Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Thought Caroline Was Only a Maid—Until He Learned She Had Spent Eight Months Inside His Mansion Hunting the Man Who Murdered Her Husband and His SisterCaroline woke to the smell of antiseptic.

For several seconds she did not know where she was.

Then pain burned through her side.

“Don’t move.”

She opened her eyes.

Luca Moretti sat beside the bed.

No jacket.

Black shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows.

A dried streak of blood marked one cuff.

Her blood.

“You’re staring,” Caroline whispered.

“You were shot.”

“I noticed.”

“The bullet passed through.”

“Convenient.”

“You lost enough blood to become unconscious.”

“I've had worse dates.”

Luca stared.

Caroline sighed.

“Humor helps.”

“It’s annoying.”

“That helps too.”

She tried sitting.

Luca immediately reached toward her.

Then stopped before touching.

“Can I?”

The question surprised her.

“Yes.”

He supported her shoulders.

Caroline studied him.

This was not the Luca Moretti described in newspapers.

Not the criminal king people whispered about.

This was Elena’s older brother.

The one who checked under beds for monsters.

The one who had spent twelve years believing his sister abandoned him.

“Lucy?”

“Safe.”

“Rachel?”

“With her.”

“Vanessa?”

“Missing.”

“Julian?”

“Also missing.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“You’re going to tell me everything.”

Caroline nodded.

“My husband worked for Julian.”

“Matthew Hayes.”

“Yes.”

Matthew had been a forensic accountant.

Brilliant.

Kind.

Terrible cook.

He believed numbers could expose lies people were clever enough to hide in words.

Three years into their marriage, Matthew discovered Julian Bellini’s network.

Shell corporations.

False manifests.

Illegal weapons hidden in commercial shipments.

Money siphoned from Moretti Maritime.

“He thought he could quietly collect evidence.”

Caroline stared at her hands.

“He underestimated Julian.”

One evening Matthew called her.

He sounded terrified.

He told her not to go home.

Caroline did anyway.

She arrived in time to see Julian standing in their kitchen.

Matthew was on his knees.

Vanessa was there too.

Luca’s expression changed.

“Vanessa witnessed the murder?”

“Yes.”

“Did she participate?”

“No.”

Caroline hesitated.

“She begged Julian to stop.”

That mattered.

“But she helped cover it up.”

“Yes.”

Julian shot Matthew.

Caroline ran.

A bullet grazed her foot as she escaped through the garage.

She lived in shelters under false names.

Eventually she met Elena.

“Elena recognized Julian’s name.”

Caroline continued.

“The first time I said it, she dropped a coffee mug.”

That was when their stories connected.

Elena confessed everything.

At eighteen, terrified after receiving forged documents suggesting her father planned to trade her in marriage, she had run.

Julian found her.

He presented himself as rescuer.

He rented her an apartment.

Gave her money.

Then gradually isolated her.

“He controlled her without chains.”

Caroline looked at Luca.

“That was what made it effective.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“When did she discover the truth?”

“After Lucy started school.”

Lucy had asked questions.

Why didn’t she have grandparents?

Why were there no photographs of her mother as a child?

Why did Uncle Julian become angry whenever she mentioned Chicago?

Elena began searching.

She discovered old newspapers.

Interviews.

A photograph of Luca offering a ten-million-dollar reward for information.

“She realized you never stopped looking.”

Luca looked away.

Caroline continued softly.

“She cried for three days.”

He closed his eyes.

“She thought I hated her.”

“No.”

“She thought I’d believe she betrayed us.”

“No.”

“She was ashamed.”

“She was eighteen.”

His voice broke.

“She was a kid.”

Caroline reached for his hand.

Then stopped.

Luca noticed.

He turned his palm upward.

She placed her fingers against his.

It was the first voluntary touch between them.

“Elena loved you,” Caroline said.

His eyes glistened.

“She talked about you constantly.”

“What happened the night she died?”

Caroline took a breath.

“Elena found proof Julian had been stealing from your family.”

She planned to send it to Luca.

But before she could, Julian learned what she had found.

Elena brought Lucy to Rachel.

She gave Rachel the photograph and necklace.

Then she called Caroline.

