Chapter 3 - The Woman in Elena’s Robe Had Been Paid to Make Her Leave—But the DNA Test Revealed Roman’s “Dead” Son Was Living Under Another Family’s NameRoman called Evelyn Carter before doing anything else.

Not a soldier.
Not fixer.
A lawyer.
Elena noticed.
“What are you doing?”
“Stopping amendment.”
“You can?”
“It's my trust.”
“Then stop it.”
Roman put phone on speaker.
Within twenty minutes attorneys froze unsigned documents.
David Klein was detained at airport for questioning over suspected financial fraud unrelated to family dispute, buying time.
Roman called Marcus.
“Find Sabrina.”
Marcus answered:
“She returned estate.”
“Keep her there.”
Elena's hand tightened.
“No violence.”
Roman looked at her.
“She manipulated you.”
“No violence.”
He stared.
Then phone.
“Marcus.”
“Yes?”
“No one touches her.”
Pause.
“Understood.”
Roman turned to Elena.
“I need to go.”
She stood.
“So do I.”
“No.”
The word emerged automatically.
Elena's expression changed.
Roman caught himself.
He breathed.
“I would prefer you stay because blood pressure is high.”
“Better.”
“You should not be dragged into—”
“I am already in it.”
“Yes.”
“So I'm coming.”
Vivian objected.
Doctor objected by phone.
Elena compromised.
She would go only if blood pressure remained below threshold and Vivian accompanied.
Roman wanted armed convoy.
Elena chose one security car.
He accepted.
That acceptance cost him something.
Good.
Change often did.
Sabrina waited in library.
No robe now.
Dark pants.
White blouse.
The woman who had occupied Elena's bedroom suddenly looked smaller.
Elena entered first.
Sabrina stood.
“Elena.”
“Sit.”
Sabrina glanced at Roman.
Elena almost laughed.
“You still look at him before deciding whether to listen to me.”
Sabrina sat.
Elena remained standing.
“Did you deliberately make me leave?”
Sabrina said nothing.
“Answer.”
“Yes.”
Roman's jaw clenched.
Elena didn't look at him.
“Why?”
“Because David said clause required you to leave voluntarily.”
“David Klein?”
“Yes.”
“Who paid him?”
“I don't know.”
“Who paid you?”
“Celeste.”
“That's incomplete.”
Sabrina looked surprised.
Elena continued.
“Celeste paid your company. Someone else gave instructions.”
Silence.
Roman stepped forward.
Sabrina's eyes flicked.
Elena raised hand.
Roman stopped.
She looked at Sabrina.
“Who?”
Sabrina whispered:
“Alexander Voss.”
Roman went still.
Vivian sat abruptly.
Elena looked between them.
“Who is that?”
Roman answered.
“My half-brother.”
Elena stared.
“You have a half-brother?”
Vivian closed eyes.
Roman looked ashamed.
“Another thing I should've told you.”
Elena laughed once.
It contained no humor.
“This family apparently requires index.”
Alexander Voss was sixty.
Roman's father had fathered him before marrying Vivian.
Alexander had never carried Marino name publicly.
But he had spent decades near businesses.
Consultant.
Investor.
Silent partner.
He had always believed Marino trust should have included him.
Roman's father refused.
Sabrina explained.
Alexander contacted her after learning Celeste searched for Gabriel.
He claimed he could help.
Then offered money for information.
“Why help alter trust?” Roman asked.
“He said Gabriel needed time.”
“Time for what?”
“To establish identity before Elena's baby became successor.”
Elena understood.
“If I stayed in house and baby was born, amendment names our son.”
“Yes.”
“If I left voluntarily, clause delays transition.”
“Yes.”
“Giving Gabriel time to appear.”
Sabrina nodded.
Roman's voice became cold.
“You used my wife.”
Sabrina looked at him.
“I was trying to restore your first son.”
“At expense of second.”
“I didn't know Elena's health would—”
“You knew she was thirty-four weeks pregnant.”
Sabrina looked down.
Elena sat opposite.
“Why robe?”
Sabrina's eyes filled unexpectedly.
“What?”
“Why my robe?”
“Because Alexander said you wouldn't leave unless humiliation was personal.”
Roman looked away.
That sentence belonged to him too.
Alexander had provided match.
Sabrina had lit it.
Roman had carried gasoline.
He could not blame conspiracy for choice he made in bedroom.
Elena saw realization.
Good.
Before more could be said, Marcus entered.
“We located boy.”
Roman stood.
“Where?”
“Connecticut.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Roman gripped chair.
Marcus placed photograph.
Same boy.
“Name is Gabriel Shaw.”
Roman sat.
“Gabriel.”
“They didn't even change first name?”
“They did originally. He changed it himself at twelve after finding baptism bracelet.”
Roman stared.
“Who raised him?”
“Thomas and Rebecca Shaw.”
“Who are they?”
“Thomas was pediatric surgeon at hospital where Gabriel supposedly died.”
Silence.
Marcus continued.
“He retired six months after funeral and moved to Vermont. Wife was neonatal nurse.”
Roman understood.
They had taken child.
“Kidnapped?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“Records suggest your father arranged private guardianship.”
“Then why tell Celeste Gabriel died later?”
“We don't know.”
