Chapter 2 - HE SEARCHED EVERY CITY FOR HIS WIFE AND NEWBORN SON—UNTIL HER LAWYER TOLD THE MAFIA BOSS THE ONE PLACE HE WAS NEVER ALLOWED TO LOOK

Lucian did not sleep that night.
At 4:17 in the morning, he stood inside the room that should have contained his son.
The crib was empty.
A mobile of blue stars rotated slowly above it.
Serena had left almost everything.
Baby clothes.
Diapers.
The expensive stroller Lucian's mother had sent from Italy.
She had taken only what Nico needed.
That detail hurt.
She had not left impulsively.
She had planned survival.
Lucian opened the nursery closet.
One of Serena's cardigans hung behind the door.
He touched the sleeve.
Seven years earlier, she had owned three winter coats and refused to buy another because they were saving for their first warehouse.
Now she had access to millions.
And had fled in a borrowed minivan.
His phone rang.
Rafe Bellini, head of Moretti security.
“We located Danny's apartment.”
“And?”
“Empty.”
“Family?”
“Wife left him two years ago. No children.”
“Accounts?”
“Most cleaned out.”
“How much?”
“Eight million accessible. Maybe more offshore.”
Lucian stared through the window.
“Find Bianca.”
A pause.
“We already did.”
“Where?”
“JFK.”
Lucian turned.
“Leaving?”
“Trying.”
“Stop her.”
Twenty-eight minutes later Bianca sat in a private security room beneath a Moretti warehouse in Queens.
Lucian entered alone.
She looked different without the white Palm Beach clothes.
Smaller.
Frightened.
“You can't keep me here.”
“I don't intend to.”
She looked surprised.
“Then why—”
“Danny Caruso.”
Her face changed.
Lucian noticed.
“How much did he pay you?”
“Lucian—”
“How much?”
Bianca looked away.
“Fifty thousand.”
Lucian felt something inside him break in an almost ridiculous place.
Not because she had been paid.
Because he had believed she wanted him.
He had risked his marriage for vanity purchased at a price lower than one of his cars.
“What were you paid to do?”
“Meet you.”
“Three years ago?”
“Yes.”
“Sleep with me?”
She hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I didn't ask.”
“Later?”
“He paid me to keep you distracted.”
“From what?”
“Serena.”
Lucian became still.
“Why Serena?”
“I don't know.”
He stepped closer.
Bianca recoiled.
Lucian stopped himself.
“Did Danny tell you to keep me in Florida when Serena went into labor?”
Tears appeared.
“Yes.”
Lucian closed his eyes.
The shame was almost physically nauseating.
Danny had manipulated him.
But Danny had not forced him.
That distinction mattered.
“You could miss the birth either way.”
Danny had supplied permission.
Lucian had chosen to use it.
“Did you know she was in labor?”
Bianca whispered:
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“Danny told me not to.”
Lucian looked at her.
“Why didn't you?”
“Because I needed the money.”
There were a thousand cruel things he could have said.
He said none.
“Rafe will take you to federal investigators.”
Her head snapped up.
“Federal?”
“You're going to tell them everything.”
“And if I don't?”
Lucian paused.
Old Lucian would have threatened.
New Lucian did something much harder.
“Then you'll have an attorney and make your own choice.”
Bianca stared at him.
He left.
Outside, Marco waited.
“That was surprisingly civilized.”
“Don't start.”
Marco followed him.
“Marcus Chen called.”
Lucian stopped.
“Serena?”
“She agreed to let you receive a video.”
“Live?”
“No.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
Lucian hated that.
Then accepted it.
At eight, the video arrived.
Serena sat in an unfamiliar room.
Plain wall.
Cheap lamp.
Nico slept against her shoulder.
She looked exhausted.
Beautiful.
Unreachable.
“Lucian.”
His chest tightened.
“If you're watching this, Marcus has confirmed you agreed not to trace the file.”
He had.
“You probably think I'm punishing you.”
She paused.
“I'm not.”
“Nico isn't a weapon.”
“He isn't a lesson.”
“And I'm not disappearing because I want you to suffer.”
Lucian sat slowly.
“I left because I discovered Danny's transfers.”
“I didn't know whether you were involved.”
That hurt.
“I didn't know whether the affair was part of something larger.”
Worse.
