Chapter 3 - My Dead Husband Was Alive in Switzerland—But the Mafia Boss’s Brother Offered Me a Deal That Could Cost My Daughter Everything

By sunrise, Emma and I were inside a secluded villa overlooking Lake Maggiore.

The property belonged to a retired physician who had known Alessandro's mother.

There were no family portraits on the walls.

No armed men in the corridors.

No chandeliers or marble staircases.

Just a quiet house surrounded by pine trees and water.

It should have felt peaceful.

Instead, every unfamiliar sound made me jump.

Emma sat on the living room rug arranging wooden blocks.

Mr. Bunny watched from a cushion.

She had no idea that the rabbit she loved had exposed a conspiracy involving some of the most powerful people in Italy.

She only knew that we had left the big house in the middle of the night.

"Mommy?"

I looked up.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we on vacation?"

I swallowed.

"Something like that."

She smiled.

"Can we go swimming?"

"Maybe later."

"Can Mr. Bunny swim?"

"Absolutely not."

She giggled.

For a moment, I almost felt normal.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

My stomach tightened.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

"Claire."

The world stopped.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it whisper goodnight.

I had heard it laugh in our kitchen.

I had heard it sing terribly off-key while carrying our daughter around the apartment.

"Daniel?"

A breath.

Then:

"Claire, thank God."

My knees weakened.

I sank onto the sofa.

"Daniel?"

"I'm here."

I covered my mouth.

For two years, I had dreamed about hearing his voice again.

Now that dream had become real.

And I was terrified.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you yet."

"Why?"

"Because the people watching me may be listening."

Tears blurred my vision.

"You let me believe you were dead."

Silence.

"Claire..."

"You let me bury you."

His breathing changed.

"I know."

"You let Emma grow up without her father."

"I know."

"Then tell me why."

He was quiet for several seconds.

Finally, he said, "Because I thought staying away was the only way to keep you alive."

I closed my eyes.

I had heard that explanation before.

From men who believed love gave them permission to make decisions for everyone else.

"Daniel, where are you?"

"Near Lugano."

My heart hammered.

"Are you safe?"

"Not completely."

"Are you hurt?"

"I'm recovering."

"From what?"

A pause.

"An attack."

I pressed my hand against my forehead.

"Who attacked you?"

"People working for Matteo Moretti."

I looked toward the doorway.

Alessandro stood there.

He had heard the name.

His expression hardened.

I turned on the speakerphone.

"Daniel, Alessandro is here."

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "Moretti."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Bennett."

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Finally, Daniel said, "You found the rabbit."

"Yes."

"And the archive?"

"Yes."

Daniel exhaled.

"Then you know about Matteo."

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"I know he's alive."

"I'm sorry."

"Save your apologies. Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"Then tell me what you do know."

Daniel hesitated.

Then said, "Matteo is preparing to take control of the twelve-family council."

Alessandro went still.

"How?"

"By exposing financial records that implicate several family leaders. He plans to use the evidence to force their cooperation."

"And Carlo Romano?"

"His partner."

I looked toward Emma.

She was still playing.

Unaware that her father's voice was coming from my phone.

"Daniel," I whispered, "does Emma know you're alive?"

He went silent.

Then:

"No."

My throat tightened.

"She asks about you every night."

I heard him inhale sharply.

"Claire..."

"She still sleeps with the rabbit you gave her."

His voice broke.

"I know."

I stared at the phone.

"Then come home."

Silence.

"Please," I whispered.

Daniel took a shaky breath.

"I want to."

"Then do it."

"I need to finish this."

I closed my eyes.

"Finish what?"

"Making sure they can never hurt you again."

Before I could answer, the line disconnected.

I stared at the screen.

Then I began to cry.

***

Alessandro did not try to comfort me immediately.

He waited.

He sat across from me while I cried into my hands.

He did not tell me everything would be fine.

He did not promise Daniel would return.

He simply stayed.

After several minutes, I looked up.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Crying."

His expression softened.

"Claire, your husband just came back from the dead. You're allowed to cry."

