Chapter 4 - THE MAFIA BOSS ACCUSED HIS MAID OF HIDING THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS MOTHER'S DEATH—BUT WHEN HIS CAPO UNCOVERED THE REAL TRAITOR, LUCA HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN REVENGE AND THE WOMAN HE LOVED

Luca Conti did not remember leaving his uncle's house.
He remembered the folder.
The signature.
The date.
The name.
Daniel Carter.
Emily's father.
The man whose death she had described with such quiet sadness.
The man whose photograph she kept beside her bed.
The man whose daughter had somehow walked into Luca's life sixteen years after his mother was murdered.
Luca sat in the back of the car, staring at the documents.
Ryan watched him.
"Luca."
He did not answer.
Ryan tried again.
"Don't do anything stupid."
Luca looked up.
"Her father signed the statement."
Ryan nodded.
"Maybe."
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean, maybe?"
Ryan leaned forward.
"Antonio gave you the document."
Luca stared.
Ryan continued.
"The same Antonio who admitted threatening Emily's family."
Silence.
Luca looked down at the paper.
Ryan's voice softened.
"Don't let him use your grief against you."
Luca closed his eyes.
He wanted to believe Ryan.
But grief had a way of making old wounds feel new.
***
Emily was waiting in the library when Luca returned.
She stood as he entered.
"Luca."
He stopped.
She smiled faintly.
"Are you okay?"
He stared at her.
For a moment, he saw the woman in the garden.
The laughter.
The warmth.
The hand reaching toward his.
Then he remembered the folder.
"Your father," he said.
Emily frowned.
"What about him?"
Luca held up the document.
"Did he ever work for the Conti family?"
Emily went still.
She looked at the paper.
Then at Luca.
"Why?"
"Answer me."
Her expression changed.
The softness disappeared.
"Yes."
Luca's chest tightened.
"What did he do?"
"He was a driver."
Luca stared.
"For whom?"
Emily swallowed.
"Your father."
Silence.
Luca felt the floor shift beneath him.
"You knew?"
Emily's eyes filled.
"I knew he worked for your family."
"And you didn't tell me?"
She looked down.
"I was afraid."
Luca laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
Emily looked up.
"What does that mean?"
He placed the document on the table.
She read it.
Her face went pale.
Then she looked at him.
"No."
Luca stared.
She shook her head.
"No. That's not true."
"Your father's signature is on it."
Emily's eyes filled.
"My father didn't help kill your mother."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"Then explain it."
She looked at him.
"I can't."
He stared.
Emily continued.
"I don't know what happened."
Luca turned away.
She stepped closer.
"Luca, please."
He stopped.
She whispered:
"Don't look at me like that."
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he wanted to pull her into his arms.
Tell her he believed her.
Tell her nothing had changed.
But the old fear rose.
The fear that loving someone meant giving them the power to destroy him.
He turned.
"I need time."
Emily stared.
Then nodded slowly.
"Okay."
Her voice broke.
"Take all the time you need."
She walked past him.
Luca did not stop her.
And when the door closed, he realized he had just done the one thing he had promised himself he would never do.
He had punished someone for a crime he had not proved.
***
Emily packed that night.
Not because she was guilty.
Not because she was afraid of Luca.
But because she refused to remain in a house where she was being judged by a dead man's secrets.
Mrs. Russo found her folding clothes.
"Emily."
She looked up.
"I'm leaving."
The older woman nodded sadly.
"I know."
Emily swallowed.
"I didn't do anything wrong."
Mrs. Russo sat beside her.
"I believe you."
Tears filled Emily's eyes.
She began crying.
Mrs. Russo pulled her into her arms.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then the older woman whispered:
"Your father was a good man."
Emily froze.
She looked up.
"What?"
Mrs. Russo hesitated.
Then sighed.
"I knew him."
Emily stared.
"You knew my father?"
Mrs. Russo nodded.
"He worked here years ago."
Emily's breath caught.
"Then you know what happened?"
Mrs. Russo looked toward the door.
Her expression changed.
"Not everything."
Emily leaned forward.
"Please."
Mrs. Russo swallowed.
"Your father tried to warn Luca's mother."
Emily froze.
"What?"
The older woman nodded.
"He knew someone had tampered with the car."
Emily covered her mouth.
Mrs. Russo continued.
"He tried to stop her from leaving."
Tears filled her eyes.
"But the message never reached her."
Emily stared.
"Why?"
Mrs. Russo looked down.
"Because someone intercepted it."
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"Antonio."
***
Ryan found the truth forty minutes later.
The witness statement had been altered.
