Chapter 2 - The Midnight Confession and the Trap Is Sprung

For three days after hearing Sloane’s heinous plan, I couldn't sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Julian’s genuine, radiant smile whenever he spoke about his unborn child, followed immediately by the image of his yacht exploding into a fiery nightmare in the middle of the ocean.
I knew the rules of the underworld. Snitches didn't survive in New York. If I spoke up, Sloane and her corrupt security accomplice, Marcus, would eliminate me before I could even finish my sentence. But if I stayed silent, an innocent man—a man who had shown me unearned kindness when the rest of the world ignored me—was going to be murdered in cold blood.
I made my decision. I couldn't live with the blood on my hands.
It was a rainy Thursday midnight when Aster Row finally closed its doors. The staff had gone home, leaving only the night crew cleaning up. Julian was upstairs in his private office suite on the penthouse floor of the building, reviewing quarter-end shipping manifests.
I bypassed the security desk, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Marcus, the towering, scar-faced head of security whom Sloane had paid off, was standing guard outside Julian’s thick oak doors. His cold eyes tracked me as I approached holding a tray with a fresh pot of dark black coffee—Julian’s late-night preference.
"What do you want, girl?" Marcus grunted, stepping into my path, his hand resting casually near his concealed holster.
"Mr. Mercer requested fresh coffee before he reviews the midnight logistics report," I lied smoothly, keeping my voice as steady as my terrified body would allow.
Marcus stared at me for three agonizing seconds, searching my face for any sign of deception. Finally, he sneered and grunted, "Quick in and out. He's in a dark mood tonight."
He opened the heavy door and shoved me inside.
The room was vast, lined with floor-to-ceiling leather-bound books and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the rain-slicked skyline of Manhattan. Julian sat behind a massive mahogany desk, his jacket off, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He looked exhausted, rubbing his temples in the dim golden light of a single desk lamp.
"I didn't order coffee, Tess," he said softly without looking up, his deep voice rich and gravelly.
"I know, Mr. Mercer," I said, locking the heavy brass bolt on the door behind me.
Julian lifted his head, his sharp gray eyes narrowing instantly. The atmosphere in the room shifted from quiet fatigue to deadly tension. A man in his position survived for forty-one years by sensing danger instantly.
"What are you doing, Tess?" he asked, his tone dropping an octave, cold and dangerous. "You know the rules about locking doors around me."
"I am risking my life being in this room right now," I said, my voice trembling, though I stood my ground. "And if you don't listen to me with an open mind, you will be dead in less than two weeks."
Julian slowly leaned back in his leather chair. He didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't call for help. He simply watched me with a terrifying, piercing gaze. "Explain yourself. Fast."
"Sloane isn't pregnant," I blurted out, tears of fear welling in my eyes. "She has never been pregnant. She is wearing a medical-grade silicone belly with Velcro straps. She paid Dr. Keene five hundred thousand dollars to forge every single ultrasound, blood test, and medical record."
The silence in the office was deafening. The air became so thick it felt impossible to breathe.
Julian’s face turned into a mask of pure, murderous rage. The veins on his forearms bulged as his hands clenched into tight fists. The grief and hope he had carried for six months shattered into a million jagged pieces right in front of me.
"You dare bring your jealous fantasies into my office?" Julian growled, standing up slowly. He towered over the desk, looking like a demonic predator ready to tear me apart. "Sloane is my wife-to-be. She is carrying my son. If this is some sick game to get money from me, Tess, I swear to God you won't leave this building alive."
"I don't want your money!" I screamed, stepping forward, shedding all fear. "She called you a grieving fool! She laughed about how easy you were to manipulate because you desperately wanted a child after Elise died!"
At the mention of Elise, Julian froze. A dangerous spark flickered in his eyes.
"She's not just faking it, Julian!" I sobbed, stepping right up to his desk. "She paid off Marcus! Your head of security! They are going to sabotage your yacht's fuel lines during your trip to the Bahamas after the wedding. They're going to blow up your boat, murder you at sea, inherit your two billion dollars, and then claim she suffered a tragic miscarriage from the grief!"
Julian stared at me. The absolute sincerity and terror in my eyes struck him like a physical blow. He was a master at detecting lies; he had spent a lifetime reading deception in the eyes of mobsters, politicians, and assassins.
In my eyes, he found only pure, unadulterated truth.
Slowly, Julian reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a small, encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a private number.
"Hale," Julian spoke coldly into the receiver. "Bring a tactical team to Dr. Keene's fertility clinic in Midtown right now. Break down the doors, secure his private hard drives, and bring Keene to my warehouse docks within the hour. If he resists, break his kneecaps."
Julian hung up the phone. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of heart-wrenching sorrow and cold, calculated vengeance.
"If you are lying to me, Tess," Julian whispered softly, "I will destroy everything you have ever loved."
"And if I'm telling the truth?" I asked, wiping a tear from my cheek.
"Then I am going to make them burn."
An hour later, Julian’s secret chief enforcer, Hale—a silent, terrifying man who handled tasks outside the normal security hierarchy—sent a video file directly to Julian’s phone. Julian clicked play and set the phone on the desk between us.
The video showed Dr. Keene strapped to a chair in an abandoned warehouse, blood dripping from his nose, weeping hysterically as Hale stood over him with a pair of steel pliers.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Dr. Keene shrieked in the video. "Sloane paid me half a million dollars! The ultrasounds are stock video files from an offshore medical database! She was never pregnant! Please don't kill me! The bank transfer receipts are in my safe!"
Julian closed his eyes for three long seconds. When he opened them, the man who believed he was going to be a father was gone. In his place stood the merciless King of Manhattan.
He looked at me, his gaze softer now, filled with deep respect and boundless gratitude. "You saved my life, Tess. You risked everything to come to me."

"What are you going to do?" I asked, shivering.
Julian reached across the desk, taking my shaking hands into his large, warm palms. "Sloane wants a grand wedding, Tess. She wants a dramatic performance." A terrifying, brilliant smile played at the corner of his lips. "So I am going to give her the greatest show of her life."