I laughed weakly.

He handed me a tissue.

I wiped my face.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to feel."

"Then don't decide yet."

I looked at him.

He continued.

"You can be relieved he's alive and furious that he lied. Both things can be true."

I stared at him.

For a man raised in a world where weakness was punished, Alessandro understood grief better than I expected.

"Did you ever wish your brother was alive?" I asked.

He looked toward the window.

"Every day."

"And now?"

His expression changed.

"Now I wish the man he became had never existed."

I swallowed.

"I'm sorry."

He shook his head.

"Don't be."

Then he stood.

"I'll arrange for someone to verify Daniel's location."

"Can I go to him?"

"Not until we know it's safe."

I opened my mouth.

He raised one hand.

"Not because I'm ordering you. Because I don't want you walking into a trap."

I studied him.

"That's a better explanation."

A faint smile appeared.

"I'm learning."

***

Two days later, we received confirmation.

Daniel was alive.

He had been treated at a private clinic near Lugano under an assumed name.

He had suffered serious injuries during an attack eight months earlier.

He had spent months recovering while continuing to gather evidence against the Black Crown network.

But the most shocking discovery came from the financial records.

Daniel had not been working alone.

Someone inside the Moretti family had helped him.

Someone who had secretly funded the investigation.

Alessandro's mother.

Isabella Moretti.

She had died six years earlier.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

I stared at the report.

"Another person who supposedly died?"

Alessandro looked as stunned as I felt.

"My mother died of cancer."

"Are you sure?"

He stared at me.

"I attended her funeral."

I hesitated.

"So did I attend Daniel's."

The words hung between us.

Alessandro looked away.

Then he called Marco.

"Find everything you can about my mother's final medical records."

His voice was steady.

But his hand trembled.

***

That evening, Emma asked me a question that nearly broke me.

"Mommy, does Daddy still love me?"

I knelt beside her bed.

"Of course he does."

She hugged Mr. Bunny.

"Then why doesn't he come?"

I closed my eyes.

How could I explain danger, deception, and organized crime to a three-year-old?

How could I explain that her father had chosen to disappear because he believed it would save us?

How could I explain that love sometimes became tangled with terrible decisions?

I brushed her curls away from her face.

"Sometimes grown-ups make choices that are hard to understand."

Emma frowned.

"Bad choices?"

"Sometimes."

"Like the angry lady?"

I almost smiled.

"Sometimes."

She looked at the rabbit.

"Mr. Bunny says Daddy is coming."

My throat tightened.

"Does he?"

She nodded.

"He told me."

I kissed her forehead.

"I hope he's right."

***

At midnight, Alessandro knocked on my door.

I opened it.

He looked exhausted.

"Did you find something?"

He nodded.

"About my mother."

I stepped into the hallway.

"What?"

He handed me a photograph.

Isabella Moretti.

Older than I remembered from the portraits.

Standing beside a lake.

The date was six months earlier.

My breath caught.

"She's alive."

Alessandro nodded.

His eyes were red.

"Apparently."

I stared at him.

"How is that possible?"

He leaned against the wall.

"I don't know."

For the first time since meeting him, he looked completely lost.

I reached for his hand.

He held it tightly.

"Alessandro..."

He looked at me.

"I buried my mother."

His voice broke.

"I stood beside her coffin. I watched them lower it into the ground."

I swallowed.

"Maybe she had a reason."

He laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone keeps saying."

I understood.

Because I was tired of reasons too.

Tired of secrets.

Tired of people disappearing in the name of protection.

Tired of powerful men deciding that love justified lies.

I stepped closer.

"Then let's find the truth."

He looked at me.

"Together?"

I nodded.

"Together."

For a moment, he simply stared.

Then he pulled me into a careful embrace.

I rested my forehead against his chest.

His heartbeat was steady beneath my cheek.

I should have stepped away.

He was engaged to another woman.

He was dangerous.

He belonged to a world that had already destroyed my family.

But in that moment, he was also the only person who understood what it felt like to discover that grief itself had been manipulated.

