gates.

Mrs. Russo had stopped pretending everything was normal.

Emily stood near the kitchen window, holding a cup of tea.

"What's happening?"

Mrs. Russo looked at her.

"Mr. Conti has called a meeting."

"About Victor?"

The older woman nodded.

Emily swallowed.

"Is my family safe?"

"For now, yes."

The answer did not comfort her.

For now.

She was beginning to hate those words.

Upstairs, Luca sat at the head of the conference table.

Ryan stood beside him.

Vincent had brought the security records.

Three suspicious shipments.

Two missing accountants.

One compromised security code.

And a series of payments routed through a company called Eastbridge Holdings.

Luca studied the documents.

"Who owns Eastbridge?"

Vincent hesitated.

"That's the problem."

Ryan looked up.

"What problem?"

"The ownership records lead through several shell companies."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Keep going."

Vincent placed another document on the table.

"The final beneficiary appears to be a trust."

Luca leaned forward.

"Whose trust?"

Vincent swallowed.

"The Conti Family Trust."

Silence.

Ryan stared.

Luca did not move.

The trust had been established by Luca's father.

Only three people had access.

Luca.

His attorney.

And his uncle, Antonio Conti.

Antonio had helped raise Luca after his mother's death.

He had taught him how to negotiate.

How to recognize betrayal.

How to survive.

Luca stared at the document.

"No."

Ryan looked at him.

"Luca."

"No."

Vincent continued carefully.

"The authorization signature belongs to Antonio."

Luca stood.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.

His uncle.

The man who had taught him loyalty.

The man who had stood beside his mother's coffin.

The man who had told Luca that family was the only thing that mattered.

Ryan stepped closer.

"Sit down."

Luca looked at him.

Ryan's voice softened.

"Don't make decisions while you're angry."

Luca stared.

Then slowly sat.

For fifteen years, he had believed that betrayal came from outside.

Now it had reached into his home.

And touched the one person he had only just begun to care about.

Emily was polishing silver in the dining room when Ryan found her.

He looked unusually serious.

"Emily."

She turned.

"Ryan."

He smiled faintly.

"Can we talk?"

She nodded.

"Of course."

They stepped into the conservatory.

Sunlight filtered through the glass ceiling.

Ryan leaned against the wall.

"I owe you an apology."

Emily frowned.

"For what?"

"For making jokes in Luca's office."

She blinked.

"Why?"

Ryan looked down.

"Because I didn't realize how much attention it would bring you."

Emily studied him.

"You weren't doing anything wrong."

Ryan smiled sadly.

"Maybe not. But Luca doesn't handle feelings very well."

She laughed softly.

"I noticed."

Ryan smiled.

Then became serious.

"He's not a bad man, Emily."

She looked away.

"I know."

Ryan studied her.

"But he's spent years believing that caring about someone makes him weak."

Emily nodded.

"That's sad."

Ryan looked at her.

"Yes."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Ryan said:

"He's trying."

Emily smiled faintly.

"I can see that."

Ryan nodded.

"Good."

Then he hesitated.

"Can I ask you something?"

Emily looked up.

"Sure."

"Do you like him?"

Her cheeks flushed.

"Ryan."

He grinned.

"That's not a no."

She looked away.

"I don't know."

Ryan's smile softened.

"Fair enough."

Then he added:

"Just make sure he earns your trust."

Emily looked at him.

"Why are you telling me this?"

Ryan shrugged.

"Because you're a good person."

He paused.

"And because he's my brother in every way that matters."

***

That evening, Luca found Emily in the garden.

She sat on a stone bench near the roses.

The sun was setting.

The air smelled of wet earth.

He stopped a few feet away.

"May I?"

Emily looked up.

Then smiled.

"You keep asking permission to sit in your own house."

Luca smiled faintly.

"Maybe I'm learning."

She laughed.

He sat beside her.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Emily asked:

"How was your day?"

Luca looked toward the garden.

"Complicated."

She nodded.

"Mine too."

He glanced at her.

"Why?"

She smiled sadly.

"Because I keep wondering whether I should leave."

Luca's chest tightened.

He looked at her.

"Do you want to?"

Emily hesitated.

"I don't know."

He nodded.

"If you do, I'll help you find somewhere safe."

She studied him.

"You'd let me go?"

Luca looked at her.