“And after you missed the birth, then missed six o'clock because Danny called, I understood something.”
“You trust your organization more quickly than you trust me.”
Lucian closed his eyes.
“I needed to know whether you would choose us when nobody forced you.”
“You didn't.”
Serena looked down at Nico.
“So I'm asking for space.”
“Not forever.”
“Not necessarily.”
“But until I know that you can be his father without treating me like territory you lost.”
Lucian watched every second twice.
Then a third time.
He did not trace it.
That became his first act of love that Serena never saw.
The second came two days later.
Rafe discovered the location.
Not intentionally.
A pharmacy claim for Nico's newborn medication appeared in Burlington, Vermont.
The pharmacist had entered Serena's real insurance information before correcting it.
Rafe walked into Lucian's office.
“I know where she is.”
Lucian stood.
Every cell in his body reacted.
“Where?”
Rafe hesitated.
“Do you want the answer?”
Lucian understood the question.
If he heard it, he could not unknow it.
He imagined Serena in a small rented house.
Nico sleeping.
A car arriving.
Men stepping out.
Even if Lucian went alone, she would know he had violated the boundary.
He sat back down.
“No.”
Rafe stared.
“Boss?”
“Delete it.”
“What?”
“Delete the location.”
“Danny may find the same trail.”
Lucian's jaw tightened.
“Then warn Marcus that the pharmacy created exposure.”
“Without telling us where?”
“Yes.”
Rafe slowly nodded.
“That is either the smartest thing you've ever done or the stupidest.”
“Probably both.”
The information reached Serena.
Marcus called her.
“Lucian's people found a trace.”
Serena's stomach dropped.
“Is he coming?”
“No.”
“What?”
“He ordered them to delete the location.”
Serena sat beside Nico's bassinet.
“Why?”
“I assume because you asked him not to find you.”
She said nothing.
That night, for the first time since leaving New York, Serena slept longer than two hours.
But Danny was not as restrained.
Three days later, Elena noticed a black SUV near the grocery store.
It appeared again outside a pediatric clinic.
Serena called Marcus.
Within twenty minutes, local police arrived.
The SUV disappeared.
The following morning, an envelope lay on the porch.
No stamp.
Inside was a photograph of Nico.
Taken through the living-room window.
On the back:
YOUR HUSBAND CANNOT PROTECT WHAT HE CANNOT FIND.
Serena's hands shook.
She called Marcus.
Marcus called Lucian.
Lucian listened.
Then said:
“I'm coming.”
Marcus answered:
“No.”
“Danny has her.”
“Danny knows the general area.”
“Then I'm coming.”
“She will see that as—”
“I don't care how she sees me.”
Lucian stopped.
The sentence sounded like the old him.
He closed his eyes.
“Ask her.”
“What?”
“Ask Serena whether she wants me there.”
Ten minutes.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Then Marcus called back.
“She says yes.”
Lucian was on the plane within fifteen minutes.
He did not bring an army.
Marco.
Rafe.
Two federal agents coordinating the Danny investigation.
Nothing more.
When Serena saw Lucian for the first time in seventeen days, he stopped at the end of the driveway.
He did not approach.
Serena stood on the porch.
Nico was inside with Elena.
Lucian looked thinner.
Tired.
For the first time in years, Serena saw no bodyguard directly beside him.
He waited.
She realized he was waiting for permission.
“You can come up.”
Lucian walked toward her.
He stopped three feet away.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“Nico?”
“Fine.”
“Can I—”
He stopped.
Serena knew the unfinished question.
“Not yet.”
Pain crossed his face.
But he nodded.
“Okay.”
That one word did more than a hundred apologies.
Inside, Lucian saw his son.
Nico was seventeen days old.
He had changed already.
His face fuller.
Eyes more alert.
Lucian stared from across the room.
Serena finally said:
“You can hold him.”
Lucian looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
She placed Nico in his arms.
Lucian sat.
The feared head of the Moretti organization became terrified of moving.
Nico opened his eyes.
Lucian whispered:
“Hello.”
Serena looked away.
Lucian touched one tiny hand.
“I missed everything.”
Serena answered quietly.
“You missed seventeen days.”
“It feels like everything.”
“It isn't.”
He looked up.
That was not forgiveness.
But it was not hopelessness either.
Then Marco entered.
His face was hard.
“We found Danny.”
