Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Vengeance and the Guarded Heart

In the three months that followed the catastrophic non-wedding at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City burned with news of the scandal. Front-page headlines dominated every newspaper: THE MOB KING'S FAKE HEIR, BLOODLINE OF LIES, and SLOANE WHITAKER FACES LIFE IN PRISON.

Sloane and Marcus were held without bail in a high-security federal detention center, awaiting a trial that promised to lock them away forever. But while the public devoured the drama, Julian Mercer retreated into complete isolation.

He dismantled the nursery in his penthouse, throwing away every piece of furniture, every baby garment, every toy he had lovingly built with his own hands. The grief of losing his wife had been reopened, compounded by the horrific humiliation of being played for a fool.

Except he didn't forget about me.

Immediately after the wedding, Julian ensured my absolute safety. Recognizing that Sloane’s criminal allies or Marcus’s underworld contacts might seek revenge on the whistleblower, Julian assigned a team of two elite, discreet bodyguards to protect me twenty-four hours a day.

He moved me out of my cramped, dangerous apartment into a luxurious, highly secure high-rise apartment in Upper East Side Manhattan—paying the rent in full for three years. Furthermore, he quietly paid off my entire nursing school tuition and established a million-dollar trust fund in my name.

"I don't need your money, Mr. Mercer," I had argued vehemently when his lawyer presented me with the documents. "I didn't tell you the truth for a reward."

"I know you didn't, Tess," Julian had answered quietly over the phone. "That's precisely why you deserve it. You are the only person in this city who risked everything for me without asking for a single thing in return."

For weeks, our communication was limited to brief text messages checking on my safety. But as autumn turned into a freezing Manhattan winter, I found myself thinking about him constantly. I worried about his solitary pain, his heavy heart, and the dark silence he had wrapped around himself.

On a bitterly cold Tuesday evening in December, a sleek black town car pulled up outside my university building as my late-night nursing lecture finished. The rear window rolled down, revealing Julian.

He looked different. He had lost weight, and subtle threads of silver were visible at his temples. But his eyes were clear, free from the heavy fog of grief that had blinded him for months.

"Get in, Tess," he said softly, offering a warm smile. "Let me buy you dinner. Not at Aster Row. Somewhere quiet."

We drove to an intimate, low-lit Italian trattoria tucked away in Greenwich Village—a place where nobody recognized the King of Manhattan. We sat in a back booth, sharing a bottle of vintage red wine and pasta.

"How are you holding up?" I asked softly, studying his features.

"I am healing," Julian confessed, swirling his wine glass gently. "For six years, I was running away from Elise's death. I was so desperate to fill the empty void in my life that I allowed a serpent into my home. When Sloane lied about that child, she offered me a illusion of peace. I was a foolish man, Tess."

"You weren't foolish," I countered gently, reaching across the table to lay my hand over his. "You were a loving man who wanted a family. That is not a flaw, Julian. That is the best part of you."

Julian looked down at my hand over his. His fingers twitched, and then he turned his hand over, intertwining his long fingers with mine. A tender warmth rushed through my veins, making my heart skip a frantic beat.

"You saved more than my life that night, Tess," Julian whispered, his gray eyes searching mine with intense vulnerability. "You saved my soul. You showed me that real loyalty and pure goodness still exist in this cruel world."

Over the next two months, our secret late-night dinners became a weekly routine. We talked about everything—my medical aspirations, his childhood growing up on the rough docks of Brooklyn, books, art, and life. The terrifying, cold mob boss disappeared when he was with me, replaced by a brilliant, protective, and deeply caring man who listened to every word I spoke as if it were gospel.

I was falling deeply, hopelessly in love with Julian Mercer. And I could feel him falling for me.

However, danger still lingered in the dark corners of the city.

One night in late January, as Julian was walking me back to my apartment building lobby under a heavy snowstorm, a dark SUV pulled up to the curb with its headlights turned off.

Before Julian’s bodyguards could react, a side door slid open. A masked gunman—a hitman hired by Marcus’s old criminal syndicate seeking to eliminate the key witness before the upcoming federal trial—aimed a silenced pistol directly at my chest!

"Tess, down!" Julian roared.

Without a second thought, Julian threw his massive body over mine, tackling me to the freezing, snow-covered pavement and covering my body entirely with his own frame.

POW! POW! POW!

Silenced shots shattered the glass lobby doors above us. Julian slammed his weight over me, shielding my head and torso from the hail of bullets.

Julian’s lead bodyguard, Hale, pulled his weapon and returned fire, unloading a magazine into the SUV's tires and driver-side window. The vehicle lurked sideways, tires screaming, and sped off wildly down the snow-covered street into the darkness.

"Tess! Are you hit? Are you okay?!" Julian yelled frantically, his hands desperately checking my arms, face, and legs for injuries. His voice was laced with an overwhelming, frantic panic I had never heard from him before.

"I'm okay! I'm fine!" I gasped, shaking violently from the adrenaline. "Julian, are you hurt?!"

Julian breathed a massive sigh of relief, cupping my face in his large, warm hands, ignoring the freezing cold surrounding us. "Thank God... Thank God you're safe."

He pulled me against his chest, clutching me so tightly I could feel the thunderous, desperate beat of his heart.

"I can't lose you, Tess," Julian whispered into my hair, his voice breaking with raw emotion. "I won't let anyone in this world hurt you. I love you."

May you like

I pulled back slightly, staring into his eyes amidst the swirling white snow. "I love you too, Julian."

He leaned down and pressed his lips against mine—a fierce, passionate, breathtaking kiss that ignited a fire inside me, melting away the terror of the attack and sealing our bond forever in the freezing New York night.
