Chapter 3 - The Fractured EmpireBy the middle of the week, the pristine veneer of Roman Valente’s world was crumbling into dust.

In his penthouse office atop the Valente Tower, Roman stood behind his massive glass desk, staring at three flat-screen monitors displaying disastrous financial news. The stock prices for Valente Development had dropped by eighteen percent in forty-eight hours. Major European logistics partners were suddenly requesting immediate audits of their shipping contracts, and three key trade union leaders had mysteriously turned off their mobile phones, refusing to take his calls.

Standing near the leather sofa was Vicenzo, Roman’s long-time chief of security—a scarred, weather-beaten man whose loyalty had been bought decades ago.

"Where is she?" Roman snapped, his voice rough from anger and lack of sleep. "Where did Celeste go?"

"She vanished from her apartment two nights ago, Don Roman," Vicenzo replied nervously, adjusting his suit jacket. "Her phone is turned off. We checked her brother's house—Marcus Vance has federal agents stationed outside his residence around the clock. We can't get close without triggering a surveillance trap."

Roman slammed his heavy fist onto the glass desk, creating a faint hair-line crack in the corner. "She carries my blood! If Marcus Vance gets her into a grand jury room, she will testify about the offshore holding accounts I set up for her! I want her found, Vicenzo! I don't care if you have to tear Greybridge apart stone by stone!"

"And what about your wife, boss?" Vicenzo asked cautiously. "Helena has stayed locked inside the Marlo Estate since the anniversary party. Her sons have set up an airtight security perimeter. Gabriel hasn't filed any legal separation papers yet. It’s... unnaturally quiet."

Roman paused, his dark eyes narrowing. "Helena is a proud woman. She’s hiding her shame behind her father’s old walls. She knows that if she files for divorce, I will tie her up in legal battles for the next twenty years until she doesn't have a single penny left. She’s terrified."

"Are you sure about that, Roman?" a cold, calm voice suddenly echoed from the office doorway.

Roman spun around instantly, his hand dropping toward his concealed holster out of pure instinct.

Standing in the doorway was Gabriel Marlo, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit, holding a sleek black leather portfolio. Behind him stood two uniform officers from the Greybridge Sheriff's Department, holding a stack of official court-stamped documents.

"How did you get up here?" Roman demanded, stepping around his desk, his presence imposing and dangerous. "This is a private executive floor!"

"It was a private executive floor," Gabriel corrected smoothly as he stepped into the room. He motioned to the officers, who stepped forward and handed Vicenzo and Roman certified copies of an emergency judicial injunction. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the state supreme court issued an immediate freeze on all corporate assets connected to the Greybridge Port Terminal."

Roman’s face turned pale, the color draining completely from his skin. "You can't do that! The port belongs to Valente Development!"

"No, Roman, it doesn't," Gabriel replied, pulling an old, yellowed document from his portfolio and laying it on the desk. "This is the original 1998 land grant charter signed by my biological father, Arthur Marlo, and the city council. The charter specifically states that if the managing director of the port engages in acts of moral bankruptcy or financial fraud that compromise the safety of the municipality, the land rights instantly revert to the Marlo Family Trust."

"Moral bankruptcy?" Roman laughed bitterly, trying to regain his composure. "You think a slap at a party and an alleged affair constitutes legal 'moral bankruptcy'? Any judge I pay will throw this out in five minutes!"

"It isn't just about the affair, Roman," Gabriel said, leaning in close, his eyes reflecting pure, cold triumph. "It's about the three hundred million dollars in unregistered cartel cargo that passed through Pier 14 last Tuesday night—cargo that was documented on servers managed directly by Lucas's private intelligence team. My brother Noah just sent those encrypted shipping manifests to the Department of Justice ten minutes ago."

Roman stepped back as if he had been struck by a physical blow. His chest heaved as he realized the sheer scale of the trap that had been set around him.

"You... your mother planned this," Roman whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "She used that stupid girl's stunt at the party to draw my attention away while you prepared this strike!"

"My mother didn't plan your treason, Roman," Gabriel replied coldly. "She simply allowed you to execute yourself with your own arrogance. You thought she was just an elegant accessory for your public life. You forgot that before she was your wife, she was the woman who helped build the very foundation you built your fake kingdom upon."

Gabriel turned toward the door, stopping just before he exited.

"Oh, and Roman? Don't bother looking for Celeste Ardan," Gabriel added over his shoulder. "She is currently in an undisclosed location, enjoying a very comfortable afternoon tea... with my mother."