The signature was genuine.
But the text above it had been replaced.
Daniel Carter had not confessed to helping the killers.
He had identified the person who ordered the bombing.
Antonio Conti.
Luca stared at the forensic report.
His hands trembled.
Ryan stood beside him.
"Your uncle killed your mother."
Luca closed his eyes.
The words seemed impossible.
Antonio.
The man who had held him at the funeral.
The man who had taught him how to survive.
The man who had spent sixteen years using grief to control him.
Luca opened his eyes.
"Where's Emily?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Packing."
Luca stood.
He ran.
***
Emily had reached the front door when Luca appeared.
"Emily."
She stopped.
He looked breathless.
For the first time, she saw him without the mask.
Not the mafia boss.
Not the man who controlled rooms with silence.
Just a man who had made a terrible mistake.
"Please," he said.
Emily turned.
"What?"
He swallowed.
"I was wrong."
She stared.
He stepped closer.
"My uncle forged the document."
Her eyes filled.
Luca continued.
"Your father tried to save my mother."
Emily covered her mouth.
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
Luca's voice broke.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Emily whispered:
"You didn't trust me."
Luca nodded.
"I know."
She looked down.
"You looked at me like I was dangerous."
He swallowed.
"I know."
She shook her head.
"I can't live like that."
Luca's face crumpled.
"I understand."
Emily looked up.
He continued.
"I love you."
She froze.
The words hung between them.
Luca swallowed.
"I should have said it before. I should have trusted you. I should have listened."
Emily began crying.
He stepped closer.
"But I don't want you to stay because I love you."
She stared.
He continued.
"I want you to stay only if you want to."
Emily looked down.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"I need time."
Luca nodded.
"Take it."
She looked at him.
He continued.
"I'll make sure you and your family are safe while the investigation continues. You can choose where you stay."
Emily nodded.
"Thank you."
Then she walked out.
Luca stood in the doorway watching her leave.
For the first time in his life, he understood that love could not be commanded.
It could only be earned.
***
Two days later, Antonio Conti was arrested.
The investigation exposed decades of financial crimes, corruption, and the conspiracy surrounding Luca's mother's death.
Daniel Carter's original witness statement was recovered.
It proved he had attempted to warn her.
It also revealed that he had spent years living under threat because of what he knew.
Emily read the statement with tears streaming down her face.
Her father had not been a traitor.
He had been brave.
And the truth had finally returned his dignity.
Luca cooperated with investigators.
He surrendered records.
He accepted scrutiny of his businesses.
He removed the people who had helped Antonio.
And he began dismantling the criminal operations that had defined his family's power.
The process was difficult.
Painful.
Public.
But necessary.
For the first time, Luca Conti chose a future that did not depend on fear.
***
Three months later, Emily returned to the estate.
Not as a maid.
Not as an employee.
But as a guest.
Mrs. Russo greeted her with tears.
Magda made her favorite dinner.
Tomas brought flowers from the garden.
Ryan grinned when he saw her.
"Well, look who's back."
Emily laughed.
"Hello, Ryan."
He smiled.
"Still not scared of the boss?"
Emily looked toward the library.
"No."
Ryan nodded.
"Good."
Then he leaned closer.
"He's been miserable without you."
Emily smiled faintly.
"I know."
Ryan laughed.
"Then put him out of his misery."
Emily shook her head.
"Ryan."
He raised both hands.
"Just saying."
***
Luca stood in the library.
The same room where they had first spoken honestly.
He turned when Emily entered.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then he smiled.
"Emily."
She smiled back.
"Luca."
He swallowed.
"How's Noah?"
"Walking without crutches."
Luca's face softened.
"That's wonderful."
She nodded.
"He's applying to college."
Luca smiled.
"Good for him."
Silence settled.
Then Emily stepped closer.
"I've been thinking."
Luca nodded.
"About?"
"Us."
His breath caught.
She looked at him.
"I love you."
Luca froze.
Emily smiled sadly.
"But I need to know that loving you won't mean losing myself."
He nodded.
"It won't."
She studied him.
He continued.
"I can't promise I'll never make mistakes."
Emily nodded.
"I know."
"But I can promise I'll listen. I'll tell the truth. And I'll never ask you to sacrifice your freedom to prove you love me."
Tears filled her eyes.
She smiled.
"That's all I wanted."
Luca stepped closer.
"May I kiss you?"
Emily laughed through tears.
"Yes."
He kissed her gently.
Not like a man claiming something.
May you like
Like a man finally grateful to be chosen.
And for the first time, Luca Conti understood that the greatest victory of his life had nothing to do with power.
