Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Hid My Daughter Behind His Own Body—Then I Discovered My Dead Husband Had Been Keeping a Terrifying Secret

The first gunshot shattered a window somewhere below us.

Emma screamed.

I pulled her against my chest and dropped behind the sofa.

Alessandro Moretti moved toward the doorway with terrifying calm.

"Stay down," he ordered.

His voice was low.

Controlled.

Nothing like the furious shouting I expected from a man whose mansion had just been attacked.

Marco appeared in the corridor.

"East entrance compromised. Three intruders. Security is containing them."

"Guests?"

"Being evacuated through the west gallery."

"Vivian?"

Marco hesitated.

"Unaccounted for."

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"Find her."

Another shot echoed.

Emma buried her face against my neck.

"Mommy, I'm scared."

"I know, sweetheart."

I kissed her curls.

"I'm right here."

Alessandro glanced toward us.

Then he removed his suit jacket and draped it over Emma's shoulders.

It was enormous on her.

She looked like a frightened little bird wrapped in black wool.

"Miss Emma," he said gently, "I need you to be very brave."

She peeked at him.

"Like a princess?"

"Braver."

"Like a dragon?"

A faint smile appeared.

"Exactly like a dragon."

She considered that.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

Alessandro looked at me.

"There's a protected staircase behind the library. Marco will take you there."

"What about you?"

"I'll follow."

I didn't believe him.

But I had no time to argue.

Marco guided us through a concealed doorway into a narrow passage lined with stone.

The mansion's emergency lighting flickered on.

We descended two flights of stairs.

Emma held Mr. Bunny so tightly that one of his blue ears folded backward.

At the bottom, Marco opened a steel door.

Beyond it was a small security room with reinforced walls, a medical cabinet, and several monitors.

"Stay here," he said.

I stepped inside.

"Where is Alessandro?"

"Making sure nobody follows."

The door closed.

A heavy lock clicked.

For several seconds, I stood motionless.

Then Emma tugged my sleeve.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, baby?"

"Is the angry lady coming?"

I knelt.

"No."

"Promise?"

I wanted to promise.

God, I wanted to.

But after everything that had happened, I no longer knew which promises were safe to make.

So I told her the truth.

"I'm going to do everything I can to keep you safe."

Emma nodded.

Then climbed into my lap.

We sat together beneath the cold fluorescent lights.

And waited.

***

Twenty minutes later, Alessandro entered.

There was blood on his shirt cuff.

I stood immediately.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"That's blood."

"Not mine."

The answer should have frightened me.

Instead, I found myself studying his face for signs of pain.

He noticed.

"I'm all right, Claire."

I hated how relieved I felt.

"What happened?"

"Three men entered through the east service gate. Security stopped them. One was arrested and two are receiving medical treatment under guard."

"Who sent them?"

"We don't know yet."

I looked at Emma.

She was sitting on the floor, making Mr. Bunny drink imaginary tea from a plastic cup.

"Why would anyone attack a child over a toy?"

Alessandro's expression darkened.

"Because the toy may contain information worth more than every asset in this house."

I stared at him.

"Then take it."

He looked surprised.

I continued.

"If it's putting Emma in danger, take the rabbit and find whatever is inside."

Emma looked up.

"No!"

My heart broke.

"Sweetheart—"

"No! Daddy gave him to me!"

She hugged the rabbit and began crying.

Alessandro immediately crouched beside her.

"Emma."

She shook her head.

"Nobody takes Mr. Bunny."

"Nobody is going to take him without your permission."

I looked at Alessandro.

He met my eyes.

Then turned back to Emma.

"Can I tell you a secret?"

She sniffled.

"What?"

"When I was little, I had a stuffed lion."

Her eyes widened.

"A real lion?"

"A toy lion."

"What was his name?"

"Captain."

Emma considered that.

"That's a funny name."

"I thought it was excellent."

She smiled through her tears.

Alessandro continued.

"My father wanted me to stop carrying him when I was six."

"What did you do?"

"I hid him in my bedroom."

Emma gasped.

"You were naughty."

"Very."

For the first time that night, she giggled.

Alessandro smiled.

Then he said, "I understand why Mr. Bunny is important. But I think your daddy may have hidden something inside him to help keep you safe."

Emma looked at the rabbit.

"Like treasure?"

"Maybe."

"Can we find it without hurting him?"

Alessandro glanced at me.

"We can try."

***

An hour later, a specialist arrived.

Her name was Dr. Sofia Conti.

She was a textile conservator who had worked with museums across Europe.

I stared at Alessandro.

"You called a museum expert?"

"Emma asked us not to hurt the rabbit."

I looked at him.

Something warm moved through my chest.

It frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

Sofia examined Mr. Bunny beneath a bright lamp.

Emma sat beside her, watching every movement.

