Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Corporate Execution And Vanessa's Public HumiliationBy 8:00 AM, the morning sun was casting a golden glow across the Manhattan skyline, but inside the executive boardroom of Vance Developments, the atmosphere resembled a morgue.

Daniel sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking hollowed out, unshaven, and utterly defeated. He had spent the last four hours at the precinct before posting bail through a frantic, desperate call to his estranged parents, who had immediately disowned him upon hearing the details of the scandal. Now, he sat staring at the glass doors as a dozen senior investors and board members filed into the room, their faces carved from stone.
And sitting right in the center of the opposing side of the table, flanked by high-powered corporate lawyers, was my brother Nicholas.
"What is the meaning of this?" one of the senior board members demanded, slamming his briefcase onto the table. "Daniel, we received emergency notices at 7:00 AM stating that Bennett Holdings is liquidating its entire credit line with us immediately! Are we facing bankruptcy?"
Daniel opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His throat felt like sandpaper.
Nicholas leaned back in his leather chair, steeple-fingered his hands, and offered a cool, devastating smile. "Not just bankruptcy, gentlemen. Liquidation, asset seizure, and forensic audits into corporate embezzlement. It turns out Mr. Vance here has been funneling company accounts into personal slush funds to finance lavish gifts for his mistress—who happens to be an employee in his own marketing department."
Murmurs of shock erupted around the table. Several board members stood up instantly, glaring at Daniel with undisguised hatred.
"That's a lie!" Daniel finally choked out, his voice cracking horribly. "Nicholas, you can't do this! You're destroying my life over a domestic dispute!"
"It's not a domestic dispute, Daniel. It's business," Nicholas replied smoothly, sliding a thick dossier across the polished wood toward the lead investor. "Here are the wire transfer records proving that over the past eleven months, company funds were diverted to luxury boutiques, jewelry stores, and high-end apartments for Vanessa Miller. Feel free to hand these over to the district attorney on your way out."
At that exact moment, the boardroom doors swung open again. Vanessa stood there, her makeup smudged, looking frantic and desperate. She had rushed straight from her apartment after realizing Daniel's credit cards had all been frozen.
"Daniel! Thank God," she cried, rushing toward him. "My landlord just locked me out! My cards are all declined! What is going on?"
Daniel looked up at her with hollow, resentful eyes. The illusion of their grand affair had shattered against the cold rocks of reality. There was no glamour left—only ruin, debt, and mutual contempt.
"Get out," Daniel muttered hoarsely.
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks. "What?"
"I said, get out!" Daniel roared, finally snapping under the crushing weight of his failure. "This is all your fault! If you hadn't pushed her in that hospital hallway, none of this would have happened!"
Vanessa's jaw dropped. "My fault? You used me! You said you were going to leave her!"
"Silence!" Gabriel's voice boomed as he walked into the boardroom, holding a thick stack of legal documents. He stepped up beside Nicholas and looked down at both of them with supreme indifference.
"Vanessa Miller," Gabriel announced clearly, ensuring every board member and journalist waiting outside heard every word. "As of this morning, your employment at Vance Developments has been terminated with cause. Furthermore, my legal team has filed a civil lawsuit against you for intentional infliction of emotional distress, workplace harassment, and physical assault resulting in bodily harm to an expectant mother. Every penny of salary and bonus you received over the last eleven months funded by company assets will be clawed back through wage garnishment and property seizure."
Vanessa staggered backward, her knees buckling as reality crashed down upon her. She looked around the room for a single sympathetic face, but found only cold, unforgiving stares. The life of luxury she had stolen through deceit had vanished into thin air.
Back at St. Catherine's Hospital, high above the city noise, I sat propped up in my hospital bed, cradling a warm cup of herbal tea while gazing out the window at the morning sun. My brother Alexander sat quietly in the armchair beside my bed, gently peeling an orange for me.
"They're finished, sweetheart," Alexander said softly, handing me a segment of the fruit. "Daniel's company is gone, his assets are frozen, and Vanessa is facing civil suits that will keep her paying restitution for the next twenty years."
I took a deep breath, feeling the profound, weightless peace of a storm that had finally cleared. For seven years, I had tried to prove I didn't need my family, that I could build a normal, humble life on my own terms. But last night taught me that while I didn't need their protection to survive, having brothers who would tear down empires to shield their blood was the greatest gift in the world.

"Thank you, Alex," I whispered, resting my hand gently over my stomach where my daughter was resting peacefully.
"Always, Claire," Alexander replied, smiling warmly as he squeezed my hand. "Always."
