Chapter 3 - Luca Found His Missing Sister Alive After Twelve Years—But the Man Who Betrayed Him Was the Loyal Soldier Who Had Been Standing at His Side the Entire TimeDaniel Russo had served Luca Moretti for fourteen years.

He had taken bullets for him.

Buried friends beside him.

Carried Luca’s father from the church after his fatal heart attack.

Or what Luca had always believed was a heart attack.

Now Daniel stood twenty feet away with a pistol aimed at Luca’s chest.

“Put it down,” Luca said.

Daniel laughed.

“You still sound like the boss.”

“I am.”

“Not tonight.”

Elena stood behind Luca.

Caroline crouched beside Vanessa.

Julian bled on the concrete.

Daniel’s men appeared from the warehouse shadows.

Four.

Then six.

Luca understood.

Daniel had built his own faction inside the Moretti organization.

“How long?”

Daniel smiled.

“Longer than you think.”

Luca’s face changed.

“My father?”

Daniel’s smile widened.

“He was becoming inconvenient.”

Elena gasped.

Luca went completely still.

“You killed him.”

“I adjusted his medication.”

Dr. Romano.

The falsified prescriptions.

It connected.

Luca’s father had not died naturally.

Daniel had murdered him slowly.

“Why?”

“Because your father discovered the money.”

The eighty-six million.

Julian had stolen from Moretti Maritime.

But he had not acted alone.

Daniel controlled security.

Julian controlled accounts.

Together they had siphoned money for years.

Elena discovered the scheme accidentally.

That was why she had truly been targeted.

The fake arranged-marriage story had served two purposes.

It removed Elena from the Moretti family.

And gave Julian a person whose identity he could exploit.

“Vanessa?” Luca asked.

Daniel laughed.

“A useful idiot.”

Vanessa flinched.

Julian groaned from the floor.

“Go to hell.”

Daniel kicked him.

Julian cried out.

“You were another useful idiot.”

Vanessa stared at her brother.

For the first time she understood.

Julian believed he had been Daniel’s partner.

He had actually been disposable.

Daniel pointed toward Caroline.

“The key.”

“No,” she said.

Daniel aimed at Elena.

Caroline immediately raised the necklace.

“Okay.”

Luca looked at her.

She shook her head slightly.

Trust me.

Caroline threw the necklace.

Daniel caught it.

He smiled.

“Finally.”

“What does it open?” Luca asked.

“A deposit box.”

“Where?”

“Geneva.”

“And the money?”

“Not just money.”

Daniel’s eyes gleamed.

“Records.”

Matthew Hayes had built an insurance policy.

Every payment.

Every murder.

Every official bribed.

Every shell company.

Enough evidence to destroy the Bellini network, Daniel’s faction and several corrupt officials.

Matthew hid the access code inside the key.

Caroline had unknowingly worn it around her neck for eighteen months.

Daniel backed toward the exit.

“Kill them.”

His men raised their weapons.

Then the warehouse lights went out.

Caroline smiled.

Luca heard it.

“You planned that?”

“Backup plan.”

Gunfire erupted.

But Caroline had not come to Pier Nine trusting Luca’s men.

She had contacted someone else.

Federal agents.

Matthew’s former investigator had helped her reach them months earlier.

The warehouse exploded into chaos.

Luca grabbed Elena.

Caroline pulled Vanessa behind machinery.

Julian crawled toward cover.

Daniel escaped.

Three of his men surrendered.

Two were wounded.

One disappeared with him.

When the lights returned, Luca held Elena.

Actually held her.

His sister shook violently against his chest.

“I’m sorry,” she sobbed.

“No.”

“I should have called.”

“You were eighteen.”

“I believed him.”

“You were eighteen.”

“I thought you hated me.”

Luca pulled back.

“Elena.”

He held her face.

“There has not been one day in twelve years when I stopped looking for you.”

She broke.

So did he.

Caroline turned away.

Some moments did not belong to witnesses.

Vanessa stood beside her.

“You hate me.”

Caroline looked at her.

“I haven't decided.”

“I helped Julian.”

“Yes.”

“I knew Elena was alive.”

“Yes.”

“I covered up Matthew’s murder.”

Caroline’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I deserve prison.”

“Probably.”

Vanessa gave a broken laugh.

“You're not very comforting.”

“I was shot yesterday.”

“Fair.”

Vanessa surrendered to federal authorities that morning.

She offered full cooperation.

Julian survived surgery.

He was arrested from his hospital bed.

Elena was taken somewhere secure.

Then came Lucy.

Luca insisted on being there.

Rachel brought the child into the room.

Lucy saw Elena.

For one second she froze.

Then:

“Mommy!”

Elena dropped to her knees.

Lucy ran.

Their collision nearly knocked Elena backward.

Mother and daughter clung to each other.

Everyone cried.

Even the federal agent standing outside.

