Chapter 1 - The Public Slap, the Stained White Gown, and the Stolen MasterpieceThe crystal chandeliers of the Manhattan ballroom glittered above us, casting a blinding, merciless light over the silent crowd of nearly two hundred elite guests. Champagne glasses froze halfway to people’s mouths; the live orchestra had cut off mid-note; and the air grew so thick with tension you could hear the rain lashing against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows outside.

Just seconds earlier, my husband, Dominic Caruso—heir to the powerful Caruso fashion and real estate dynasty—had struck my face with such force that my lip split and copper blood tasted sharp on my tongue. I stood there, reeling from the sudden blow, while his mistress, Vanessa Moretti, clung to his arm like a triumphant trophy, her white evening gown dramatically smeared with red wine.

Vanessa had deliberately tipped her glass over her own dress, stumbled backward, and shrieked that I had attacked her. Dominic, turning at the exact split second calculated to make him look like the protective hero, hadn't asked a single question. He hadn't noticed my torn earring or my bleeding lip. He had simply looked at me with cold, unforgiving disgust and accused me of humiliating Vanessa in front of high society.

"Do you remember what day it is, Dominic?" I whispered, my voice trembling as I touched my burning cheek.

His hesitation lasted three agonizing seconds. Three seconds that shattered five years of marriage.

Today was our fifth wedding anniversary. Five years ago, inside a small, quiet Connecticut church, Dominic had promised that no matter how powerful or ruthless the Caruso family empire became, he would always trust me before anyone else. Tonight, it had taken him less than three seconds to break that sacred vow.

Instead of asking for my side, Dominic coldly told me I had ruined the evening.

Something inside my chest snapped—not with a bang, but with the icy, final silence of a winter lake freezing over. With shaking fingers, I unclipped the diamond earring that had been partially torn through my earlobe by the impact of his ring, placed the bloodstained jewel directly into Dominic’s palm, and closed his fingers over it.

"You chose your answer," I whispered, looking straight into his cold eyes. "Now live inside it."

I turned my back on him, ignoring the hotel manager rushing over to guide me through a private corridor to avoid the press. "No," I said, lifting my chin high. "Let them see me."

As I walked across the length of the grand ballroom, hundreds of pairs of eyes tracked my every step. But my gaze wasn't on them. My eyes were fixed on the illuminated runway at the front of the hall.

That was when I saw it.

An ivory wedding gown stood proudly beneath the spotlight, shimmering with delicate hand-stitched beadwork. Narrow back. Folded shoulder. A sweeping, asymmetric seam running gracefully from collarbone to waist.

I stopped dead in my tracks.

I knew every single line of that dress. Because I had drawn them.

Four years earlier, when I still held quiet dreams of returning to professional fashion design, I had stayed up late at our kitchen table sketching designs, pouring my soul onto paper. One evening, Dominic had walked into our study, picked up that exact sketch, and stared at it with awe. "This is beautiful, Nora," he had told me. When I timidly asked if there was a place for me at Caruso Design, he had smiled, kissed my forehead, and promised he would look into it.

He never mentioned it again.

Now, standing under the bright lights of the Caruso Design Group’s winter bridal gala, my original sketch was being presented to the fashion world.

Under his name.

In that single, crushing moment, Vanessa holding my husband’s arm was no longer the greatest betrayal in that room. Dominic hadn't just stolen five years of my youth, my devotion, and my silence. He had stolen my mind, my talent, and the independent future that was rightfully mine.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I turned around and walked out of the ballroom into the rainy Manhattan night, knowing that when I returned, I wouldn't be the obedient wife waiting quietly at home. I was going to take back everything he and his family had stolen from me.