“Does Gabriel know who he is?”
“Some.”
“How much?”
Marcus hesitated.
“He knows Roman Marino may be biological father.”
Roman couldn't breathe.
“And?”
“He doesn't want to meet you.”
That hurt more than expected.
Elena watched him.
“Why?”
Marcus answered carefully.
“Because Alexander reached him first.”
Roman's eyes hardened.
“What did he tell him?”
“That you ordered infant poisoning after discovering Gabriel might not be yours.”
Celeste gasped.
Roman stood so fast chair fell.
“What?”
“Alexander claims Gabriel is his son.”
Everyone froze.
Sabrina whispered:
“No.”
Marcus nodded.
“He provided DNA test.”
Roman's face emptied.
Celeste stared.
“That is impossible.”
Roman looked at her.
“Is it?”
She didn't answer.
“Celeste.”
Her tears came.
“Before you and I became exclusive…”
Roman laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
“Alexander and I were together once.”
Vivian whispered:
“Jesus Christ.”
Elena almost agreed.
Roman looked toward window.
His entire family tree had become weapon.
Marcus continued.
“We need independent DNA testing.”
Roman nodded.
“No contact until then.”
Celeste protested.
“He's my son.”
Roman turned.
“He is fourteen-year-old boy whose entire identity is collapsing. We don't storm into his life because adults are impatient.”
Elena looked at Roman.
That was first truly parental thing he had said.
Not ownership.
Consideration.
Three days later DNA samples were collected through attorneys.
Gabriel consented after counselor explained.
Roman spent waiting period at Vivian's guest house because Elena refused return estate.
He slept in downstairs room.
Not with Elena.
He attended obstetric appointments only when invited.
Sabrina was removed from estate.
Roman terminated her contract.
She surrendered devices to investigators.
David Klein confessed Alexander paid him $2.4 million through shell accounts to alter draft trust language.
Not valid amendment yet.
But goal was leverage.
Then DNA results arrived.
Roman opened envelope with Elena beside him.
Probability of paternity:
99.998%.
Roman Marino was Gabriel's biological father.
Roman sat silently.
Elena touched shoulder.
He covered her hand.
Not because marriage repaired.
Because grief needed witness.
Gabriel agreed to one meeting.
Neutral therapist's office.
Roman went alone.
Boy sat by window.
Fourteen.
Tall.
Thin.
Dark hair.
Roman saw himself at same age so strongly it hurt.
Gabriel looked at him.
“You're older than pictures.”
Roman almost laughed.
“So are you.”
Bad answer.
Boy smiled slightly anyway.
Roman sat.
“I don't know what to call you.”
“Roman is fine.”
“You don't want Dad?”
Roman's throat tightened.
“You have father who raised you.”
“Thomas.”
“Yes.”
“He lied.”
“So did I.”
Gabriel looked surprised.
Roman continued.
“I lied to my wife by omission. I hid your existence because talking about you hurt. That was selfish.”
“You thought I was dead.”
“Yes.”
“Did you poison me?”
“No.”
“You'd say that either way.”
“Yes.”
Roman respected logic.
“I brought records. Independent investigators. You don't have to believe me today.”
Gabriel studied.
“Alexander says you're dangerous.”
“I have been.”
“Are you Mafia?”
Roman paused.
“I was born into criminal family. I participated in things I'm not proud of. I spent years moving businesses legal, but legal business doesn't erase illegal choices.”
Gabriel frowned.
“You're admitting that?”
“You deserve truth.”
“Why now?”
“Because people already stole fourteen years from us using lies. I won't steal another day.”
Gabriel looked away.
“Do you want me to live with you?”
Roman thought of Elena.
Bedroom.
Control.
“No.”
Boy looked back.
“No?”
“I want you to live where you feel safe.”
“With Thomas and Rebecca?”
“If that's what you want.”
“They kidnapped me.”
“Maybe. Maybe they saved you. Investigation will determine.”
“You're not angry?”
“I am furious.”
“Then why aren't you taking me?”
Roman breathed.
“Because my anger doesn't make you property.”
Words changed him as he said them.
Gabriel looked at him for long time.
“Do I have brother?”
Roman smiled.
“Not yet.”
“Mom said Elena's pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“Does she hate me?”
Roman's smile disappeared.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Elena is better person than all of us.”
Gabriel almost smiled.
At end meeting he asked:
“Can I see baby when he's born?”
Roman's eyes filled.
“If Elena agrees.”
Again.
If Elena agrees.
Not I decide.
Outside therapist office, Roman found Elena waiting in car.
“You came.”
“You looked like man who might need ride.”
He entered passenger side.
For several minutes neither spoke.
Then Roman cried.
Quietly.
Elena let him.
No forgiveness speech.
No kiss.
Just hand in his.
That night Alexander Voss disappeared.
And at 2:14 a.m., Elena woke with warm fluid soaking sheets.
Her water had broken.
Thirty-five weeks.
She called Roman.
He answered instantly.
“I'm coming.”
Contractions began seven minutes later.
By time Roman reached Vivian's house, Elena was gripping kitchen counter.
He moved toward her.
Stopped.
“Can I touch you?”
Elena looked at him through pain.
“Yes.”
May you like
He took her hand.
For first time since bedroom, she held on.
