Chapter 2 - The Medical Miracle, The Twin Secret, And The Lawyer’s Midnight Call

“Mrs. Moretti,” the doctor said, her voice dropping into a tone of clinical amazement as she pointed a stylus at the grey-scale monitor. “Look closely at the screen here.”
I forced my blurring eyes to focus on the pulsing white shapes flickering on the display. I saw one tiny heartbeat pulsating rapidly. But as the doctor adjusted the contrast, a second, smaller, distinct shadow emerged right beside the first one.
“You’re looking at twins,” the doctor announced softly.
I gasped, my hand flying up to cover my mouth. “Twins? Are you absolute sure?”
“I am entirely positive,” she smiled, handing me a freshly printed ultrasound snapshot showing two distinct, tiny gestational sacs. “But that isn't the only anomaly we found during your comprehensive blood work and genetic screening this morning, Lena.”
My stomach plummeted. “What else?”
“Your hormonal markers and early embryonic development indicate something extremely rare—something called superfetation, or more accurately in your specific medical profile, a delayed second conception resulting from a dichorionic-diamniotic twin presentation with separate fertilization windows.”
I stared at her blankly, feeling entirely overwhelmed. “Doctor, speak English. What does that mean for my babies?”
“It means,” the doctor said carefully, “that while one twin was conceived approximately six weeks ago during your normal cycle, the second twin was conceived nearly two weeks later—around the exact night of your anniversary.”
The room seemed to spin violently on its axis.
The anniversary night. The night I walked into Dante’s office and found him kissing Sofia. The night my entire world ended, and yet, hidden beneath the crushing grief and betrayal, a second life had miraculously taken root in the chaos.
They were twins. And they carried a biological timeline that would link Dante Moretti to my escape whether I wanted him to be or not—unless I made sure he never found out.
By week four of my secret hiding in a quiet, upscale suburb across the state line in Indiana, my corporate phone—which I had kept powered on strictly for legal monitoring purposes—began to ring incessantly.
The caller ID flashed a name I hadn't seen in a month: Marcus Vance, Moretti Holdings General Counsel.
I let it ring out to voicemail three times before finally swiping the answer button and holding the phone to my ear, keeping my breathing completely steady.
“Lena,” Marcus’s sharp, frantic voice burst through the speaker before I could speak. “Thank God. Where the hell are you? Dante has turned half of Chicago upside down looking for you. Private investigators are scouring every airport, hotel registry, and bank account from here to New York.”
“Tell your boss I am safe, Marcus,” I replied, my voice chillingly calm. “And tell him to stop wasting corporate resources chasing ghosts. Our marriage is over. The divorce papers will be served through your office by the end of the week.”
“Lena, wait!” Marcus shouted over the phone line. “You don't understand the situation! It’s not just a standard divorce anymore. Two days after you vanished, Dante discovered massive, unauthorized financial movements originating from Sofia Vale’s corporate accounts.”
I frowned, freezing mid-stride in my small kitchen. “What kind of financial movements?”
“Embezzlement,” Marcus hissed darkly. “Sofia didn't just casually kiss your husband on anniversary night. She had been secretly siphoning millions from Moretti Capital’s offshore logistics subsidiaries into a private Swiss shell corporation. She used the affair as a psychological distraction to keep Dante’s attention occupied while she executed a hostile buyout of his shipping assets!”
A cold, dark shiver ran down my spine. So Sofia hadn't just been a pathetic, opportunistic mistress trying to steal another woman's husband. She was a professional corporate saboteur who had orchestrated the entire seduction to bring down the Moretti empire from the inside out.
“And where is Sofia now?” I asked quietly.
“That’s the terrifying part, Lena,” Marcus whispered urgently. “She vanished the morning after you left. She cleaned out her office, hacked our mainframe, and disappeared with fifty million dollars in liquid capital. Dante is on a absolute rampage. The board of directors is panicking, federal investigators are swarming the corporate tower, and Dante’s ruthless reputation is taking a devastating hit in the financial press.”
Good. The man who had broken my heart, shattered our vows, and callously tossed aside five years of loyalty in a smoky office was finally reaping the catastrophic harvest of his own arrogance.
“That is none of my concern, Marcus,” I said firmly. “Process the divorce papers with a clean break of all corporate assets. I want nothing from his empire. Not a single cent.”
“Lena, hold on! You can't just walk away—!”
I terminated the call, powered the phone off, and removed the SIM card, dropping it into a glass of water.
I touched my flat, growing stomach gently, feeling the fierce, protective maternal instinct surge through my blood. I didn't need Dante Moretti’s dirty billionaire money. I didn't need his protection, his apologies, or his toxic world of corporate warfare. I had my babies, my freedom, and a brand-new life to build.
Or so I foolishly believed, until a sleek black Maybach rolled slowly down my quiet suburban street three weeks later, stopping directly in front of my rented cottage.
The rear passenger door swung open, and out stepped Dante Moretti.
He looked terrifying. His tailored bespoke suit was slightly rumpled, his dark hair was windswept, and his piercing eyes burned with the desperate, wild intensity of a man who had hunted down his prey to the ends of the earth.

He didn't knock on the front door. He marched straight up the wooden steps, bypassed the porch, and stood towering outside my window, his dark gaze locking directly onto mine through the sheer curtains.
The hunter had found his runaway wife. And he had no intention of letting her go without a war.
