Chapter 9 - They Kidnapped Gabriel Again to Force Roman Back Into the Mafia—But His Son Refused to Become the Reason His Father Returned to ViolenceThe kidnappers wanted something stranger than money.

They wanted Roman.

Not his cash.

Not his companies.

His name.

Sebastian Marino had spent final years watching Roman dismantle organization Vittorio built.

To Sebastian, this was betrayal.

Family weakness.

An insult to blood.

At 6:00 a.m., video arrived.

Gabriel sat inside unknown room.

Hands free.

No visible injuries.

A man stood behind camera.

Gabriel looked directly lens.

“I'm okay.”

Then eyes shifted slightly.

Roman recognized.

Gabriel was thinking.

Not panicking.

Video cut.

Text followed.

REBUILD WHAT YOU DESTROYED.

Then list.

Three former Marino captains.

Two shipping contracts.

One offshore account.

Sebastian wanted Roman to publicly restore them.

Why?

Federal exposure.

If Roman reactivated network, he violated probation and destroyed credibility.

More importantly, Gabriel would learn father chose criminal power for him.

Exactly cycle Roman had tried break.

Elena read.

“They're trying to make you prove their worldview.”

“Yes.”

“If you refuse?”

Roman didn't answer.

She touched arm.

“Roman.”

“They'll hurt him.”

“Maybe.”

He stared.

“You expect me to gamble with my son?”

“No.”

She held gaze.

“I expect you not to confuse immediate obedience with saving him.”

Hard.

True.

Federal hostage team traced video metadata.

Minimal.

Rebecca was inconsolable.

Thomas blamed himself.

Celeste arrived.

Vivian prayed.

Isabella helped investigators decode old family holdings.

Marcus worked quietly.

Then Matteo toddled into room holding toy dinosaur.

“Daddy sad?”

Roman crouched.

“Yes.”

“Gabe come?”

Roman's throat tightened.

“We're bringing him home.”

Matteo hugged him.

Roman closed eyes.

Not promise of outcome.

Commitment.

At noon second message.

One captain had to receive call from Roman.

Roman would say:

Marino business resumes under my authority.

Agents wanted him to comply for time.

Roman agreed.

Call recorded.

Former captain answered.

“Boss.”

Roman hated word.

“Listen carefully.”

Federal agent gestured.

Stick script.

Roman said line.

Captain paused.

Then:

“I knew you'd come back.”

Roman closed eyes.

“No.”

Agent tensed.

Roman continued:

“You're hearing what someone forced me to say because they kidnapped my son. Federal agents are recording.”

Chaos.

Agent cursed.

Elena stared.

Captain disconnected.

Roman expected anger.

Instead hostage commander said:

“You may have just accelerated timeline.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because Sebastian wants me criminal again more than money. If I perform, he wins even if Gabriel survives.”

Commander stared.

“That wasn't your call.”

“No.”

Roman looked toward Elena.

“Then arrest me.”

Silence.

Old Roman would never say that.

Commander exhaled.

“Sit down.”

Hours.

No message.

Roman nearly broke.

At 5:40 p.m., Gabriel escaped.

Not fully.

He got outside building.

Found gas station.

Called 911.

Kidnappers caught him before police arrived.

But call lasted eleven seconds.

Enough.

Cell tower.

Northern New Jersey.

Agents narrowed.

Abandoned private school property owned through Sebastian shell company.

Roman was forbidden to join raid.

He hated.

He stayed.

Elena stayed with him.

Forty-three minutes later commander called.

“Gabriel recovered.”

Roman collapsed into chair.

Alive.

Minor injuries.

One broken finger.

Dehydration.

Terrified.

Alive.

Sebastian wasn't there.

Three kidnappers arrested.

Gabriel arrived hospital.

Roman stopped outside room.

Rebecca already inside.

Thomas.

Celeste.

Too many parents.

Roman waited.

Gabriel saw through glass.

“Roman.”

Rebecca looked.

Gabriel said:

“Let him in.”

Roman entered.

“Can I hug you?”

Gabriel nodded.

Roman hugged.

Careful.

Gabriel whispered:

“You didn't do it.”

“What?”

“Rebuild.”

“No.”

“They said you'd do anything.”

“I almost did.”

“But you didn't.”

Roman pulled back.

“I was terrified.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“Good.”

Roman blinked.

“If you weren't scared, you'd be psychopath.”

Roman laughed through tears.

“Therapy is making you annoying.”

“Runs in family.”

Gabriel's expression changed.

“Sebastian called.”

“When?”

“Before I escaped.”

“What did he say?”

“That you were weak because Elena changed you.”

Roman looked toward Elena through glass.

Gabriel continued.

“I told him he was stupid.”

“Why?”

“Because she didn't make you weak.”

Boy swallowed.

“She made it harder for people to control you.”

Roman nearly broke.

Gabriel was right.

Old Roman could be manipulated through pride.

Insult.

Legacy.

Power.

New Roman cared less what men thought.

That made him dangerous differently.

Sebastian was arrested six days later in Nassau.

Isabella identified financial contact.

Federal agents coordinated.

No shootout.

No revenge.

Just old man in linen shirt escorted from marina in handcuffs.

Roman watched news.

Felt nothing.

Then turned television off and made Matteo breakfast.

Weeks later, Gabriel asked to spend summer near Roman and Elena.

Not live permanently.

Just summer.

Rebecca cried privately.

Roman reassured.

“You're his mother.”

“So is Celeste.”

“Yes.”

“And you're father.”

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

“Complicated.”

“Very.”

Gabriel arrived with two suitcases.

Roman put him in guest room.

Not inherited bedroom.

Not “heir suite.”

Just room.

First week awkward.

Second better.

Third, Gabriel and Matteo destroyed kitchen attempting pancakes.

Roman entered.

Flour everywhere.

“What happened?”

Gabriel pointed at toddler.

“He did it.”

Matteo yelled:

“Gabe did!”

Roman looked.

“Both criminals.”

Elena entered.

Stopped.

Then laughed.

Roman stared at her.

Ordinary laughter.

Again.

The thing he once nearly lost.

That night, after boys slept, Elena sat porch.

Roman joined.

“Dinner Friday?” he asked.

“We already live in same house temporarily.”

“Still asking.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

Then she said:

“Roman.”

“Yes?”

“I filed divorce petition.”

He stopped breathing.

Not separation.

Divorce.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

Pain moved across face.

She watched.

He didn't hide.

“Okay.”

“You're not going to fight?”

“No.”

“Even now?”

“What does now change?”

“We've been dating.”

“Yes.”

“You love me.”

“Yes.”

“You think we're rebuilding.”

“Yes.”

“Then why agree?”

Roman looked at her.

“Because rebuilding relationship isn't same as keeping legal contract you no longer consent to.”

Elena's eyes filled.

He continued.

“If we become something again, I don't want it because old marriage stayed alive on paper.”

Tears fell.

Roman wanted touch.

Didn't.

Elena reached first.

Took hand.

“Thank you.”

It was strangest moment of their relationship.

His wife told him she was divorcing him.

And Roman understood it might be most hopeful thing she had done.

Because Elena wasn't leaving this time in rain.

She wasn't escaping.

She was clearing ground.

May you like

Whatever came next would have to be chosen.

By both.