He held me gently.

And for the first time in two years, I did not feel completely alone.

***

The following morning, Vivian Romano arrived at the villa.

I heard her voice before I saw her.

"This is outrageous! Alessandro, you cannot keep ignoring me!"

I stepped into the hallway.

Vivian stood near the entrance wearing a white designer coat.

Her father was beside her.

Carlo Romano.

Alessandro appeared from the library.

"How did you find this property?"

Vivian lifted her chin.

"I'm your fiancée."

"Not anymore."

Silence.

Her face went pale.

"What?"

"The engagement is over."

Carlo stepped forward.

"Alessandro, think carefully."

"I have."

"You cannot dissolve an alliance because of a servant."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"This has nothing to do with Claire's position."

Vivian looked at me.

Hatred flashed across her face.

"You."

I said nothing.

She approached.

"You think you've won?"

I looked at her calmly.

"I wasn't competing."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with."

Alessandro stepped between us.

"Vivian. Leave."

Carlo's voice became cold.

"You're making a mistake."

Alessandro looked at him.

"No. I'm correcting one."

For a moment, I thought Carlo might threaten him.

Instead, he smiled.

A slow, unpleasant smile.

"Very well."

He turned toward the door.

Then stopped.

"Before we go, perhaps Mrs. Bennett would like to know something."

My stomach tightened.

Alessandro's expression changed.

"Carlo."

The older man ignored him.

"Your husband didn't simply disappear, Claire."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"He made a bargain."

My blood went cold.

"What bargain?"

Carlo smiled.

"His life for yours."

I felt the room tilt.

He continued.

"Daniel agreed to disappear and surrender certain evidence. In exchange, you and your daughter would be left alone."

I stared at him.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

He reached into his coat.

Alessandro moved instantly.

"Hands where I can see them."

Carlo slowly withdrew a photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Daniel.

Standing beside Matteo Moretti.

Both men looking directly at the camera.

The photograph was dated only six weeks earlier.

I felt sick.

"Why was Daniel with Matteo?"

Carlo smiled.

"Because your husband has been working with the man you all believe is your enemy."

I stared at the photograph.

Then at Alessandro.

His face had gone cold.

Carlo continued.

"Perhaps you should ask Daniel which side he's really on."

Vivian smiled triumphantly.

Then she looked at me.

"Still think your husband is a hero?"

I couldn't speak.

Because the photograph showed something I had not expected.

Daniel wasn't restrained.

He wasn't frightened.

He was shaking Matteo's hand.

And suddenly, I had to confront a possibility more painful than the lie about his death.

My husband might have chosen to betray us.

***

That night, I called Daniel again.

He answered after several rings.

"Claire."

"Why were you with Matteo Moretti?"

Silence.

"Daniel."

"Where did you hear that?"

"Carlo Romano showed me a photograph."

His breathing changed.

"Claire, listen carefully."

"No. You listen."

My voice shook.

"For two years, I raised our daughter alone. I buried you. I mourned you. I lost our home. I worked as a maid because I couldn't afford groceries."

He said nothing.

"And now I discover you're alive, working with dangerous men, and still refusing to tell me the truth."

"Claire—"

"Did you make a deal with Matteo?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

"Why?"

"Because he had something I needed."

"What?"

"Proof that Isabella Moretti was alive."

I froze.

"Alessandro's mother?"

"Yes."

"And why did you need that?"

Daniel took a breath.

"Because Isabella knows who really created the Black Crown."

I gripped the phone.

"Who?"

He hesitated.

Then said:

"Someone Alessandro trusts more than anyone."

I looked toward the library.

Alessandro stood near the window, speaking quietly with Marco.

My stomach tightened.

"Who, Daniel?"

His voice dropped.

"Marco Bellini."

I stopped breathing.

Alessandro's security chief.

His closest adviser.

The man who had brought us to this villa.

The man responsible for protecting Emma.

I looked toward the hallway.

Marco turned.

Our eyes met.

And he smiled.

May you like

A small, knowing smile.

Then my phone went dead.