“She told me to stay hidden.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Caroline smiled sadly.

“Elena and I were both bad at following instructions.”

She drove toward Elena’s house.

She saw Julian’s car leaving.

Twenty minutes later, emergency vehicles raced toward the highway.

Elena’s car had gone through a guardrail.

“Did you see her?”

“No.”

“Body?”

“No.”

“Then we don’t know she’s dead.”

Caroline stared.

“You think she survived?”

“I think Julian wants me to believe something.”

Luca stood.

“And I stopped believing Bellinis tonight.”

He ordered Daniel to reopen the accident investigation.

Within hours they found inconsistencies.

The vehicle belonged to Elena.

But the body inside had been burned beyond visual identification.

Identification relied on dental records.

The dentist who provided them?

Retired.

Then disappeared.

Luca stared at the report.

“Find him.”

Daniel nodded.

Caroline noticed something else.

“The passenger-side airbag deployed.”

Luca looked over.

“So?”

“There was a passenger.”

Daniel examined the photographs.

“She wasn't alone.”

Caroline pointed.

“And look at the windshield.”

Blood.

Two different blood types.

Someone had been with Elena.

Maybe Julian.

Maybe someone else.

Then Daniel received a call.

His expression changed.

“We found the dentist.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Federal detention.”

Luca frowned.

“For what?”

“Identity fraud.”

They arranged a secure interview.

The dentist confessed within an hour.

Julian paid him to substitute dental records.

The corpse in Elena’s car was not Elena.

Luca stopped breathing.

“My sister could be alive.”

Caroline felt tears fill her eyes.

“Yes.”

Then Daniel entered carrying another file.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“We traced the Swiss ticket.”

“To Vanessa?”

“No.”

Daniel set down the report.

“The reservation was purchased from an account opened under Elena Moretti’s name three weeks ago.”

Silence.

Luca stared.

“If Elena is alive…”

Caroline whispered:

“Someone is moving her.”

Luca looked toward the door.

“Tonight.”

The investigation accelerated.

Private airfields.

Charter companies.

Rail stations.

Ports.

At 4:12 a.m., Daniel found something.

A woman matching Elena’s age had been transferred from a private psychiatric facility in Wisconsin three weeks earlier.

The facility was owned by a Bellini shell company.

Luca went completely still.

“They institutionalized her.”

Caroline felt sick.

“For how long?”

“Seven months.”

Almost exactly since the accident.

Elena had survived.

Julian had staged her death.

Then imprisoned her.

Luca slammed his fist into the wall.

Caroline flinched.

He noticed.

Immediately he stepped back.

“Sorry.”

She stared.

Mafia bosses, apparently, apologized.

At least this one did.

Daniel continued.

“The transfer order was signed by a doctor.”

“Name?”

“Dr. Anthony Romano.”

Luca knew him.

Family physician.

For twenty years.

A man who had eaten Christmas dinner with them.

Someone Elena trusted.

Vanessa had been right.

Julian had help from inside the Moretti circle.

Luca’s voice became ice.

“Bring Romano to me.”

They found him at home.

He confessed after seeing the evidence.

Julian had blackmailed him.

Years earlier Romano falsified prescriptions for Luca’s father.

Julian discovered it.

Used him.

Romano signed the commitment documents declaring Elena mentally incompetent.

“Where is she now?” Luca demanded.

Romano shook.

“I don’t know.”

Luca leaned closer.

“Wrong answer.”

“I swear.”

Caroline touched Luca’s arm.

He stopped.

Romano looked at her gratefully.

She asked:

“Who ordered the transfer?”

“Vanessa.”

Luca froze.

Caroline did too.

“Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She said Julian was going to kill Elena.”

Everything shifted again.

Maybe Vanessa had not been fleeing.

Maybe the money and ticket were intended for Elena.

Caroline remembered the briefcase.

One-way ticket.

Cash.

Enough to disappear.

“What if Vanessa was trying to get Elena out?”

Luca stared.

Caroline continued.

“Julian discovered it.”

That explained the kidnapping.

Vanessa had helped her brother for years.

But perhaps she finally turned against him.

Luca hated uncertainty.

Caroline could see it.

He preferred enemies clearly labeled.