“Where?”
“Not Danny himself.”
“What?”
“His operation.”
Marco placed photographs on the table.
A warehouse.
Documents.
Weapons.
And an organizational chart.
At the top:
DANIEL CARUSO.
Below it were names Serena recognized.
Moretti accountants.
Port supervisors.
A police captain.
Two politicians.
Then Serena saw one name that made her stop breathing.
ELENA VALE.
She looked at her sister.
Elena went pale.
Lucian stood.
“What is this?”
Serena stared.
“Elena?”
Her sister whispered:
“I can explain.”
Lucian moved instinctively between Serena and Elena.
Serena touched his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“She is my sister.”
“Yes.”
“Move.”
He did.
Serena faced Elena.
“What did you do?”
Elena began crying.
“I helped Danny.”
Silence.
“For how long?”
“Four years.”
Serena stepped backward.
“You knew about Bianca.”
“Yes.”
“You knew?”
“I didn't know he hired her at first.”
“But later?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Danny had something on me.”
“What?”
Elena looked toward Lucian.
“Your husband.”
Lucian frowned.
“What about me?”
Elena wiped her face.
“Seven years ago, before Serena married you, I was working at Whitestone Financial.”
Lucian remembered the firm.
“One of your shell companies moved money through us.”
Serena looked at him.
Lucian did not deny it.
Elena continued.
“I copied records.”
“Why?” Serena asked.
“Because I thought Lucian was using you.”
Serena stared.
“I planned to give them to federal investigators.”
Lucian's expression hardened.
“Danny found out.”
“And blackmailed you,” Marco said.
Elena nodded.
“He said if I exposed him, he'd give Lucian proof I stole records.”
Lucian looked at her.
“You thought I'd kill you.”
Elena said nothing.
Again, silence answered.
Lucian looked toward Serena.
There it was.
His legacy.
Not what he believed he would do.
What people believed he could do.
Elena continued.
“Danny made me feed him information.”
“About me?” Serena whispered.
“Yes.”
“Pregnancy?”
“Yes.”
“Divorce?”
Tears ran down Elena's face.
“I tried to protect you.”
“You helped me disappear.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because that part wasn't for Danny.”
Elena stepped closer.
“He ordered me to keep you in Manhattan.”
Serena froze.
“Why?”
“Because you had found the transfers.”
“So you helped me escape against his orders?”
“Yes.”
“Then why is your name on this chart?”
“Because I was his source.”
Lucian asked:
“Does Danny know where we are?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
A gunshot shattered the window.
Lucian moved before the sound finished.
He knocked Serena to the floor.
Marco grabbed Nico's bassinet and pulled it behind an interior wall.
A second shot hit the doorframe.
Rafe shouted.
Federal agents returned fire.
Elena screamed.
Lucian covered Serena with his body.
She could feel his heart pounding.
Not fearless.
Terrified.
“Nico.”
“Marco has him.”
“My baby—”
“He has him.”
A car engine screamed outside.
Then silence.
Rafe entered seconds later.
“Shooter fled.”
“Danny?”
“Unknown.”
Serena pushed herself upright.
Lucian checked her face.
“Are you hit?”
“No.”
“Elena?”
Fine.
Nico began crying.
Serena ran to him.
Lucian remained kneeling on the floor.
He looked at the bullet buried in the wall.
Then at his family.
And made a decision.
“It's over.”
Marco frowned.
“What?”
“The organization.”
Rafe stared.
“Lucian.”
“I’m dismantling it.”
Serena looked at him.
“You can't do that overnight.”
“No.”
“But I can start tonight.”
Marco understood.
“Danny's power depends on the shadow network.”
“Yes.”
“If we expose everything—”
“We expose ourselves.”
Rafe went still.
Lucian nodded.
“All of it.”
Serena stared.
“You could go to prison.”
“Yes.”
“For years.”
“Yes.”
“What about Nico?”
Lucian looked at his son.
His face broke.
“That is exactly why.”
Serena said nothing.
Lucian continued.
“I missed his birth because I thought preserving my empire was protecting my family.”
He looked around at the shattered glass.
“I finally understand the empire is what put the bullet through the window.”
And for the first time since Nico was born, Serena believed Lucian might actually be changing.
May you like
Not because he said he loved her.
Because he was finally willing to lose something he loved more than control.
