Chapter 4 - The Corporate Raid, The Underworld Threat, And The Kidnapping At Dawn

Four weeks later, deep in my secluded Indiana sanctuary, the tranquil illusion of my safe haven violently shattered.
It was 4:30 AM. A thick, eerie morning fog rolled across the dense woods surrounding the property. I woke up abruptly to a strange, heavy silence—the kind of unnatural quiet where even the crickets and birds had stopped chirping.
I sat up in bed, my heart instantly pounding against my ribs.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
A soft, rhythmic rapping echoed against my bedroom window.
Panic seized my throat. I slipped quietly out of bed, pulling a heavy wool robe over my pajamas, and crept toward the hallway. Before I could reach the front door, the heavy oak paneling groaned, and the deadbolt latch clicked open with a chilling, metallic snap.
Someone had picked my lock.
Three towering men dressed in sleek, tactical black suits slipped silently into the cottage like wraiths. Their faces were obscured by dark balaclavas, and heavy firearms were strapped securely to their chests.
I screamed, turning to run toward the back kitchen window, but a massive, calloused hand clamped firmly over my mouth, cutting off the sound.
“Quiet, Mrs. Moretti,” a low, gruff voice rumbled near my ear. “We’re not here to hurt you. But you need to come with us right now, or your children won't survive the sunrise.”
The word children pierced my brain like a lightning bolt.
They know about the pregnancy.
The tactical operatives didn't wait for my consent. They hoisted me off my feet, wrapping a thick, dark woolen cloak around my shoulders, and carried me bodily out the front door into the dense morning fog.
Parked at the edge of the gravel driveway was a sleek, unmarked black armored SUV. The rear door swung open, and I was shoved unceremoniously into the plush leather interior.
As the vehicle accelerated smoothly into the winding country roads, a second figure sitting in the darkened corner of the back seat shifted.
The overhead reading light clicked on with a soft click.
I gasped. Sitting right beside me wasn't one of Sofia Vale’s cartel thugs, nor was it an unknown kidnapper.
It was Marcus Vance, Dante’s general counsel. And his face was bleeding from a deep laceration across his cheekbone.
“Marcus?!” I cried out, struggling against the seatbelt. “What is the meaning of this?! Are you insane?!”
“I’m sorry, Lena,” Marcus panted, holding a white handkerchief against his bleeding cheek. “I tried to warn you. I tried to keep the wolves at bay.”
“Warn me about what? Who took me?!”
“Not Sofia,” Marcus said grimly, looking out the tinted window as the SUV sped toward the city line. “It’s Viktor Petrov.”
My blood ran instantly cold. Even in the pristine, ivory towers of downtown Chicago finance, everyone whispered the name Viktor Petrov in terrified reverence. He was the undisputed patriarch of the Russian Bratva operating out of the eastern shipping docks—a ruthless, sociopathic criminal syndicate that had been locked in a bloody, underground turf war with Dante Moretti for over a decade.
“Petrov?” I whispered, terror gripping my lungs. “What does a Russian mobster have to do with me? I am just a designer! I have nothing to do with Dante’s syndicate wars!”
“You have everything to do with him, Lena,” Marcus explained rapidly, his eyes wide with panic. “Two days ago, Dante discovered that Petrov’s syndicate was quietly buying up controlling debt in Moretti Capital through front companies—the exact same financial sabotage Sofia Vale was running. Dante retaliated by freezing Petrov’s primary laundering accounts in the Cayman Islands, costing the Bratva over two hundred million dollars.”
“So why am I in this car?!” I screamed, clutching my stomach protectively.
“Because Petrov found out about the divorce filing. He found out you walked out on Dante,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Petrov knows that the only human weakness Dante Moretti possesses on this earth is you. He doesn't want Dante’s money anymore. He wants Dante’s bloodline. He wants to use you and your unborn baby as ultimate leverage to force Dante to sign over his entire shipping empire at gunpoint.”
The sheer, overwhelming horror of the situation crashed over me like an ocean wave.
My babies—the two fragile, innocent lives growing inside my womb—were being used as pawns in a brutal, bloody war between two monsters who claimed to own the city.
An hour later, the armored SUV pulled up to an abandoned, cavernous industrial steel warehouse situated right at the edge of the desolate Chicago shipping yards. The air smelled heavily of salt water, rotting wood, and industrial oil.
The operatives dragged me out of the vehicle, marching me across the concrete floor into the echoing, freezing interior of the warehouse.
Sitting tied securely to a wooden chair in the center of the room, surrounded by a dozen armed Russian thugs holding submachine guns, was a terrifying, silver-haired man with cold, dead eyes and a jagged scar running down his left cheek—Viktor Petrov.

And standing twenty yards away, facing down the Russian syndicate army all by himself with nothing more than his terrifying presence and a loaded automatic pistol in his hand, was Dante Moretti.
He had come for us.