Life rarely cooperated.

At dawn, a video arrived.

Vanessa sat bound beside Julian.

Her lip was bleeding.

Julian smiled into the camera.

“Hello, Luca.”

Luca stood in front of the screen.

“You've been looking for Elena for twelve years.”

Julian leaned closer.

“Come to Pier Nine at midnight.”

He held up Elena’s necklace.

Not Lucy’s.

A matching one.

“If you want your sister alive, bring Caroline Hayes.”

Caroline felt Luca look at her.

Julian smiled.

“And come without Daniel.”

Video ended.

Luca immediately said:

“No.”

Caroline turned.

“What?”

“You’re not going.”

“Julian specifically asked—”

“No.”

“He has Elena.”

“No.”

“He has Vanessa.”

“I heard him.”

“You need me.”

“I need you alive.”

Caroline stared.

There it was.

Protection.

Control.

The same line Elena had once heard from Julian.

She stood despite the pain.

“Don’t.”

Luca frowned.

“Don't what?”

“Don't become another man who tells a woman she has no choice because he knows what’s best for her.”

That struck him.

Caroline stepped closer.

“Julian murdered my husband.”

Her voice trembled.

“He imprisoned Elena.”

Another step.

“He tried to have me killed tonight.”

She looked directly into Luca’s eyes.

“I am going.”

Silence.

Luca’s instinct screamed to command.

She could see it.

But eventually he asked:

“What do you need?”

Caroline smiled faintly.

“A bulletproof vest would be a nice start.”

At 11:58 p.m., they entered Pier Nine.

Caroline wore a wire.

Luca carried no visible weapon.

Julian waited.

Vanessa sat tied to a chair.

Beside her stood a woman.

Thin.

Pale.

Dark hair cut short.

Luca stopped walking.

“Elena.”

The woman lifted her head.

Twelve years disappeared.

“Luca?”

His sister began crying.

Luca took one step.

Julian pressed a gun against Elena’s temple.

“No family reunion yet.”

Luca froze.

Caroline stared at Elena.

Alive.

Actually alive.

Then Vanessa shouted:

“Luca, don't give him anything!”

Julian struck her.

Elena screamed.

Luca’s face became murderous.

Julian smiled.

“Now.”

He looked at Caroline.

“You brought something that belongs to me.”

Caroline frowned.

Julian pointed at her coat.

“Matthew’s key.”

Her blood turned cold.

“I don’t know what you're talking about.”

“Yes, you do.”

He smiled.

“Your husband didn't die for documents, Caroline.”

“He died because of you.”

“He died because he stole something.”

Julian stepped closer.

“A key to an account containing eighty-six million dollars.”

Caroline stared.

“I don't have it.”

Julian laughed.

“You've had it for eighteen months.”

He pointed toward her neck.

Caroline instinctively touched the simple brass pendant she had worn since Matthew died.

Her wedding anniversary gift.

A tiny key.

She had never known what it opened.

Julian smiled.

“Give it to me.”

Luca looked at Caroline.

Then Elena.

Then Julian.

Caroline slowly removed the necklace.

“Let Elena go.”

“Key first.”

“No.”

Julian smiled.

“You think you have leverage?”

Caroline looked behind him.

“No.”

She smiled.

“But she does.”

Vanessa suddenly stood.

The ropes around her wrists fell away.

She had cut them.

Before Julian could turn, Vanessa drove a broken chair leg into his knee.

Julian screamed.

Luca lunged.

Gunfire erupted.

Caroline dropped.

Elena ran.

Vanessa tackled Julian.

Then another gunshot thundered.

Everyone froze.

Julian looked down.

Blood spread across his shirt.

But he hadn't been shot by Luca.

Vanessa hadn’t fired.

Neither had Caroline.

The bullet had come from behind them.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Daniel.

Luca’s trusted security chief.

His gun remained raised.

Luca stared.

“Daniel?”

Daniel smiled.

Then aimed directly at Luca.

“Sorry, Boss.”

Caroline’s heart stopped.

Daniel looked at Julian bleeding on the floor.

“You were supposed to give me the key before ruining everything.”

May you like

And Caroline finally understood.

Julian had never been the only traitor inside the Moretti family.
