Chapter 1

He seemed carved from marble and menace, possessing a lethal stillness that terrified everyone in the city, from corrupt politicians to rival street bosses. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that subtly concealed the shoulder holster he never removed. His dark eyes, usually cold and calculating, remained fixed on the ring, while his expression revealed nothing. “I cannot do this, Domenico,” Elena said. Her voice remained steady despite the absolute terror vibrating through her chest. She forced herself to stand tall and crossed her arms over her chest as a makeshift shield. Elena was not a typical mafia woman. She was not a fragile, waif-like socialite or a former runway model covered in designer labels. She was a woman of substantial curves and soft, thick flesh, built like the working-class Italian women of her ancestry. She wore practical clothes, kept her dark hair pulled into a severe bun, and relied on her mind as her sharpest weapon. For five years, she had served as chief forensic accountant for the Ricci family. She was the genius who washed their blood money through legitimate real estate developments across the Midwest, navigating offshore accounts and shell corporations with surgical precision. She was essential. But she had never believed she was desired.

Domenico slowly leaned back in his chair. The leather creaked. He did not reach for the ring. Instead, his gaze moved from the desk and locked onto Elena’s eyes. “You are returning my ring.”

“It is not a proposal, Domenico. It is a tactical maneuver,” Elena replied, refusing to look away. “I know what is happening on the streets. Desmond Ashford is making his move.”

The name hung in the air like a curse. Desmond Ashford was a ruthless British ex-mercenary who had recently seized control of the fractured Irish mob factions operating out of Canaryville and the northern docks. Ashford did not respect the old syndicate rules. He operated with military precision and absolute brutality, and for the previous three months, he had been dismantling Domenico’s supply lines piece by piece.

“You think I am marrying you because of a British street thug?” Domenico asked, his tone dangerously soft.

“I think you are marrying me because of the money,” Elena corrected him. “Ashford is not just hitting your shipments. He is hunting your financial infrastructure. I am the only person alive who knows where every single dollar of the Ricci empire is buried. If federal agents bring me in, or if Ashford captures me, your entire organization collapses.” She held his gaze. “You want to marry me to invoke spousal privilege so I can never be forced to testify against you. You want to make me a mafia wife so your soldiers are obligated to guard me twenty-four hours a day. You are placing a target on my back to draw Ashford out, using me as bait.”

Elena took a deep breath, her chest rising and falling as she fought to maintain her composure. For the previous two months, she had endured Domenico’s sudden, intense courtship. He had taken her to private dinners, bought her expensive gifts, and looked at her with a heavy, consuming hunger that she had desperately wanted to believe was real. But Elena was a woman of logic. Billionaire crime bosses did not fall in love with their plus-sized, pragmatic accountants. It was a transaction.

“I have given you five years of flawless loyalty, Domenico,” she continued, her voice cracking slightly. “I have kept you out of federal prison. But I will not surrender my entire life to become a pawn in a mob war. I am leaving Chicago tonight. My resignation is on the server.”

Domenico remained silent for a long time. The tension in the room became suffocating. Slowly, he placed his large, scarred hands on the desk. He had killed men for simply interrupting him. Yet as Elena openly defied him, he did not reach for his weapon. “You think you can just walk away, Elena?” he asked softly.

“I am walking away right now.” She turned her back on the most dangerous man in Illinois and headed toward the heavy oak doors. Every step felt like walking through quicksand. She expected the metallic click of a gun being cocked or the heavy footsteps of Domenico’s enforcers moving to block her path. Neither came. The room remained completely silent. Elena reached the door, took hold of the brass handle, and stepped into the hallway. Only then did Domenico Ricci move. He reached across the desk and picked up the ring. Holding the diamond beneath the dim light of his desk lamp, he examined its custom-forged band. A dark, predatory smile slowly touched the corners of his mouth. Elena thought she had uncovered his grand strategy. She had no idea how deeply she had underestimated the man she just abandoned.