The rabbit was faded from years of hugs and washing.

Its left ear had been repaired twice.

One plastic eye was slightly scratched.

Sofia turned it gently.

"Interesting."

My heart quickened.

"What?"

"The black symbol is stitched with a different thread from the original toy."

Alessandro leaned forward.

"Can you examine the seam?"

"Yes, but I need permission."

Emma looked at me.

I nodded.

She took a deep breath.

"Okay. But be gentle."

Sofia smiled.

"I promise."

Using delicate tools, she carefully opened a few stitches beneath the ear.

Inside was a narrow waterproof sleeve.

My breath caught.

Sofia removed it.

A tiny memory card rested inside.

Alessandro went completely still.

Marco stepped closer.

"Boss."

Alessandro nodded.

"Get our digital forensic specialist. Preserve the card exactly as found."

I stared at the little object.

Daniel had hidden it inside our daughter's toy.

Two years earlier.

Before his supposed death.

Why?

Sofia repaired the seam with matching thread.

Then she handed the rabbit back.

Emma hugged him.

"See, Mommy? He's okay."

I kissed her forehead.

"Yes, baby."

But nothing about our lives was okay anymore.

***

The memory card contained an encrypted archive.

Alessandro's specialist, Luca Ferraro, examined it using isolated forensic equipment.

He worked for three hours before calling us into the adjoining room.

"The data is intact," he said.

"Can you open it?" Alessandro asked.

"Not without the correct passphrase."

Emma was asleep upstairs under the supervision of a trusted caregiver.

I stood beside Alessandro.

"The words she said," I whispered.

He nodded.

Luca entered the phrase.

When the black crown falls, the little blue king comes home.

The screen changed.

A second authentication prompt appeared.

IDENTIFY THE KEEPER.

I stared at it.

"What does that mean?"

Luca shook his head.

"Could be a name."

Alessandro looked at me.

"Did Daniel have a nickname for Emma?"

I thought.

"He called her his little star."

Luca entered it.

Access denied.

"Anything else?"

I closed my eyes.

Daniel's voice came back to me.

The way he sang while making breakfast.

The way he carried Emma around the apartment.

The way he called her his little miracle.

Then I remembered something.

On the day Emma was born, Daniel had held her against his chest and whispered, "My little bluebird."

I opened my eyes.

"Bluebird."

Luca entered the word.

The screen flashed.

ACCESS GRANTED.

I stopped breathing.

A directory appeared.

Hundreds of files.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Recorded conversations.

Bank transfers.

And a video labeled:

FOR CLAIRE.

My knees weakened.

Alessandro pulled out a chair.

"Sit."

I sat.

Luca opened the video.

The screen filled with Daniel's face.

Alive.

Smiling sadly.

My husband.

My dead husband.

"Claire," he began.

I covered my mouth.

"If you're watching this, something has gone terribly wrong."

Tears spilled down my cheeks.

Daniel looked exhausted.

There was a bruise near his temple.

"I need you to know that I never wanted to lie to you."

I shook my head.

"Daniel..."

He continued.

"My real work involved tracing money used to finance criminal organizations. I was investigating a network that called itself the Black Crown."

He glanced off camera.

"At first, I believed it was simply a financial operation. Then I discovered that powerful people were using the network to manipulate entire families."

Alessandro stood motionless.

Daniel continued.

"The Black Crown doesn't belong to one organization. It's a secret agreement among corrupt advisers, financiers, and family members who profit by keeping the major criminal families fighting."

I stared at the screen.

"They arrange betrayals. They manufacture conflicts. They steal assets during the chaos."

Daniel swallowed.

"And I discovered who controls the money."

The video paused briefly.

Then a photograph appeared.

Carlo Romano.

Vivian's father.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Daniel's voice continued.

"Carlo Romano is one of the principal organizers. But he isn't acting alone."

Another photograph appeared.

A younger man.

Dark-haired.

Wearing a Moretti family ring.

Alessandro made a sound I had never heard from him.

A broken, disbelieving breath.

I looked up.

"Who is that?"

His face had gone pale.

"My brother."

I stared at the screen.

"Your brother?"

Alessandro nodded slowly.

"Matteo."

I remembered hearing about him.

Matteo Moretti had supposedly died five years earlier in a boating accident.

His death had been one of the reasons Alessandro became head of the family.

But Daniel's video showed Matteo standing beside Carlo Romano.

Alive.

The recording continued.

"Claire, if Alessandro Moretti sees this, tell him his brother is alive."

Alessandro gripped the back of a chair.

"And tell him Matteo has been working with Romano to destroy him."

Silence swallowed the room.

I stared at the man beside me.

For the first time, Alessandro Moretti looked truly devastated.

Not angry.

Not dangerous.

Devastated.

His brother was alive.

