Chapter 4 - The Betrayal of the Mistress and the Crumbling EmpireBy late afternoon, the crisis at Caruso Design Group had escalated from a corporate hiccup into a full-scale systemic collapse.

News outlets across New York were running breaking banner headlines: Caruso Design Group Facing Federal Fraud Probe; Creator Nora Sterling Unveils Original Design Proofs. Social media was flooded with memes, fashion critics turning against Dominic for plagiacizing his own wife, and #JusticeForNora trending as the number one topic nationwide.
Inside the corporate suite, the rats were officially deserting the sinking ship.
When I walked down to the third-floor design studio accompanied by Elena, I found Vanessa Moretti frantically packing her designer handbag, trying to sneak out through the back service elevator. She looked disheveled, her expensive makeup smeared, her haughty billionaire-mistress facade completely dissolved into desperate panic.
"Going somewhere, Vanessa?" I called out calmly, leaning against the doorframe.
Vanessa froze, slowly turning around. Her eyes flashed with bitter venom. "You... you ruined everything, you pathetic little housewife! Dominic is ruined, and you think you’ve won? He never loved you! He told me you were just a boring domestic distraction while he built his real life!"
I walked slowly toward her, stopping just inches away. I didn't raise my voice; I didn't need to.
"Did he tell you that while he was living in my townhouse, wearing suits I ironed, eating meals I cooked, and stealing designs from my personal notebook?" I asked quietly. "And tell me, Vanessa—now that his corporate accounts are frozen by federal marshals, his stock is worthless, and his board of directors is voting to oust him for criminal fraud... how long do you think he’ll keep paying for your luxury apartment?"
Vanessa’s face went chalk white. The realization hit her like a physical blow. She wasn't just a pampered mistress; she was an expensive liability to a man who had just lost everything. Without a word, she shoved past me, dropped her head, and bolted down the hallway, fleeing the building forever.
Just then, heavy footsteps echoed behind me.
I turned around. Dominic stood at the entrance of the studio.
He looked ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. His tailored Italian suit was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and his arrogant, predatory confidence had been replaced by a hollow, desperate shell of a man.
"Nora..." Dominic whispered, his voice cracking as he took a hesitant step forward. "Please... I’m begging you. Call off your lawyers. Drop the federal injunction. The board is threatening to strip me of my CEO title and vote me out of the family trust entirely. If you do this, I’ll lose everything. My father will disown me."
I looked at the man who had vowed to protect me, the man who had casually humiliated me and stolen my life's work without a second thought.
"Your father built this company on hard work and integrity, Dominic," I said softly. "You built yours on lies, plagiarism, and cruelty. You didn't lose everything because of me. You lost everything because of who you are."
"Nora, we have a son!" he cried out, desperation clawing at his throat. "Think of Eli! Don't destroy our family!"
"I am thinking of Eli," I replied, my gaze hardening like steel. "I’m teaching him that no one—not even his father—has the right to abuse, silence, or steal from someone who loves them."

Dominic slumped against the wall, sliding down until he hit the cold floor, burying his face in his hands as silent, bitter tears of defeat finally broke through his armor.
I turned my back on him for the final time, walking out of the studio toward the elevators, ready to claim the bright, independent future that was rightfully mine.
