Chapter 4 - SHE DIVORCED THE MAFIA BOSS WHILE HE WAS IN PRISON—TWO YEARS LATER HE CAME BACK WITHOUT AN EMPIRE AND ASKED FOR SOMETHING MONEY COULD NEVER FORCE HER TO GIVE

Lucian came home on a Tuesday.

No convoy waited.

No reporters knew.

Marco drove him from the federal facility in an ordinary black SUV.

“Where first?” Marco asked.

Lucian looked out the window.

He had once owned enough property in Manhattan to choose among six residences.

Most had been sold.

Restitution.

Legal settlements.

Employee trust.

Government forfeiture.

He still had money.

More than most people would earn in several lifetimes.

But the empire was gone.

“The apartment.”

“You don't want to see Nico?”

Lucian looked at him.

“Serena said four.”

It was 11:30.

Marco smiled.

“You've become painfully obedient.”

“I prefer alive.”

The apartment was in Brooklyn.

Two bedrooms.

No private elevator.

No marble.

Lucian loved it immediately.

At four, he arrived at Serena's house.

She had moved back to New York during his sentence.

Not the penthouse.

A brownstone in Brooklyn Heights.

Her own.

Purchased through money from the legitimate company shares she had helped build years earlier.

Lucian stood outside holding nothing.

No diamonds.

No flowers.

No toys.

Serena opened the door.

For several seconds, they stared.

She had cut her hair.

He had more gray.

“You're early.”

“Three minutes.”

“I noticed.”

Then a voice came from behind her.

“Daddy!”

Lucian stopped breathing.

Nico was two years and two months old.

He knew Lucian from weekly video calls.

Photographs.

Visits when allowed.

But this was different.

Nico ran.

Lucian dropped to his knees.

His son crashed into him.

Lucian held him.

Eyes closed.

Serena watched.

Something inside her hurt beautifully.

“Daddy home.”

“Yes.”

Lucian's voice broke.

“Daddy's home.”

For the next year, Lucian did not ask Serena to reconcile.

Not once.

He rented his apartment.

Worked as a consultant for the legitimate shipping company he once controlled.

Went to therapy.

Attended every pediatric appointment Serena invited him to.

Missed none.

When Nico had a fever at two in the morning, Lucian arrived with medicine.

When preschool held Father's Breakfast at 7:15, he arrived at 6:50.

When a port executive scheduled a meeting at the same time as Nico's first Christmas play, Lucian said:

“Reschedule.”

The executive replied:

“They're flying from London.”

Lucian looked at him.

“My son is playing a tree.”

The executive stared.

“A tree?”

“Third tree from the left.”

“You're missing a forty-million-dollar negotiation for a tree?”

“Yes.”

Lucian sat in the front row.

Nico forgot his one line.

Lucian applauded anyway.

Serena laughed until she cried.

Afterward, she found him outside.

“You missed a meeting?”

“Yes.”

“For that?”

“Nico was excellent.”

“He stood silently.”

“With authority.”

She laughed again.

Lucian watched her.

There it was.

The old feeling.

Different now.

No entitlement attached.

Just love.

He did not act on it.

Serena eventually did.

One night after Nico's fourth birthday, she invited Lucian inside after he dropped him home.

“Coffee?”

Lucian looked suspicious.

“What?”

“You've never invited me for coffee.”

“Do you want it?”

“Yes.”

They sat at the kitchen table.

Serena said:

“Are you dating?”

Lucian nearly choked.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Busy.”

“That's not an answer.”

He smiled.

“Someone taught me that.”

“Answer.”

Lucian looked at her.

“Because I'm still in love with my ex-wife.”

Serena's fingers tightened around her mug.

“Oh.”

“You asked.”

“I did.”

Silence.

“Are you dating?” he asked.

“I have.”

His face remained controlled.

“How many?”

She smiled.

“You don't get that information.”

“Fair.”

“Does that bother you?”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to do anything about it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because we're divorced.”

Serena looked at him for a long time.

“You really did learn.”

“Painfully.”

She smiled.

Then:

“Ask me to dinner.”

Lucian froze.

“What?”

“Dinner.”

“Serena.”

“If you don't want to—”

“I want to.”

“Then ask.”

He stared.

“Would you have dinner with me?”

“Yes.”

Their first date was terrible.

Both were too careful.

Lucian asked permission to order sparkling water.

Serena finally laughed.

“You're allowed to make decisions.”

“I’m calibrating.”

“You sound like software.”

The second date was better.

The third ended with a kiss.

Serena initiated it.

Lucian did not touch her until she took his hands and placed them around her waist.

They dated for eighteen months.

Slowly.

Nico knew.

“Mommy likes Daddy again.”

Serena nearly dropped a plate.

Lucian looked delighted.

“Do not encourage him.”

“I said nothing.”

“Your face did.”

Eventually Lucian proposed.

Not with a diamond.

With the old blue notebook.

Serena stared when he placed it on the table.

“The hospital notebook?”

“Yes.”

“How do you have this?”

“Elena gave it to me after prison.”

Serena opened the first page.

6:47 a.m. — Nico arrived. I was here.

Below it, in Lucian's handwriting, was another line.

4 years, 8 months later — I am here now. I know that does not erase where I wasn't.

Serena's eyes filled.

Lucian did not kneel immediately.

“I don't want our old marriage back.”

“Good.”

“It was bad.”

“Parts were good.”

“Yes.”

“But not enough.”

“No.”

He continued.

“I don't want you to marry me because we have Nico.”

“I don't want forgiveness confused with reconciliation.”

“I don't want history to become obligation.”

Serena cried.

“What do you want?”

“You.”

He smiled sadly.

“If you freely want me too.”

Then he knelt.

“Serena Vale, would you consider building something new with me?”

She looked at him.

“Consider?”

“I am trying not to pressure you.”

She laughed through tears.

“You've overcorrected.”

“Probably.”

She held out her hand.

“Yes.”

Lucian stopped.

“Yes, you'll consider?”

“Yes, I'll marry you, idiot.”

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

Then stood and kissed her.

Nico entered wearing dinosaur pajamas.

He stared.

“Are you married?”

“No,” Serena said.

Lucian said:

“Soon.”

Nico thought.

“Can I be a dinosaur at the wedding?”

Serena looked at Lucian.

He shrugged.

“His choice.”

She laughed.

And six years after Serena disappeared through the center of Lucian's empire, she chose him again.

May you like

Not because he found her.

Because he finally learned how not to chase what had the right to walk away.