And apparently responsible for years of betrayal.

***

The next morning, I found Alessandro standing alone in the garden.

The sun had barely risen.

Mist floated above the hedges.

He wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

His dark hair was disheveled.

For once, he looked less like a Mafia boss and more like a man who had not slept.

I approached quietly.

"Alessandro."

He turned.

"Claire."

"Have you been out here all night?"

"Most of it."

I stood beside him.

For a while, we watched the sunrise.

Then I asked, "Did you love your brother?"

He laughed softly.

"More than anyone."

I looked at him.

"Our father was a difficult man. Matteo protected me when we were children. He taught me how to ride a bicycle. How to swim. How to stand up to men who thought fear made them important."

His voice broke slightly.

"When he died, I thought part of me died with him."

I swallowed.

"And now?"

"Now I don't know whether the brother I loved ever existed."

I understood that feeling.

I had spent two years mourning Daniel.

Now I was discovering that my husband had lived an entirely different life.

"Maybe he was both," I said.

Alessandro looked at me.

"What?"

"The brother who loved you and the man who betrayed you. People can be more than one thing."

He stared at the garden.

"That doesn't make it easier."

"No."

I hesitated.

Then placed my hand over his.

He looked down.

I almost pulled away.

But he turned his hand and gently held mine.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "I'm sorry Vivian hurt you."

I looked at him.

"That wasn't your fault."

"She was my fiancée."

"Why were you marrying her?"

His expression darkened.

"An alliance between families."

"Did you love her?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

I blinked.

"Then why agree?"

"Because I thought the marriage would prevent a war."

I looked toward the mansion.

"And now?"

"Now I think the marriage was designed to make sure I never discovered the truth."

I felt a chill.

"Does Vivian know about Matteo?"

"I don't know."

"Then you need to find out."

He nodded.

I started to withdraw my hand.

He held it a moment longer.

"Claire."

"Yes?"

"Whatever happens, Emma will be protected."

I looked at him.

"Don't make promises you can't keep."

His expression softened.

"Then I'll make a different one."

"What?"

"I won't make decisions about your daughter without you."

Something tightened in my chest.

It was such a simple promise.

And after two years of being powerless, it meant more than he could understand.

***

That afternoon, investigators working with the family's legal advisers began reviewing Daniel's archive.

The evidence was enormous.

Some files implicated Carlo Romano.

Others connected Matteo Moretti to offshore accounts and suspicious transfers.

Several appeared to document attempts to manipulate disputes among the twelve families.

But one folder caught my attention.

It was labeled:

BENNETT — STATUS UNKNOWN.

I opened it.

Inside were photographs of Daniel taken after the date of his supposed death.

One showed him entering a building in Switzerland.

Another showed him walking beside a lake.

A third showed him sitting in a hospital room.

My heart hammered.

The dates were clear.

Daniel had been alive months after the accident.

I stared at the photographs.

Then I found a final document.

A medical discharge record.

The name had been changed.

But the photograph was unmistakable.

Daniel.

The discharge date was only eight months earlier.

I covered my mouth.

He had survived.

At least until then.

Alessandro appeared beside me.

"Claire?"

I turned the screen toward him.

His expression changed.

"Where was this taken?"

"Switzerland."

He examined the record.

Then looked at me.

"We need to verify it."

I nodded.

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

For two years, I had told Emma that Daddy was in heaven.

For two years, I had believed I would never hear his voice again.

Now there was a possibility that he was alive.

Somewhere.

Alone.

Perhaps unable to return.

Alessandro crouched beside my chair.

"Claire."

I looked at him.

"We'll find out."

I wanted to believe him.

But before I could answer, Luca entered.

His face was pale.

"Boss."

Alessandro stood.

"What?"

"We found something else in the archive."

"What?"

"A recent communication."

"From whom?"

Luca looked at me.

"Daniel Bennett."

My heart stopped.

"When?"

"Three days ago."

I gripped the desk.

"What did he say?"

Luca turned his laptop around.

A single message appeared.

IF CLAIRE AND EMMA ARE AT VILLA MORETTI, GET THEM OUT. MATTEO KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE.

I stared at the words.

Three days ago.

Daniel had been alive three days ago.

And he knew exactly where we were.

Then Luca opened the attachment.

A photograph.

Emma playing in the Villa Moretti garden.

Taken from outside the security fence.

I felt sick.

Someone had been watching my daughter.

Alessandro's expression turned deadly.

"Marco," he said into his phone, "lock down the grounds."

Then he looked at me.

"Claire, we have to leave."

"Where?"

"Somewhere Matteo can't reach."

I stared at the photograph.

And for the first time, I realized the most terrifying part of Daniel's secret.

May you like

My husband might still be alive.

But someone was willing to kill our daughter to keep him silent.