Luca turned his face away.

Caroline noticed.

“Something in your eye?”

He glanced at her.

“Don't.”

She smiled.

Lucy eventually noticed him.

“Uncle Luca?”

He crouched.

“Yes.”

“Mom said you're scary.”

Elena laughed through tears.

“I said he looks scary.”

“Important distinction,” Luca muttered.

Lucy walked toward him.

Then hugged him.

Luca froze.

Caroline whispered:

“Arms.”

He glared.

“Use your arms.”

He carefully hugged Lucy.

Elena smiled.

For several hours, everything felt almost peaceful.

Then Caroline remembered Daniel.

He still had Matthew’s key.

And Daniel knew where the evidence was.

“We need to get to Geneva.”

Luca nodded.

Federal authorities could freeze the account.

But Daniel had contacts.

The race became international.

Then Caroline discovered something Matthew had hidden.

The key itself was worthless.

The real access code required Caroline’s biometric authorization.

Daniel did not know.

“He’ll contact me,” she said.

Luca nodded.

“He will.”

“You don’t like that.”

“No.”

“You’re doing the face.”

“What face?”

“The one where you consider locking me in a room.”

“I don't have that face.”

Elena spoke from across the room.

“He absolutely has that face.”

Luca stared at his sister.

Twelve years gone, and she was already betraying him.

Caroline laughed.

Something changed between them.

Luca looked at her differently.

Not as staff.

Not as someone he needed to protect.

As a woman who had walked into danger repeatedly for his family.

That evening, Caroline stood on the balcony outside the safe house.

Luca joined her.

“Your foot?”

“Hurts.”

“Side?”

“Also hurts.”

“You were shot and you're still standing.”

“So were you, according to house gossip.”

“Several times.”

“Show-off.”

He smiled.

Rare.

Caroline looked at him.

“You should do that more.”

“What?”

“Smile.”

“It damages my reputation.”

“Tragic.”

Silence settled.

Then Luca said:

“Why did you stay?”

“At the estate?”

“Yes.”

“You know why.”

“For Elena.”

“At first.”

Luca turned.

“At first?”

Caroline regretted the words.

He waited.

She looked out at the city.

“Then Lucy arrived.”

“And?”

“And I saw how you treated Toby.”

Luca frowned.

“Toby?”

“The gardener’s son.”

“What about him?”

“He broke your car window.”

“Yes.”

“I expected you to terrify him.”

“I made him wash the car.”

“You also bought him a baseball glove.”

Luca shrugged.

“His was falling apart.”

Caroline smiled.

“You're inconveniently human.”

“Don't spread it around.”

She laughed.

Then winced.

Luca instinctively steadied her.

His hand settled at her waist.

They both became still.

Caroline felt the heat of his palm.

Luca looked down at her.

“Caroline.”

“Yes?”

“I’m going to do something.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“I’m warning you first.”

Her heartbeat accelerated.

“What?”

He leaned closer.

Then stopped.

“Tell me no.”

She should have.

Her husband had been dead eighteen months.

Grief still lived inside her.

Luca’s life was dangerous.

Complicated.

He was the last man any sensible woman should kiss.

So Caroline whispered:

“I'm not saying no.”

Luca kissed her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Nothing like the ruthless man Chicago imagined.

Caroline’s fingers curled into his shirt.

For one moment she allowed herself to remember what warmth felt like.

Then she stepped back.

“Too soon.”

Luca nodded immediately.

“Okay.”

“I'm not saying never.”

His eyes lifted.

“Okay.”

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

They both knew.

Caroline answered.

Daniel.

“Hello, Caroline.”

Her blood chilled.

“You have something I need.”

“You stole something from me.”

“I borrowed a key.”

“It belonged to Matthew.”

“And Matthew stole from me.”

“No.”

Daniel laughed.

“Geneva. Tomorrow night.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

“You will.”

“Why?”

A video arrived.

Caroline opened it.

Rachel sat tied to a chair.

Lucy was beside her.

Caroline stopped breathing.

“No.”

Luca grabbed the phone.

Daniel continued.

“You people really need better safe houses.”

Luca’s face became murderous.

“If you touch that child—”

“Midnight tomorrow.”

Daniel laughed.

“Bring Caroline.”

The call ended.

They ran inside.

Elena was already screaming.

Lucy was gone.

Daniel had taken her daughter.

Luca reached for his gun.

Caroline grabbed his hand.

He looked at her.

“Remember what you promised Elena.”

“What?”

“You find monsters under the bed.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You don't become one.”

Luca stared at her.

Then slowly lowered the gun.

“What do we do?”

Caroline looked at Matthew’s files.

At the Geneva account.

At Daniel’s demand.

And then she saw it.

The mistake Daniel had made.

“He thinks he kidnapped our leverage.”

Luca frowned.

May you like

Caroline smiled without humor.

“He actually gave us his.”