"Emily, you aren't a prisoner."

Her expression softened.

He continued.

"I don't want you staying because you're afraid."

She looked down.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Emily whispered:

"What if I stay because I want to?"

Luca's breath caught.

He looked at her.

She met his eyes.

For one heartbeat, the world seemed to stop.

Then Luca said quietly:

"I'd like that."

Emily smiled.

He looked down.

There were a thousand things he wanted to say.

That he thought about her laughter.

That he noticed when she entered a room.

That he had started drinking coffee just to have an excuse to see her.

That he was terrified of wanting something he could not control.

Instead, he said:

"Emily."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

His voice was rough.

"I'm not good at this."

She smiled faintly.

"At what?"

He swallowed.

"Caring about someone."

Emily's eyes softened.

He continued.

"I don't know how to do it without trying to protect them from everything."

She looked at him.

"Then start by trusting them."

Luca nodded slowly.

"I can try."

She smiled.

"Good."

He reached toward her hand.

Then paused.

Emily noticed.

She moved her hand closer.

Their fingers touched.

Luca looked at her.

She smiled.

And for the first time in fifteen years, Luca Conti allowed himself to want something without immediately trying to possess it.

***

The moment ended when Ryan appeared at the garden entrance.

"Luca."

Something in his voice made Luca stand.

"What?"

Ryan looked at Emily.

Then back at Luca.

"We found Antonio."

Luca's expression hardened.

"Where?"

"At the old family house."

Luca nodded.

"Let's go."

Emily stood.

"Wait."

He turned.

She looked at him.

"Be careful."

The words were simple.

But Luca felt them deeply.

He nodded.

"I will."

Then he left.

***

Antonio Conti sat in the library of the old family estate.

He was sixty-three.

Silver-haired.

Elegant.

The kind of man who looked like he belonged in a museum portrait.

Luca entered with Ryan.

Antonio smiled.

"My boy."

Luca did not return the smile.

"Uncle."

Antonio studied him.

"Something wrong?"

Luca placed the financial records on the table.

Antonio glanced at them.

Then looked up.

"Ah."

Luca's chest tightened.

"Explain."

Antonio sighed.

"You've become sentimental."

Luca stared.

"What?"

Antonio leaned back.

"A maid, Luca? Really?"

Ryan stiffened.

Luca went still.

Antonio continued.

"Your father would be disappointed."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Don't mention my father."

Antonio smiled.

"Then stop behaving like a lovesick boy."

Luca stepped forward.

Ryan placed a hand on his arm.

Antonio watched with amusement.

"See? One girl and you've forgotten how to think."

Luca stared.

Then spoke quietly.

"You threatened her brother."

Antonio shrugged.

"Necessary pressure."

Luca's face changed.

"Necessary?"

Antonio sighed.

"She was supposed to leave. You were supposed to remain focused."

Luca stared.

"Why?"

Antonio smiled.

"Because the family is being reorganized."

Ryan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Antonio looked at Luca.

"It means your time is ending."

Silence.

Then Antonio continued.

"You've grown weak. Too interested in legitimate businesses. Too willing to negotiate. Too concerned with public image."

Luca stared.

Antonio smiled coldly.

"Your father built an empire. You're turning it into a corporation."

Luca looked at him.

"And you want it back."

Antonio nodded.

"Someone has to protect the family."

Luca took a breath.

"By stealing from it?"

Antonio's expression hardened.

"By preserving it."

Ryan stepped forward.

"You used Victor. You threatened Emily. You diverted shipments."

Antonio smiled.

"Yes."

Luca closed his eyes.

The truth hurt more than he expected.

His uncle.

His family.

His history.

All of it had been used against him.

Then Antonio spoke again.

"There's something else you should know."

Luca opened his eyes.

Antonio smiled.

"The girl isn't who you think she is."

Luca went still.

"What?"

Antonio reached into his desk.

He removed a folder.

Placed it on the table.

Emily Carter.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Employment history.

And one document that made Luca's blood turn cold.

A witness statement.

Signed by Emily's father.

Dated sixteen years earlier.

The statement concerned the car bombing that killed Luca's mother.

Antonio leaned forward.

"Her father helped the people who murdered your mother."

Luca stared at the paper.

May you like

The room seemed to disappear.

And suddenly the woman who had taught him how to trust was connected to the worst day of his life.
