Chapter 4 - The Cold Awakening

Deep beneath the industrial district of South Brooklyn, inside the windowless, reinforced concrete basement of the Old Iron Works facility, fifteen men woke up in the cold dark.

They were seated in heavy steel chairs arranged in a wide circle on the damp concrete floor.

Their wrists and ankles were bound tightly with heavy industrial zip-ties.

The air was freezing, smelling of rust, wet river silt, and fear.

Preston Caldwell groaned, shaking his head, trying desperately to clear the heavy drug-induced fog from his brain.

“W-where... where the hell are we?!” Preston screamed into the dark, his voice cracking with panic.

Beside him, Julian Vance began sobbing violently. “Preston! Oh God, Preston! They took us from my apartment! Who are these people?!”

Suddenly, high-powered overhead halogen lights flickered on with a loud metallic buzz, blinding all fifteen men.

Standing in the center of the concrete room, wearing a tailored dark coat, his hands casually resting inside his pockets, was Damon Blackwell.

Flanking him were Matteo, Walken, and ten broad-shouldered, armed enforcers standing silently in the shadows.

Preston stared at Damon, his eyes wide with sheer disbelief and rising terror.

“Blackwell?!” Preston gasped out, his confidence briefly returning. “What the hell is the meaning of this?! Do you have any idea who my father is?! He’s Senator Caldwell! If I’m not home in an hour, the FBI will tear your estate apart brick by brick!”

Damon did not answer him. He simply reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a smartphone, pressed a button, and set it on a metal table in front of them, activating the speakerphone.

The phone rang twice before a deep, trembling voice answered.

“Damon...?”

It was Senator Richard Caldwell.

Preston’s face lit up with desperate hope. “Dad! Dad, it’s Preston! Blackwell kidnapped me! I’m in some warehouse! Call the state police right now!”

Silence hung over the speaker for three agonizing seconds.

When the senator spoke again, his voice sounded broken, aged by twenty years, trembling with profound sorrow and fear.

“Shut up, Preston,” his father sobbed quietly over the line. “Just... shut your mouth.”

Preston froze. “Dad... what are you talking about?!”

“At 5:30 this morning, Damon’s attorneys sent sixty gigabytes of encrypted files to my private server,” Senator Caldwell revealed, his voice shaking. “Files detailing every offshore bribe, every land fraud deal, and every illegal account I’ve held for fifteen years. If Damon releases those files, I spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary, and our family is completely ruined.”

“Dad, no! You can’t let him do this to me!” Preston shrieked.

“You broke the arm of a woman under Damon Blackwell’s roof, Preston,” his father wept bitterly over the phone. “You thought you were untouchable because of my name. You brought this on yourself. Goodbye, son.”

CLICK.

The line went dead.

Preston stared at the silent phone on the table, his face draining of every single drop of color, turning a sickly, ghostly white.

The fourteen other young men around him burst into terrified weeping, begging for mercy, screaming promises of money, land, and silence.

Damon walked slowly over to Preston’s chair, stopping inches away, looking down at the golden-haired young man with absolute, terrifying coldness.

“Your father isn’t coming, Preston,” Damon said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that echoed off the concrete walls. “No judges are coming. No parole boards are coming. No police are coming.”

Damon leaned down until his dark eyes were inches from Preston’s terrified face.

“You broke her arm because you thought she was invisible,” Damon whispered softly. “Now, you and your fourteen friends are going to learn what it actually feels like to become completely invisible to the world.”

Damon straightened up and turned toward Matteo.

“Transport them to the private agricultural facility in northern Canada,” Damon instructed smoothly. “Hard labor. Ten-year contracts. No phone access. No Internet. No communication with the outside world.”

May you like

Preston shrieked and fought against his zip-ties, tears streaming down his face as Matteo’s men stepped forward with heavy sedatives once again.

Damon turned his back on the fifteen vanishing men and walked out into the cool morning air, his mind focused entirely on returning to the woman waiting for him at the mansion.
