Chapter 2 - The List of Fifteen

By 1:15 AM, the grand ballroom on the main floor of the Blackwell estate was completely empty.

The three hundred wealthy guests—politicians, hedge-fund managers, international developers, and high-society socialites—had all been smoothly ushered out to their waiting luxury sedans by the impeccably trained staff.

The string quartet had packed their instruments into velvet cases and departed.

The floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the massive estate grounds showed nothing but dark, rain-slicked lawns and the distant red taillights of the final departing limousines.

Down in the subterranean security command center beneath the mansion, the air was cold, smelling of ozone, heated server racks, and fresh espresso.

Damon Blackwell stood in front of a wall of twenty-four high-definition monitors.

He had removed his tuxedo jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and rolled his crisp white shirt sleeves up to his elbows, revealing intricate, dark ink tattoos covering his forearms.

Matteo stood beside him, operating a master touchscreen console.

On the central screen, a crisp, high-resolution security video played on a continuous loop.

Timestamp: 9:32 PM.

The video showed the carpeted third-floor hallway outside the estate's private library.

Kate Bennett was walking down the hall carrying a heavy silver water pitcher.

Four young men in expensive tuxedos stepped out of the library doors, blocking her path.

The leader of the group was Preston Caldwell—twenty-seven years old, handsome, with golden hair, a cruel, arrogant smile, and a drink held loosely in his right hand.

The video had no audio, but the body language was horrifyingly clear.

Preston said something to Kate.

Kate attempted to step politely around him, keeping her eyes respectfully lowered.

Preston reached out and grabbed her right arm, yanking her violently toward the library door.

Kate fought back instantly, twisting her body away, striking her forearm hard against the sharp stone edge of the doorframe as she broke his grip.

The video clearly captured the exact second her wrist snapped—the violent jerk of her body, the sudden pale shock on her face, and the cruel, loud laughter of the men watching from the library doorway.

Preston laughed, taking a slow sip of his drink as Kate stumbled backward, cradled her broken arm, and ran desperately down the corridor toward the east storage room.

Damon stared at the screen.

His face was totally motionless, but the veins along his jawline stood out like thick steel wires.

“Pause it,” Damon said softly.

Matteo tapped the screen. The video froze on the faces of the men standing in the library doorway.

“Identify every single face,” Damon commanded.

Matteo pulled up a series of digital personnel files, overlaying facial recognition data onto the frozen video frame.

“Preston Caldwell,” Matteo read aloud in a flat, clinical voice. “Son of Senator Richard Caldwell. Beside him is Julian Vance, heir to Vance Logistics. To his left, Harrison Forde, managing partner at Forde Capital. Behind them in the library...”

Matteo swiped his hand across the screen, bringing up four additional camera angles from inside the library and the adjacent lounge.

“They had a private gathering tonight, Boss. Eight men inside the library. Four more waiting near the balcony doors. Three associates standing guard near the stairwell to make sure no housekeepers walked up.”

Matteo looked up at Damon.

“Fifteen men in total, Don Damon. All high-society. All legacy families in this city. Every single one of them either laid a hand on her, blocked her escape, or stood there laughing while Caldwell snapped her arm.”

Damon stared at the fifteen faces displayed across the glowing monitors.

Fifteen young men who believed that their fathers’ names, their families’ billions, and their political connections made them completely untouchable in this city.

Fifteen men who believed a twenty-six-year-old maid working an hourly shift was nothing more than disposable property for their amusement.

“Where are they now?” Damon asked softly.

Matteo pulled up live GPS tracking feeds.

“Caldwell and four of his close associates left the party at 11:30 PM in two private SUVs. They drove directly to Caldwell’s private penthouse at the Grand Regency Towers downtown. They ordered catering and four bottles of scotch. They are currently throwing an after-party.”

Matteo swiped to another screen.

“Julian Vance and three others went to a private club in the Financial District. The remaining six have returned to their respective family estates in the suburbs.”

Damon stood quietly in front of the monitors for a long, heavy moment.

The soft hum of the server racks was the only sound in the underground room.

When Damon finally spoke, his voice was so low it was almost a whisper, yet it held the absolute finality of a court judgment.

“All fifteen.”

Matteo didn't flinch. “Boss?”

“I want all fifteen secured before the sun comes up tomorrow morning,” Damon stated coldly. “Every single one of them. No exceptions. No ransom calls. No political negotiations.”

Matteo nodded grimly. “And Caldwell’s father? The senator?”

Damon turned his dark eyes toward his chief of security.

“Senator Caldwell will receive a private telephone call from my personal office at precisely 6:00 AM tomorrow,” Damon instructed smoothly. “He will be informed that his son has been permanently retired from public life. If he attempts to involve federal law enforcement, his private offshore banking records in the Cayman Islands will be leaked to the press within ten minutes.”

“Understood, Don Damon.” Matteo reached for his tactical radio. “How do you want the extractions handled?”

Damon stepped toward the elevator doors.

“Quietly,” Damon replied. “I don't want a single drop of blood spilled on public streets. I want them brought to the subterranean holding facility at the Old Iron Works in South Brooklyn.”

He stopped at the elevator threshold, looking back over his shoulder.

“And Matteo?”

“Yes, Boss?”

“Tell Dr. Reyes that Miss Bennett is to remain in the master guest suite on the fourth floor of this mansion tonight. She gets round-the-clock nursing care, fresh clothes, and absolute security. If she asks to leave, explain to her gently that she is under my personal protection until this matter is resolved.”

“Understood, Don Damon.”

Damon stepped into the elevator, the heavy steel doors sliding shut behind him, as the shadow of his vengeance descended across the city.
