Chapter 3

“Thank you, Lauren. Have my driver take you back,” Domenico instructed, his tone polite yet dismissive.
Once the doctor left, the room fell into an intimate, heavy silence. Elena sat propped up against silk pillows on the massive king-size bed, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater that belonged to Domenico. The scent of sandalwood and rain clung to the fabric, wrapping around her like a protective shield. She watched as Domenico walked slowly to the bedside, holding a small silver tray carrying a cup of hot chamomile tea and a single, flawless diamond ring.
He didn't sit immediately. He stood looking down at her, his broad shoulders slightly bowed—not in defeat, but with the heavy realization of a man who had nearly lost the only person on earth who truly mattered to him.
“You absolute fool,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking as tears finally spilled over her lashes. “You used yourself as a tactical checkpoint? You let Ashford grab me just to draw him out into the open?”
“No,” Domenico corrected her quietly, setting the tray down and sitting on the edge of the mattress. He reached out, gently wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. “Ashford was already moving against us. I knew he would try to target you the moment he heard rumors of our separation. That’s why I let you return the ring in my office... so Ashford’s informants inside my building would report that you were vulnerable and unprotected.”
Elena stared at him, her breath hitching. “You... you staged the breakup? You knew they were watching?”
“I knew every camera, every wire, and every rat in that building,” Domenico admitted, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made her pulse race. “I knew you thought I was only marrying you for your mind, for your accounting, for the security of our empire. But you were wrong, Elena. So terribly wrong.”
He picked up the diamond ring from the silver tray, holding it between his fingers.
“I fell in love with you five years ago,” Domenico confessed, the words rough and raw, stripped of all syndicate armor. “I watched you walk into my office with your hair in a severe bun, wearing sensible clothes, absolutely terrifying my most senior capos by correcting their embezzlement sheets with a red pen. You were brilliant, you were fierce, and you were the most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. I waited five years for you to notice me as a man, not just a boss. When I finally proposed, I didn't care about spousal privilege or tax loopholes. I proposed because I couldn't imagine spending another day of my life breathing air you weren't sharing.”
Elena’s chest heaved. All her walls, all her logical defense mechanisms, and all her insecurities melted away under the crushing weight of his devotion. She was a plus-sized, pragmatic accountant from the South Side, yet the most feared king in Chicago was looking at her like she was the entire universe.
“And Desmond Ashford?” she whispered.
“Ashford’s men are currently being processed by federal authorities on charges I handed directly to the FBI two hours ago,” Domenico replied smoothly. “His entire operation in Chicago has ceased to exist. As for Ashford himself... he’s on a very slow freighter heading across the Atlantic, with strict instructions never to look at American soil again.”
Domenico slid the diamond ring back onto her finger, his warm skin brushing against hers.
“Now,” he murmured, leaning closer until his lips brushed the curve of her cheek, “will you do me the absolute honor of actually keeping this ring, marrying me for real, and ruling the Midwest by my side?”
Elena let out a watery, triumphant laugh, wrapping her arms around his thick neck and pulling him down into a deep, fierce, unyielding kiss that tasted of absolute victory and a brand-new beginning.
Fast forward three years. The violent syndicate wars of Chicago were long forgotten, replaced by a golden era of legitimate real estate development, community rebuilding, and corporate philanthropy. The Ricci Foundation, jointly managed by Domenico and Elena, had transformed the South Side, funding schools, hospitals, and parks for working-class families.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sprawling gardens of the Ricci lakefront estate were filled with laughter, string music, and hundreds of celebrating guests. It was their actual wedding day—not a tactical maneuver, not a syndicate arrangement, but a celebration of genuine, unbreakable love.

Elena stood before the floral altar wearing a breathtaking, custom-designed ivory lace gown that hugged her voluptuous curves to absolute perfection, her dark hair cascading in soft, elegant waves down her back. Standing across from her was Domenico, his dark eyes shining with undisguised adoration as the magistrate pronounced them husband and wife.
As the cheering guests broke into applause, Domenico pulled Elena into his arms, kissing her tenderly beneath the warm Chicago sun while the glittering skyline watched over them like a silent witness. She had started out thinking she was just a pawn in a mob war, but she had ended up conquering the heart of the king.
